Sy_Accursed
And been having a play shooting parts of the garden from the living room window.Think I got some fairly nice shots though, especially for just fiddling about. Da_Latios
The only okay shot is the last one. That said, flowers = big no.A lot of these are out of focus and/or have no discernible subject. I'm not sure how you're getting motion blur in broad daylight. Do you have Parkinson's?EDIT: Just looked at your EXIF. What compelled you to use a 250mm focal length on flowers? They're not going to bite you; get up close and personal if you must! Sy_Accursed
I used that lens as it clearly says in the first post I did them from the window having a fiddle with the new camera. And the blur on some of them is cause it was majorly windy; though I don;t think the majority have enough blur to be noticeable especially if I edited them up properly. I don't see wtf you on about no discernible subject, how about the cluster of flowers that are in focus in each picture? I know they ain;t amazing but it was just fiddling to use the new camera; I quite like the purple flowers one and think it'd be pretty nice with the right cropping etc.I also got a few others in a "batch two" that I think are better composed though could do with more editing in some cases; might throw them up in a bit after edit. Soa
Here's a little something - get an empty bottle that can spray water like a windex bottle. Well anything with a nozzle and spray water on the leaves and point a light source on the leaves to give them shine and reflection. Or if you want to look pro you can get an eye-dropper thingie and put a drop of water on a leaf and take pics of that, but you probably need a macro lense for that. There are loads of those pics on dA. =)
Ouchy
If it's windy then use a faster shutter speed... These aren't so much blurred from the wind, but they are out of focus. And why would you shoot indoors? Get outside! Also, don't shoot in Auto Mode. Use your manual features. Read your manual, and play around with things. What is your camera? My relaxation method involves a bottle of lotion, beautiful women, and partial nudity. Yes I get massages.

Hobgoblinpie
It's good that you're experimenting, but, to get decent shots, you have to get outside and up close to the plants. I assume since you have a 500D that you also got the IS kit lens? It's not an amazing piece of kit, but it does have a decent minimum focus distance (For instance, this shot was taken at 55mm with the Kit Lens: http://ben-morrissey.deviantart.com/gallery/#/d28rpfz). I would make the suggestion that you focus on a part of the flower though, rather than just the flower itself. The stigma perhaps? Anyway, the last shot is nice. With the Fuschias you'll want to get closer, and seperate one off from the rest. POH Agility Course, Please Support!
stevepole
Just from these photos I would suggest working on focusing in on your subject but from what everyone else has already said there isn't much left to say.
Sy_Accursed
Yeah yeah I know I need to go out and get up close and get out of auto to do photos properly. But meh new camera arrived on an aweful weather day so I took a few long range shots on auto to get used to it and thought a few were okay-ish And yeah i already figured the kit lens tht came with the 500d ain't exactly brilliant for doing anything other than pan shots, which is all the passable photos I produced and posted were done with the 55-250 lens I got as extra. Need to have a ponder on some other lenses to invest in perhaps; but first I gotta get myself into all the settings and controls and where the buttons to alter them are. Shiny
I'll tell you now, and i'll tell you forever - the 18-55mm kit lens > 55-250 kit lens.
Hobgoblinpie
To be honest, the lens doesn't matter as much s your creativity and ambition. You can make good shots with any lens, but without creativity or ambition you're not going to take good shots whether or not you have 'good' lenses. The 500D is a perfectly good camera, and the kit lens (18-55) is one of the best kit lenses I've ever seen (well, except for the kit lenses on higher end cameras). My Telephoto lens is criticised by almost everyone, but the shots it produces for me are stunning. I will say however, that you shouldn't buy more lenses at least for another month. Get to know your camera well, know what you like to take pictures of, then base your choices around that. Since I have had my camera, I've only bought two lenses. One was a Sigma 10-20mm UWA lens, as I do landscape photography, the other was the cheapo plastic-fantastic Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 for low light photography. POH Agility Course, Please Support! Sy_Accursed
I'm getting there with adjusting to the new cam. Lots of annoying the cat while she sleeps on my bed to get used to the focus and various settings. I'll have to get out and about n try for some proper shots soon.
