(I'm making a new thread for this rather than bump up the old thread as it was about the beta + OP doesn't update it at all.)

 

So this is a thread to discuss the game Heroes of Newerth, which is a "DoTA style" RTS that places an emphasis on teamwork and personal skill rather than micro. I will keep any resources here that I find can help out new players to the game.

What is the difference between DoTA, HoN and LoL?

 

DoTA and HoN are very similar in terms of mechanics. THIS is a great explanation of what has crossed over from DoTA and what is different.

 

The differences between HoN and LoL are fairly numerous. While they both are the same style game LoL puts more of an emphasis on a casual friendly experience. (with "leveling up" a global player who has talents and such that effect your in game stats). Heroes of Newerth was built from the ground up as a competitive and spectator game. Everyone starts on the same playing field from the moment you start the game, the only difference being personal skill and team composition.

 

Mechanically there are several things that separate the two games. HoN has what we call "denying" which is, essentially, killing your own creep when it reaches a certain % of hp to deny a portion of the XP to the enemy. (You can also deny an ally player if they are low enough and have a lethal DoT) LoL has no such thing as denying creeps or heroes. Also unless I'm wrong (someone correct me here) LoL has no such thing as runes, which are "buffs" that spawn every 2:00 minutes in the river.

 

The map is also significantly different, alongside of a lot of other mechanical differences that aren't worth mentioning.

How many heroes (characters) are there?

 

There are currently 70 heroes in the game. 22 of those heroes are original S2 or community creations and the other 58 are DoTA ports.

Stats beg to differ.

I need to start playing this however each time I try to I get shouted at for not knowing what I'm doing. Or using the abilities at the wrong time and things that I need time to learn how to do properly. That's why I've not played much, don't have time to play a game where I can't practice what I need to without pissing other people off.

Seriously. No one really gives a crap what goes on in No stats unless they're just a tryhard or rager by nature. Feel free to add me and/or Elk and we can play some no stats games with you to help teach you the ropes. I mean if Elk (the lesser of the two) can teach Wongtong how to play this game pretty decently I think we can help you out.

Hell we could do a no stats no ab game if we got a bunch of us on (Me, Elk, you, dan, wongtong) and just help you guys out. Could teach you guys a lot about team composition, laning strategy and the like. I mean me and Elk aren't the best players out there (Elk pretty terrible and gets carried by me) but I am technically in the top 1% or so of HoN players PSR wise. :P (almost 1800)

I'm scared to try this because I'd be raged hard. And I also have too many games on my radar right now. TF2, Minecraft, L4D2.

LoL does have buffs but they spawn in the jungle :P

Pesti/Glad were the closest things we had to a carry. Although that is only if you build them right.

OHMYGOD, Legionnare is bald. O_O I've always thought that he had orange hair. WHAT HAS BEEN SEEN CANNOT BE UNSEEN.

 

I think I must be stupid or something, I've been playing forever and I'm still as bad as a newbie. GAH. The game is starting to bore me, it's pretty repetitive.

That doesnt mean he is OP....

Of course if you let him free farm his PK then its hurr durr pebbles kill everything.

 

But support does wards + chick.

And there is not always a hard carry. Lots of teams run like 3 semis and whatnot.

We usually have one carry. Someone that can really push the kills

Witch Slayer is really a carry, he cant gank on his own (Yeah Impale+Ulti maybe, but thats a waste tbh). He is extremely useful in helping others get kills. Also how can Pollywog be a pusher with only 1 aoe spell and two spells you wont cast on creeps?

I'm pretty sure you mean torturer not witch slayer... Witch slayer is Lion.

 

Polywog is a pusher because of her ult.

 

 

And I don't like the term tank in this game. Lego is an initiator, Armadon is a carry (although he does "tank up" in items).
