As someone said earlier, just spend some money on a few hundred potions and supplies so you don't have to buy them when the manipulators drive them up. Then it doesn't affect you.

Best idea yet. That's why I always keep 10 of each potion (That I commonly use) in my bank just in case.

Only 10? that might not even fill an inventory. The first step of having a stable character that doesn't have to 'save' up money is building a backstock of supplies. STOCKPILE things! I have 10's of millions in supplies easy (not bragging just saying) I'm sure there are thousands of people that have millions or billions? of supplies in their banks.

Its the first step. If you stockpile your supplies you will not be affected.

This. I have hundreds (or thousands) of x pots in bank, and most of my brews/p pots are from MTK, herb runs, nests from ISW, etc.

Solution is to make the GE work the same as the stock exchange. Prices need to update continuously. Increases liquidity and makes raw materials unavailable for only a few minutes or so. Liquidity is always good.

If prices updated continuously, buyouts would be far more effective. We don't need that. In case you didn't know, people manipulate on the stock exchange also.

Buyouts would last minutes and then crash, as the price is unsustainable. Sure you would have spikes in the prices, but there is the natural tendency for markets to clear and equilibrate. So, you could make millions if you timed it right, lose millions if you are the so called "greater fool" and have no effect if you are a normal consumer. I think it is a good parallel. Look at the real markets: hedge funds and prop shops try to manipulate all the time, but to little avail. (May 6 is an exception)

I think what everyone here is forgetting to consider is the people who can't afford to have an inventory of supplies in their banks. Sure it is easy for me to make 500 overloads each month and just leave them there. But to an average player it might be quite expensive. Manipulation clans may not affect much in the long run but in the short run (which can be anywhere from a day to 3 month or even longer) they can cause massive inconvenience in the market.

The ideas and methods used to counter these manipulation clans should focus only on them. No point in hunting down a termite infestation if your plan to attack is by leveling the house. In other words, punish only the main perpetrators but not affect the entire economy. A more fluid update system can accomplish this by making buyouts far shorter, record far more accurate prices, and make it much more inconvenient to run a manipulation clan.

Yes, if ge prices update around hourly, that would take the average 1 month buyout to crash within 1 day or so, while making the rare market rise also until they all crash to their real prices.

Exactly, which is what I've been promoting all this time. Increased liquidity is almost always socially beneficial.

Here's a crazy idea... If you can't afford something on the G.E. because it's too expensive, try making it yourself? If you don't have the skills to make it, get them. Yea, it's probably (read: most likely) going to be a boring, tedious trip at times, but the end results will be more than worth it: when you need something, you can thumb your nose at the manipulation clans and make it yourself. Heck, make MORE than you need and cash in on the manipulation clans' efforts to thwart you. That'll show 'em.

Things like this is why I DIY as much as I can in the game - the only person I need to rely on is myself, and if something goes wrong, I can turn it into a learning experience and become a better player, instead of sitting around pouting like a child on a timeout.

Because the problem more often is that the item CAN'T be bought for max, rather then it costs too much. Sometimes, things like runes are hard to DIY in bulk for fire surge/cog.

I think I'll make myself Barrows armor, a whip and dragon boots. Except getting Veracs skirt ONLY would take weeks of barrowing, and I can't obtain either Whip or D boots because im only 77 Slayer.

Point is, the average item can't be made, and that's what Manipulators sink their teeth into. If they decided to do it with say... Black dragonhide tops, all we have to do is kill a few black dragons, assist crafting and bam! there'd be little point to them manipulating it

The only thing about manipulating clans that bothers me is the advertising.

It angers me to see someone autotyping JOIN MAI CLAN MAKE MYLLZ!!1! with some flashy effects over and over for several days straight.

It's the player's own fault for joining and purchasing the chosen item in bulk, yes. But that doesn't stop the level 3s spamming at G.E. :c
