With the introduction of Living Rock Cavern Jagex brought mining closer again to the mining we used to know at the beginning: rocks with multiple ores.

These so called deposit rocks (gold and coal) are just like most trees (except normal trees): they have a random amount of ores in it before they are "empty".

It's also the only place where u can fish cave fish and rocktail (the most healing fish in runescape) or where u can fight against the living rocks.
To reach the cavern, there are 2 routes:

1. Run from Edgeville to the Dwarven Mines under Ice Mountain and climb down the ladder.

There run to the pickaxe shop and climb down the rope at the dungeon icon on your minimap.

livingrocks1.png

livingrocks2.png

if you have finished the 'Perils of Ice Mountain' quest, u can also use the ladder at the pickaxe factory for a short cut.

2. Run from Falador to the Dwarven Mines and from there to the pickaxe shop in the North-East of the mines.

Climb down the rope at the dungeon icon on your minimap.
Fishing: cave fish and rocktail can only be caught here

Mining: only place with depostit rocks

Melee: only place where u can fight the living rocks

IV. Fishing part
Just like all the fishspots these like to move around, the blue areas are where i usualy fished them.

LRC-fishingcopy.png
Cave fish:

lvl 85 fishing needed

lvl 88 cooking needed to cook, heals 200 LP + a +2 boost to a random cb skill (not summ).

there is no lvl at which they never burn

items needed: fishing rod + normal fishing bait.

Rocktail:

lvl 90 fishing needed

lvl 93 cooking needed to cook, heals 230 LP + can heal 100 over max LP

there is no lvl at which they never burn

items needed: fishing rod + living minerals (can be mined from living rock remains).
Allways wear highest defbonus gear against the attacks of the living rocks while fishing or changing from spot.

this is the setup i use:

rs133814.png

body: bandos > barrows > rune

legs: bandos > barrows > rune

shield: dfs > drag sq > obby/granite > rune

cape: trimmed skillcape > skillcape > sw-cape

V. Mining part
the red dots are coal deposits, the yellow 1s are the gold deposits.

LRC-mine.png
Living Rock remains:

min_livingrock.png

thanks to Tip.It mining guide for pic

they are the bodies of killed Living Rocks and give an amount of living minerals

lvl 73 needed

xp: 25

Concentrated coal deposit:

min_conccoal.png

thanks to Tip.It mining guide for pic

they last for a random amount of time before being "empty".

lvl 77 needed

xp: same as normal coal, 50/ore

Concentrated gold deposit:

min_concgold.png

thanks to Tip.It mining guide for pic

they last a random amount of time before being "empty".

lvl 80 needed

xp: same as normal gold, 65/ore
Same as for fishing: take as much defence bonus as possible.

whenever a Living rock attacks you, try to hugg it around the rock to prevent them from reaching you.

this is the gear I use:

rs134453.png

body: varrock armour* > bandos > barrows > rune

legs: bandos > barrows > rune

shield: dfs > drag sq > obby/granite > rune

cape: trimmed skillcape > skillcape > sw-cape

*The varrock armour gives a chance of mining 2 ores at ones and is very usefull in fuller worlds since the large amount of pll reduce the hits u would take.

U need at least varrock armour 1 for coal and varrock armour 2 for gold.

VI. Melee part

A high defence armour combined with a good weapon is best.

This is my gear:

rs142024.png

body: bandos > barrows > rune

legs: bandos > barrows > rune

shield: dfs > drag sq > obby/granite > rune

cape: trimmed skillcape = fire cape > skillcape > sw-cape

weapon: whip > ...

spec weapon: sgs > excalibur (e) > dds
Summoning can help u lasting longer in the cave or reducing the amount of trips to the deposit box.

Since the whole cavern is non-multi, only healing or BoB familars are of any use.

The best are:

- Bunyip lvl 68 (Melee)

- Unicorn lvl 88 (Melee)

- War tortois lvl 67 (Fishing and Mining)

- Pack Jack lvl 96 (Fishing and Mining)

- Granite lobster lvl 74 or Ibis lvl 56 (Fishing boost)

- Lava titan lvl 83 (Mining boost)

Chosing a familiar that boosts you level is usefull to enlarge the speed with which u mine or fish, this can be very handy in very populated worlds like w84 (see tips).

You can recharge your summoning at the obelisk just outside the cave..

livingrocks2.png
- Put some music on so it make less boring.

- If you are mining gold ore than it is best to take the 2 south-east gold rocks. whenever they are empty, mine coal at the rock near the gold rocks so u can watch whenever they "respawn".

- If you got living rock monsters on you, try to hug them around the rock so they can not reach you.

- Bring summoning familiars so u have to go bank less.

- If you train or fish here, think about the money that you get and not the slow xp. Living rocks arent the fastest xp.

- world 84 is seen as the unofficial LRC-world. The benefit is that the chances getting hit are very low (and since time the deposit rocks last isnt affected by the amount of poeple mining them u get as much ore as on an empty world), tho at the same time the fishing spots will be out very soon.

- when u dont want to wait and check for the active rocks yourself, or just want to have a random chat while mining, join one of the LRC cc's:

Mining Golds - allways in w84, rock calls and general chat

Mininggolds - switches world every once in a while for people who lagg in w84

MG W84 - w84, only rock calls, no general discution

MG W77- w77, only rock calls, no general discution

A lovely base but there isn't anything new around there. Perhaps add info concerning the following:

Anything about W84, the unofficial living caverns one.

How about fishing boosts / mining boosts compared to BoB's?

Anything about experience rates?

Perhaps clearer pictures specified per task. Not using the fishing map for the mining map.

Some info about the deposit box?

Something about the fact that you benefit in multiple ways to have a large number of people there?

Personally this offers little to none over the guide that is already on tip.it ;)

concentrated gold and coal dont last a random number of ores, they last a random amount of time.

also add something about excaliber for healing and boosting familiars.

DK drops (solo/LS): 66 hatchets, 14 archer rings, 13 berserker rings, 17 warrior rings, 12 seerculls, 13 mud staves, 7 seers rings

QBD drops: 1 kite, 2 visages, 4 dragonbone kits, 3 effigies, lots of crossbow parts

CR vs. CLS threads always turn into discussions about penis size.
...
It's not called a Compensation Longsword for nothing.

I've sent a 12k combat mission to have Aiel assassinated (poor bastard isn't even Pincers-tier difficulty).

they give a random amount of coal before being "empty".

lvl 80 needed

xp: same as normal god, 65/ore

You have random amount of coal instead of gold, and typedout god instead of gold (and as said above, the rocks last for a certain amount of time

Is there any difference in speed if you compare going through edgeville or going thorugh falador?

You can't show mining gear without varrock armour.

You do realize that its effect works here too.

Well I got 99 Mining & 99 Fishing in the LRC so, I'll tell you some stuff that might be wrong...

[hide]fixedk.png[/hide]

These are the most common spots where people fish/mine.

Green circles are popular Rocktail spots, going from right to left in order of popularity

Gold circles are the most popular Gold deposit rocks, and black circles are most popular Coal deposit rocks.

There's also a clan chat called "Mining Golds", they call out which rock is up/down.

well they have 4 CC's

Mining Golds - which is always in w84

Mininggolds - w64 atm, but usually switch worlds monthly (for players who lag too much in w84)

MG W84 - w84 (For players who just want rock calls, and no other conversation)

MG W77- w77 and I'm pretty sure it's the same use as MG W84

I would advise against using barrows at the LRC. With something like 60 defense, I barely took any damage when I wasn't wearing armor; granted, I was in world 84, but you should always use that world anyway. If you're paranoid about the creatures, I would recommend wearing rune, simply because it doesn't degrade, forcing you to repair your armor quite often, and because it still provides a decent amount of defense. Also, make sure you wear at least Varrock armor 1 (2 if you're mining gold) so that you can get up to 3 ores at once. Furthermore, all the gold deposits make great safespots; the strikers will only throw their rocks if you are with in about 4 or so squares of them, so you'll be perfectly fine on the other side of the rock. Finally, don't be known as a "solo-miner", or someone that mines a different deposit than everyone else. You'll start the timer on your rock, eventually causing both rocks to be out simultaneously.

i usualy prefer the less populated worlds wich mean i get hit often, that why i prefer the barrows set-up. Since u dont get hit when ur mining (with all the safespots and/or the rockhugging) your armour wont degrade anyway

Since you rarely get hit while mining, that would make Barrows overkill. The extra defense shouldn't warrant the degradation. I used to mine in world 99, and I would wear a rune plate, dragon skirt, and a bat mask and be able to survive on 2 monkfish for several hours with only 60 defense. I'm sure that any outstanding benefit of Barrows would have been due to the extra defense levels I would have gained trying to get the requirements. Whether or not you like to wear Barrows or not should be irrelevant, for the only thing that should matter is that rune should suffice for most players. I'd be more than willing to test this later on, but you should look into it yourself, considering that this is your guide.

Also, don't get me wrong; Barrows is amazing armor and should not be considered worthless, it's just that in this situation it's probably better to pay the few hundred thousand coins that rune costs over the few million, plus repairs, that Barrows costs, because the living rock creatures are so wimpy.

They managed to fry me tough.. Especially in a laggy environment like W84 they can get you a few lucky hits. But I do agree on the fact that rune should suffice. In W84 it doesn't really matter that much. In other worlds it doesn't really matter either. If you can get hit 10-12 times then yes, you will take damage. Anything less then rune and you will take damage. It is all about not getting hit. If you want to use barrows in solo worlds that is fine. But if you don't prevent getting hit, that barrows isn't going to help you in the end. An Enhanced Excalibur to take with you is always nice, in case you do get 1-2 hits on you. In W84, nothing matters.

Also: a nice set-up ALWAYS takes in account varrock armour 1/2/3. Never invest in a rune plate / barrows chest. It isn't worth it.

Oh and realize: Barrows repairs are dirt cheap. Repair them in your PoH and save yet another 33%. Also you are hardly in combat.. I'd be suprised if it costs more then 5k per hour. (1-2 barrows items, more is overkill due to chest/weapons) What is 5k / h.. really. 2.5% of your earnings?

well the rune is added in the armour set-up, but i will keep it after the bandos or barrows set-up. the 3hits u take every time u gonna deposit ur inv wont degrade ur armour a lot but it will make the chances of these hits being high... but like all set-ups these are all about personal preferences.

i do have a question about the varrock armour:

ive done some experements by mining with varrock armour and without and i do not notice any difference in the speed of mining a full inventory.

i get as much double ores when i didnt wear it as when i did.

so my question would be: once u unlock the armourbenifits does the mining multiple ores also work without the armour?

Note: I got 99 mining in these caverns

Add things such as rates per hour, including other factors e.g. Sacred clay pickaxes, master penance horn

Master penance horn = 600k extra xp, total xp given: 1.2m If, it is filled up in less than 9 hours you have gained more xp, overtime means you lost xp so the horn was'nt worth it.

Sacred clay pickaxes = not entirely sure on the xp but i believe its something like 15-20kxp per pickaxe, however these are not advised to obtain as they are not worth the extra time and actually decrease effieceincy.

Edit: All worlds for the cc's are general chat too.

i didnt include master horns and sc pickaxes for the simple reason they are a complete waste in my eyes...

even for me, who really dislikes mining (most lvls thanks to afk in lrc), its a waste to get the sc points or fill up the horn.

well the sample size was about 10k coal so dunno if thats still small. might ofc be because of not being 100% concentrated on this.

lava_miner, do you have any data about the xp/h for coal and gold, havent got the free time to do couple of concentrated hours of mining atm.

if any1 might have some data on the fishing xp/h is allways welcome.

Fishing Rocktails at 99 Fishing + Granite Lobster, I would say about 55k xp/hr.
