Official Volleyball thread

So I'm browsing around the forum, and am surprised no one has made a volleyball topic yet.

 

Volleyball is by far my favorite sport. For one, it doesn't involve body contact in any way, so I don't get pushed around as often. It's also one of those few sports that require extensive amounts of skills to master - you gotta learn how to serve, receive, pass, set, spike, block... ohh the fun stuff. You can't just learn one aspect of the sport and pwn at it. You need to know every aspect of this advanced skill.

 

Anyways, do any of you play volleyball? If so, how do you guys play it? With a real net? Or just get a bunch of people standing in a circle hitting with each other? Do you guys choose to play volleyball in your free times, or do you resort to other sports?

 

Myself, I'm part of the volleyball team in my school. Our school doesn't have a permanent net set up (it's only set up during after school practices), so we just get a bunch of other guys and gals from our team and play together. We ALWAYS play volleyball in our spare time, no exceptions. Since only we are the only hardcore volleyballers (it's quite unpopular in our school, unfortunately), we got plenty of space for ourselves to play and practice together.

 

When we were playing in the tournament though, we really didn't stand a chance... ended up in 5th place, just one ahead of last.

 

As for tactics, I'm pretty good at receiving and passing the ball to my teammates, mostly the setter. I can usually get the ball where I want, provided it isn't hit TOO hard. Actually, part of the reason why we lost is because the opponents have DAMN amazing serves :shock: I can do serves and spikes well, but I can't really block, and I'm actually not a good setter, surprisingly. Mainly because I'm not that good at hitting the ball with just my fingers <_<

 

Also, I'm surprised volleyball doesn't have their own "teams" (aside from olympics), like basketball/soccer/baseball/hockey/etc. It's a GREAT sport, I'm sure it has excellent potential for that! It would be really interesting to watch as well :thumbup:

I play some volleyball with my mates in the summer vacation (winter here in norway at the moment), and we play with real nets and such. Quite fun to play with people that knows how to play!

 

Volleyball also has their own teams, it just a niche sport. But of course, it's not like they have big sponsor deals or something :P But volleyball, and especially "sand-volleyball" is a very popular sport.

I've been playing volleyball for my school's team since I was in 6th grade so like... 5 years. I'm the starting setter.

I love playing even though its pretty difficult sometimes. Our season actually just ended, we got 3rd in the conference and lost in the semifinals of the conference tournament. Not that bad considering we had only 4 returning players because 6 people graduated last year.

 

But yeah beach volleyball is actually a pretty big sport. Plenty of people watch at least the girls beach volleyball in the olympics :P probably not always to watch volleyball... but still

I played volleyball all through elementary school and high school; I love it.

 

Haven't played for a while though.

 

Our elementary school team was really good, and we won the championship for our region a few times - highschool we weren;t that good.

I'm not a great setter, but my passing/receiving is decent. I'm best at the net because I'm fairly tall. I prefer to hit on the off side (right side of the net for a right handed player). I also played middle for a bit which is fun and you get to hit quicks (really short sets that only go ~1 foot above the net, easy to hit straight down). Middle is a lot of responsibility though and you have to block on all of their hitters.

 

I might join an intramural team or something this year so I can play again.

I played all of grade school and for my high school. I was generally a middle hitter, but I did play a little outside on certain rotations. My junior year of high school, we were ranked #1 in state and top 25 nationally according to ESPN Prep, but were upset in the regional finals at the our opponent's gym. My senior year our team was very young (we started 3 sophomores and I was 1 of 3 seniors that started). We also lost in the regional finals.

I love the sport especially blocking. We don't have a boy's team @ school so eh. I played in p.e. class but people always fooled around -.-. Now I don't have p.e. class since I'm a junior. gf volleyball for the rest of my life.

Nice blocking on that last point, even if you lost it.

Volleyball is fun as hell to play, not that I really know anything about it beyond the basic rules. I've got a pretty nasty serve though supposedly, although anyone who actually plays could probably return it no problem.
