Iran and nuclear weapons

This thread is for discussion of any of it, and all of it.

In addition, here's the latest news about it-

http://edition.cnn.com/2010/WORLD/meast/04/09/iran.nuclear/index.html

[hide]Iran announced Friday it has advanced its nuclear technology, unveiling new, faster centrifuges and celebrating "giant steps" forward.

In a speech celebrating National Nuclear Day, President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad slammed "selfish behavior" by "arrogant" countries that have tried to negotiate a halt to Iran's nuclear activity. As he spoke, a crowd chanted "God is great" and "Death to America."

"Today, Iranian scientists and experts have fully mastered the nuclear and have been taking giant steps and moving at full pace towards meeting all domestic needs and making proper use of home-grown potential in the field of nuclear energy," Ahmadinejad said.

Officials unveiled what they called a "third generation" of centrifuges six times faster than the ones currently being used.

Insisting Tehran's nuclear efforts are purely for energy purposes -- despite claims by many Western nations that Iran is pursuing nuclear weapons -- Ahmadinejad said he had been open to a deal, and blamed other countries for it falling apart.

Ahmadinejad also accused the United States of encouraging nuclear proliferation through its policies.

Referring to the signing of an arms deal between the United States and Russia this week -- including remarks by U.S. President Obama that the U.S. goal is a world without nuclear weapons -- Ahmadinejad called it "a show performed by the United States" and "a great lie."[/hide]

I also heard from a semi-reliable source that the White House declared Iran's development of nuclear weapons is a result of malicious intent, and a malicious approach. That's nothing new ofcourse, but I'm glad it gets recognition from the White House, even though they're kind of late with their statements. Couldn't find any sources in English for that (most probably because I didn't really invest time in trying to find sources.)

And guys, keep it clean.

I think that Israel will declare war on Iran, to be honest. I just hope that the United States doesn't help, especially since Israel isn't worthy enough for that.

I doubt that'll happen soon, unless Iran does something drastic.

BTW, what do you mean by not worthy?

Well, considering that we've waged an illegal war for a decade and already have financial problems due to the war, declaring war on Iran in order to help Israel is not worth the heartache. This isn't even to mention the fact that Israel forges fake passports in order to assassinate their enemies overseas. They're a bunch of crooked bastards (at least their government is).

I guess I have to agree on the first part.

As for the second, I think I know better. These things are not unique to Israel, I assure you USA, England, Germany, France, and frankly, almost any other first world country, doe the same things. Israel just got caught, and sophisticated policiticians can't afford not to frown upon it.

The media also had a bit of a celebration over it too...

I guess that it's unfair to demonize them over the passport issue, but it is definitely not worth a war due to the already-existing financial problems from Iraq/Afghanistan.

Then why "Israel isn't worthy enough for that."? Correct me if I'm wrong, but I read it as "USA can't afford it, and Israel doesn't deserve it anyway". Sorry if I really am wrong...

P.S.

I also think Iran's nuclear weapons are a global problem, not just an Israeli problem. I can still understand why USA wouldn't want to get involved in a war though.

Perhaps Iran is only going after a clean and abundant energy source?

My rear end. Knowing Ahmadinejad, he wants to use their nuclear capacity to create weapons. Maybe if we're lucky, Israel will attack Iran and they'll both be destroyed. I forget when but I was listening to the BBC about this, I believe it was about January, and Israel promised to bomb any faculties they knew about if Iranians did not stop in X amount of time.

Edit: By Israel and Iran being destroyed I mean their government, not the Jews and the Persians.

Seriously?

Both statements are extremely ignorant.

EDIT: I really wasn't expecting that from you.

EDIT2: After you edit... I don't get it? Why would a war destroy the governments? I doubt even riots in Iran would make Ahmadinijad lose his job. As for Israel, I'm not quite sure what would happen, the government could lose it's power and it could also not, depending on the people mostly.

I have read in a local newspaper that Iran is building new facilities inside mountains in order to protect them from bombs. I have also heard that Israel plans to launch a pre-emptive campaign against Iran if Iran doesn't stop its program by the end of this year.

As an Iranian who has relatives in Iran my judgement may be slightly biased but I believe we have a right to use al sources of energy available to us. Also I believe that no country that posses nuclear weapons has the right to oppose an additions to a countries defenses even though I hate war of all kinds and would give my left arm for the ellimination of all guns and bombs even for hunting.

p.s. I am also Mexican

I thought it was fitting.

Really ? Really ?

Surely you're not naive enough to believe, Iran, a country that has problems with running water, is developed enough to use nuclear power ?

I'd be careful with those kinds of generalizations and assumptions.

Rather, at least personally, I find the whole essence of the situation being that Iran is "doing everything themselves" in such a way that enriching uranium for weapons is possible. They've been offered cheaper alternatives from many different nations, which they would obviously choose if they were in it for the power. They have declined all these deals without examiniation, citing a "right to self-sufficient nuclear power". Why do they need that self-sufficiency, when a spectrum of nations guarantee a constant supply, from all areas of the political spectrum and the world? The only conclusion i can draw from that, personally, is that they do not want the uranium for peaceful needs.

Hoever, that is also immaterial. The Times discovered secret official iranian documents (that have been verified from reliable iranian scientists outside of iran) on the making of triggers for nuclear weapons. this technology only serves a single purpose: nuclear bombs.

Iran wants the bomb, that's a fact. All major political powers have incorporated this view into their foreign policy, another clear indicator of this notion. there are no "WMD issues" like with Iraq here. This time around, the documentation actually exists, at least for the triggers.

Pretty sure [cabbage]'s not gonna go down, now that Russia's agreed to muscle down on Iran along with the US. China and North Korea are just about Iran's only buddies, and China's got too much at stake to be waging war with pretty much the entire Western world, and [bleep] North Korea.

Although it will be interesting to see what actually does happen. It's not gonna be world war three, since everyone's against Ahm-face (I can't spell his name from memory). Hopefully it's not some kind of crazy [wagon] war. I can definitely see revolution, though.

catch it now so you can like it before it went so mainstream

Haven't really read all the posts but here's what I think. I don't want everyone and their brother to have nukes but I also don't think its really our right to say who can and can't, but since we do I'll say I don't think Iran should because Ahmedenijad is a crazy mofo. If you don't believe me please do some research. Also I did see some stuff about Israel, while I wish we wouldn't intervene (USA) I'm sure we would and the world would be a huge cluster-bleep. But hey lets live in the moment. I've really been trying to tone down on how much I argue with people online because nothing ever comes of it and it becomes a huge waste of time. So everyone enjoy yourselves and hope when you wake up tomorrow that the world isn't too much crappier than it is now.

I sort of realized that I'm no politician and that no matter how much I argue its not gonna really make a difference so I can still be interested in what happens but avoid the whole drama of endless argument.
