between a rock picture update

Recommended Posts

I hate seeing outdated pictures! So I try to make my own updated version of them. Here is what I have for the "between a rock..." quest.

These are some ones I think could be added

Here is the actual image update itself.

Also, who does the web coding? Is it paid for, or does a mod do it for free?

Outdated pictures are never attractive, I totally agree. Those are some great HD pictures, and I would add them in a heartbeat except they are very big in file size (last picture is 400kb+). We try to have all of our pages around the 100kb-200kb range to allow virtually all users to load them smoothly no matter their internet connection. But as well as that, quality is important. I'll see if I can reduce/modify your images to make them suitable.

And yes, the site is coded by our awesome volunteer tech admin team and crew. :)

Thanks for your submissions!

okay. My mac scales down pics well. I could do that perhaps. But here is a fixed version of the completion scroll.

I had no idea such a barring restriction was in place! I just tried loading tip it on my ipod, and it runs very quickly. Even the largest pages load in under 10 seconds, that is as fast as on my laptop and PC. That rule makes me angry a little. If there is anything I can do to help improve picture I am willing.

By the way this page loads really fast with all the pics on it. I think maybe, we could persuade the tip it gods to up that limit? Maybe that could be the next poll, see what types of computers people have, then what types of internet.

Here's a slightly smaller version of the last image, although it still isn't exactly small.

If I remember, I'll get after this a little more seriously once I get out of class.

woah! That is great! Could you tell me how you do that? I have lots of other pictures I would like to eventually bring to tip it, and knowing how to crunch the data size would help me do that a lot.

We decided at the start we would not include the quest completion scrolls on our quest guides. This is simply because all the data on it is already located in the Rewards section of the guides. This then allows us to add more helpful images and keep the filesize down as much as we can.

There are no actual technical restrictions and we can display 4 megabyte images on the site if we really wanted to. We simply choose to keep the filesizes of all images combined down as low as possible to accommodate for those on much slower connections. We were a lot more adamant on this years ago, but since then tons of people now have broadband access and only a minority are still on dial-up/AOL, etc. We are much more lenient than we were back in the day. I am all for adding images and maps that are helpful to users, even if they are larger than usual, but if they are purely for vanity we prefer to not include them to save room for more important images. Although for short quest guides, I will often add some vanity images just to break up the text a little. I will add Nyosuht's crunched image, but not the other two as I don't see a huge need for them.

If you are looking for ways to help the Crew out in this area, there are many unconfirmed corrections in this forum we would love your help with and that require picture confirmation so we can get them added. There is an index stickied in this forum for easy access to quests you can help with.

I'll leave this open if you have any additional questions and for Nyo to get back to you.

Thanks for understanding.

thanks cowman. That clears some stuff up. I just went to test out how my mac laptop and my ipod touch handle runehq compared to here. I see they use the scrolls, but I agree, they are a bit vain. I thought you would exclude it, I don't really mind that. But I will try to get some more pics for tip it. After I fixed up the fishing guide for pics, I really noticed we need some revamps. I also just found out what was going on. JPEG images are the best for file size, while my screenshots were always in PNG which is like 10 times more in data with no change in quality. But I did find out how to compress files size. So I will shoot for under 400Kb per page I try to update next time(or correct me give me some maximum, and an average size of total images per page).

also please point me out exactly where the quest place is you were talking about. I would like to make a list of what quests you need updates on, I just became eligable for about 12 more quests.

I just converted the image to indexed mode with the GIMP. The number of colors in the image are potentially reduced, but it often is unnoticeable.

JPEG images are the best for file size, while my screenshots were always in PNG which is like 10 times more in data with no change in quality.

The problem with JPEG is that it's a lossy format, so it doesn't hold up well to multiple edits.

Yup, please do not use JPG as it distorts the image. Continue using loss-less formats like PNG.

okay. I think I will just have to have a private PM chat with Nyo at this point. Thanks for the help. I should have a bucket load of updated pictures in the future.
