DarkDude
That was one of the best races I've ever seen. Fantastic win for Button, well deserved.
BloodAngel
Yep, sitting around for 2 hours waiting for the race to restart was well worth it. Unbelievable drive from Button, hopefully he wont get penalties for his involvement with Hamilton and Alonso retiring although the former was Hamilton's fault and the latter just a racing incident. Would have loved to have seen Schumacher get on the podium and this was proof that DRS has taken away the skill of overtaking. I'll admit it does have it's uses such as helping the likes of RBR, McLaren and Ferrari clearing the mid-field but when you have 3 cars fighting for 2 places on the podium I'd prefer to actually see them race for it rather than press a button (not the Jensen variety) and sail past. Nevertheless, an incredible race and the photo finish at the end between Massa and Kobyashi was brilliant. "Unfortunately, the real world isn't the same as a fairy tale." Ginger_Warrior
Today's race made that sprinklers idea look half-sensible for creating a grandstand finish like that. I generally favour Ferrari and even I would say the Button-Alonso contact was a race incident. | Favourite Game Music | Last.fm | HYT Friend Chat Rules |
Danqazmlp
Late post by me due to the annoying as hell staff who run the BBC iplayer. I couldn't watch it live, so I was having to rely on iplayer. Unfortunately, they totally forgot to upload the part of the race that was on BBC1, only the BBC2 part from lap 31 onwards. I tried to wait and see if they would add it but even now it isn't there. Had to watch the first 31 on the highlights, then switch to the full coverage of the last half. Definitely worth the wait though! I agree with Blood, would have loved to see an actual race for the last podium space and it's disappointing that Schumacher lost the podium not because he was slower, but because he was ahead. I would have loved to see him on the podium, but it was not to be. I'm very glad Vettel finally lost a race. So much more interesting to see other teams actually take the fight to him. I think those last 10 laps made up for us losing an epic grandstand finish on the last 10 at Monaco. I personally want them to throw both KERS and DRS in the bin as well as removing all of these restrictions to save money. F1 and it's drivers are supposed to be the fastest in the world, but they are resorting to gimmicks to make them faster, not the technology, engineering and driving skill. Final note, Well earned win by Button, 6 times through the pits, in last position then back to the front. Want to be my friend? moose585
I'm ecstatic that we have an F1 thread on tif! Unfortunately work has prevented me from watching the races much this year. How're we looking in terms of competiton?,i know Vettel's been cleaning up... again. And although i'm not upset he's winning; I agree with you Danq, that it is getting slightly boring. Thoughts? hows the weather up there. where the rich people live. currently, in the poor area its -1.
Danqazmlp
Well another pole for Vettel on a track which I personally detest as a product of modern track building, trying to emulate Monaco but only taking the bad parts (no overtaking) without the good (Atmosphere, danger, glamour). First race of the season I can't say I'm looking forward to watching. Want to be my friend? Ginger_Warrior
I didn't watch qualifying yesterday because I was watching the rugby at Wigan but my decision appears to have been vindicated. 24/24 cars left, pole sitter still leading, all but no overtaking. This has been the ultimate definition of a procession. Sam Tomkins' hat-trick was much more exciting than this. | Favourite Game Music | Last.fm | HYT Friend Chat Rules |
BloodAngel
Mixed feelings about the race, on the one hand it was nice to see DRS was all but useless but on the other it was another uneventful Valencia GP. There isn't another circuit even similar to this so I doubt this was any way indicative of Ferrari and McLaren's pace. Despite everyone saying Silverstone will be a restart for the championship I think it is pretty safe to say Vettel has won it. The interesting thing will be to see who out of McLaren and Ferrari gets their act together quickest to take the constructor's fight to RBR since Webber has had a dismal season for the most part. Oh also Hispania need to be shown the door I think, they're slow, not improving and on more than one occasion their drivers have ignored blue flags costing the front runners valuable seconds and costing Massa a race finish in Canada. At the very least they should be fined and told to improve or leave. "Unfortunately, the real world isn't the same as a fairy tale."
Danqazmlp
I agree Blood about Hispania, they just aren't improving and currently do nothing more than get in the way. Although, the same could be said for Minardi back in the day and look at them now as Force India. Horrible horrible race. I would personally fire Hermann Tilke (The guy who designed the track). He has designed all the worst tracks currently on the calendar. He may have designed some good ones including Malaysia, China and Istanbul, but they are by no means the best, being mediocre. But he has also designed the worst by far, being Valencia, Bahrain, Abu Dhabi and Beijing (if it was a day race we would all hate it). His tracks often try to emulate Monaco but fail abysmally, giving a lifeless track which have no entertainment through passing, but also no close racing due to modern restrictions. Monaco could never be built again due to regulations so don't bother emulating it, it ruins the sport for the fans. Annoyingly as well, he has designed the Korean and Indian tracks for later in the year which doesn't fill me with any confidence whatsoever on the track. The guy in my opinion is ruining modern F1. Get him out, stop going to Valencia and Bahrain and we can kick-start f1. Boring race, but fully expected it. Want to be my friend? BloodAngel
Well, at least it's not Vettel on pole I guess? Expecting a Ferrari win tomorrow, if it didn't rain I think we would have seen Alonso or Massa on pole. Nice to see Christian Horner throwing his toys out of his pram over this whole blown diffuser business. "Unfortunately, the real world isn't the same as a fairy tale." Ginger_Warrior
Tut tut... cheeky! Team orders... Nothing wrong with them of course, from a technical perspective. But Horner would do himself the world of favours by coming onto the BBC after the race and just admitting it was because Vettel is ahead in the championship, and stop with this business about 'the team' and how the racers are free to drive. It's painfully obvious Webber is acting as a second driver. | Favourite Game Music | Last.fm | HYT Friend Chat Rules |
BloodAngel
Team orders were disappointing but did anyone really expect Horner to put his cars at risk on the last lap? Webber should have got Vettel but it doesn't really change anything, Vettel has won the Driver's championship and Red Bull have won the Constructor's. Disaster for McLaren, Hamilton once again manages to hit someone and his race ruined by under-fueling and just bad luck due to an over eager lollypop man for Button.Brilliant drive from Alonso, Ferrari seem to have re-found their form although some of it could be due to the blown diffuser changes for this race so it will be interesting to see if they keep it up in Germany. Vettel is on Top Gear tonight for those in the UK, should be interesting :P "Unfortunately, the real world isn't the same as a fairy tale." Rafftank
The championship is almost certainly done and dusted now, Vettel is just too far ahead, with too much speed, reliability and consistency for anybody else to realistically stop him from taking his second championship. Obviously I'm hoping that this isn't the case, but I can't see how the 80 point gap can be turned around in 10 races, especially given Vettel's form. It's certainly more a question of when, rather than if, and I'm thinking Vettel may win it in... India? Japan maybe?
Ginger_Warrior
An eighty point advantage over his teammate, it's worth emphasising. Alonso is the highest non-RB driver now and he's already conceded defeat. | Favourite Game Music | Last.fm | HYT Friend Chat Rules |
Danqazmlp
Such a shame Red bull once again hold Webber back. He needs to leave that team as he will never be allowed to win there. I'm quietly confident Alsonso can once again, just like last year pull back into contention. Want to be my friend? BloodAngel
I want to believe Alonso, Button or Webber could do it, but he's 92 points behind Vettel compared to 47 this time last year plus last year there were 5 drivers scoring consistently and taking points off each other so really unless Red Bull have a disastrous second half of the season I think it's over. I am really happy to see Webber standing up for himself though, despite being asked 5 times to stop trying to overtake Vettel he ignored his team. Credit to him for actually trying to race. I think the problem RBR have is that Horner loves Vettel, so no matter how well Webber does Vettel will always get preferential treatment. polyvore
Not sure if rumors are true but is Kimi Raikkonen joining Red bull next season in replace of Mark webber? http://blogs.bettor.com/Kimi-Raikkonen-expected-to-join-Red-Bull-Racing-team-for-2012-Formula-1-season-a82900
Ginger_Warrior
Webber said he was in 'positive' talks with Red Bull over a new contract so I don't know how much truth there is in that one. Given what happened last week I wouldn't be surprised if the sporting media are trying to make something out of nothing in the absence of any other news. | Favourite Game Music | Last.fm | HYT Friend Chat Rules |
BloodAngel
Kimi always gets linked to one team or another at this time of year so I'd take these rumours with a pinch of salt. Also as Ginger said, Webber is supposed to be close to extending his contract. "Unfortunately, the real world isn't the same as a fairy tale." Danqazmlp
I would absolutely love to see Kimi back. He has been my favourite driver for a long time. I highly doubt he would return however at the moment and it is probably harder right now to join a top team than ever with so many past Champions in there, even as he is one himself. Danqazmlp
Vettel third, that's what I like to see. Alonso and Webber look very good going into the race, as well as Hamilton. We know Webber can win this race so I am really hoping he can do well. Want to be my friend? Rafftank
That was a fantastic qualifying, the most exciting of the season so far, lovely to see Lewis so close to Mark, and lovely to see that vettel is down in 3rd. Best of all, it shows that in terms of pace, its very close which it hasn't been for awhile, but very unfortunate to see Jenson struggling so much down in 7th ><
BloodAngel
I'd rather see Vettel on pole again than Hamilton in second but ah well. Ferrari have been seriously fast off the start line so I wouldn't be surprised if there was at least one Ferrari ahead of Vettel into the first corner. With any luck Webber will win this just to remind Christian Horner that there's someone other than his little prodigy driving for RBR. "Unfortunately, the real world isn't the same as a fairy tale." BloodAngel
Double post but meh. Not sure how everyone else found the race but I was bored stupid after about 20 laps, there was so little overtaking and not even DRS helped. We did learn two things though: 1. Ferrari are a serious threat to RBR, Ferrari do not do well in cold conditions and they said themselves they weren't expecting much from the race so to finish 2nd here and 1st in Silverstone is pretty impressive. 2. Vettel has forgotten how to overtake. He was the only person in the top 10 to not make a competitive overtake as far as I noticed (yes he did pass a few people, but they were out of position and he usually just followed Massa through). With Webber, Ferrari and possibly McLaren getting their act together it might not be easy for Vettel for the rest of the season. Edit: None of the top 3 drivers will receive penalties even though they all broke the rules post-race and Alonso's car passed the FIA's tests. Nice to see the stewards using sense for a change  "Unfortunately, the real world isn't the same as a fairy tale."
Danqazmlp
I was actually quite entertained by that race, probably due to me really liking Alonso and Webber so loving the tension. Very good race by all three, a bit disappointed Webber lost out though. Vettel just cannot pass, he looked a lot faster than Massa but just couldn't overtake. Very unfortunate for Massa that he got overtaken in the pits there, allowing Vettel more world championship points. A side note, very unlucky for Schumacher to spin when he did as he ended up right back in the position he spun, meaning if he hadn't, he may have ended a lot higher. The headline really is that Mclaren and Ferrari may be back. Bring on Hungary next week! Edit: Loved the commentator's comment at the end 'Could we see the top three Dq'd?' Want to be my friend?
