Hello all,

 

I want to make my own ranged ammo from metal (because I think it is fun, please don't say things like buy/make broad arrows).

So which ammo should I make?

Arrows: I get 15 of these but those are weaker then bolts

Bolts: I get 10 of these and can put gems on top.

Darts: I get 10 of these and are much faster then arrows but also much weaker

Knives: I only get 5 of these and are better then darts

 

So what is the best option for me to make? So I get the most out of arrows, but are these really that much weaker then bolts? (Is it worth making bolts instead of arrows even if I get 5 bolts less?) Also are darts considerable? (I don't think knives are, since I get only 5 of them?)

Wait, what do you want to make exactly, what bars, and do you want smithing, fletching or ranging xp?

 

You get more arrows, but shortbows are also weaker, so bolts will give you more xp per shot.

Making (e) bolt is econormical, but 10 a time may not be a good idea for enchant bolts, if you dont make multiples of 60 each time you will either have excess metal bolts or wasted a spell.

Well I started a new account so I start with steel, then when I reach higher mining and smithing (I won't train smithing only with ranged ammo) I will make mith and addy ammo.

I won't do it for the xp.

My real question is which one does last longer? (So with which type of ammo can I kill the most monsters)

A large part of what you make will depend on what you plan to use them for. So in short answer, you should make all of them depending on your scenario.

 

- Darts are one of the best DPS of any ranged weapon, but only on low defense monsters. (Speed 7+1)

 

- Arrows coupled with a MSB or the highest bow you can get is good for moderate defense level monsters. They pack a little more punch than darts, and can shoot farther, but you lose a shield slot as well as being lower DPS on low def monsters due to its slower speed (speed 6+1).

 

- Bolts are mainly for mid or higher defense level monsters, as they hit hard and accurate. They also get some nice special attacks if you enchant them with gems. Another nice benefit with bolts is the attack is slow (speed 4+1) so you can "flash" prayer using very few prayer points if you wish to do so. Arrows and Darts are to fast to flash effectively for long periods of time.

 

- Knives are basically Darts with boosts stats. If you are looking for more damage, knives are where you want to go, however they are usually more expensive to make than their Dart counterparts. Remember Knives upgrade from Darts, so Addy Dart = Mithril Knive, Rune dart = Addy Knife, ect ect. (Speed 7+1)

 

Low Defense = Darts or Knives

Mid Defense = Arrows or Bolts

High Defense = Bolts

The only thing now, what is a low defence monster, what is a mid defence monster and where do high defence monsters start?

low defence are like combat 1-50? mid defence are like combat 51-85? high defence are like combat 85+? (I know some high monsters have low defence, but if you take the average monster)

You can't really say something based on combat level. For example, Torag the Corrupted has pretty high defence, but living rock creatures have nearly none. Yet lrc are all higher levelled. Rock lobsters, or all Waterbirth monsters for that matter, have extreme combat triangle-based style weaknesses.

Yeah I thought so a bit, but you can say something about a max combat for a defence level? because a level 22 never could have a high defence level.

I can't say anything, really. I mean, look at summoning tanks. If you want fast xp though, I suggest making darts and throwing them at yaks, wearing void deflector + acp.

Ok, thanks anyway :) I will mostly do slayer, quests or for recources for skills (herblore (tars), summoning etc.)

For slayer, ranging is only recommend if you cannon. If you want resources, I assume you'd be killing chaos druids or cave slime, so darts would be best. If you will be doing quests, bolts (since quest bosses tend to have decent defence).

I dislike using a cannon and I train ranging for every monster with a safespot, just because I thinking it is fun, I don't really care that it is slower;).

When training slayer with ranged (without cannon) which type of ammo would be the best to use (on average), bolts or arrows?

Bolts hands-down, unless you slay in Kuradal's dungeon, where you should use darts.
