Aeon_
I use: 3 Champions2 Scouts Commands: Battle CryChargeShield WallRegenerate Basic strategy is to rush their base, take out one of their archers, then put shield wall on. When they use their champion on you, it'll only hit 100, but you'll hit 400, 600 with battle cry. If you get to 300hp, use regenerate. After their champion(s) are dead just mop up the rest. Sheep Tails
I've been experimenting, but so far my favourite team is:2 Archers2 Mages2 Champions Battle Cry ChargeChastise I'm practically 100% sure it's not the best team, but I play for fun and I prefer attacking from afar with my champions to take out the annoying people my mages and archers can't. I'd say the two above are very good, though. Follower of GuthixThe quill is a miracle, for it drinks darkness and sheds light. Oh right, by the way, I'm a girl. I like this build, only I'd replace the halbs with mages/archers. Mages can 1-hit everything except champs and the range is nice. Something to fill my sig with until I find a replacement. Also check out my blug

Mages can 1-hit everything unboosted except champs and the range is nice, but you need to set up meat shields which can be a lengthy process. Rangers can kite around everything but scouts. All_Is_Great
Reason I don't like mages/rangers is because they cost alot (100 points), and are easily killed by opposing scouts before they even do any damage. This isn't like HoMM3 where ranged attacks can attack from anywhere, but get damage 1/2'd if they aren't in range. So if you want to have a mage/archer, you better plan ahead, don't get lured out by easy scout kills, make sure you can keep them alive. Another thing I do sometimes is bombard their mage/archer, it really screws them over even though it uses 200 points w/o any payback.
Sy_Accursed
I don't think there really is any "best" setup it all depends on your play style and what you come up against. But there's three pairs basic binary opposites:Aggressive - You move on the enemy asap to try and obliterateDefensive - You let the enemy come to you so their formations are loosened and you can take out the weak links while hopefully avoiding deaths. Tank - You rely on heavy units that are slow moving to survive the enemy (eg champions and knights)Sniper - You rely on light units for mobility to out manoeuvre and pick off the enemy (eg scouts, archers and mage) Trooper - You rely largely on your troops and have a few of the cheaper commandsCommander - You rely on a few troops backed up with the powerful expensive commands (eg regenerate) Of course you can aim for a balance between each pairing, but I find leaning more to one or the other results in better squads as if you're dead middle loosing specific units will ruin you. My personal setup is:1 champion1 knight1 archer2 mages1 hally2 scouts With:Battle CryChastiseChargeStoicism My setup is tailored towards defensive sniping with troop power; but I've got enough power to go aggressive, a few heavy units to tank and carefully picked commands that if used in tandem can become quite deadly. Sinkhan
I would think having meat-shields like scouts (maybe foot soldiers since they can tank more than one hit) could help you move your ranged units up and snipe at the enemy. Wall-hug so you only need two troops to defend a unit from scout rushes (unless they charge you). It's just that formations like these could take a long time to set up. Btw, this is all speculation. I've never played the game  Something to fill my sig with until I find a replacement. Also check out my blug
