Bubsa
Maybe I'm not looking hard enough :P But in general, a lot of stores I see rarely have AMD processor laptops, whether Athlon or Sempron. I'm just wondering why really. I'll be needing a lappy in the summer, was contemplating getting one now in the sales. I'd prefer AMD over Intel but would be happy with anything highly recommended. I just prefer AMD due to it performing better in gaming. Anyway, the question isn't really about my new laptop, just why there aren't that many, certainly low-spec, AMD laptops about? (They're probably is and I'm just missing them! >.<) This is how much you all raised for charity. Thank you.
Pyro
Partly because AMD hasn't been releasing particularily strong products focused at that particular market for very long, but also because of the mass-deals involved when purchasing components for OEM-assembled computers. For example, Intel offered Dell a serious discount if they only used Intel processors in some series of computers. There is also the fact that a disturbingly large amount of people still believe that you can measure a computers performance in megahertz/gigahertz, which means that processors from Intel are easier to sell. However, I suspect that this will all change in the near future. Intel will still be by far the largest producer of Home-CPU's, but they will finally have a serious competitor. This, of course, benefits us comsumers.
Slimfar
There are plenty of Laptops out there that use AMD Chips - but I also seem to remember there being a problem with Heat dissipation with AMD but I could be so very wong about that :!: Many thanks to Pup for my new Siggy :)

I could be wrong also.

Mementh
the fact AMD was focusing on the power pc market intel offing exclusive deals to leave out AMD (IE: you can't use any amd products and if oyu do you will pay a extra 40% for the products you rely on) but i remember seeing walmart had a few AMD processor laptops... there not made by a brand name i knew but they were AMD The following statement is true. Chaosbringer
Generally, (Well maybe not so much now) AMD's had a very big heat issue, a lot of the Desktop chips would get very hot and require more extensive cooling than a Intel system. The energy is dissapated via heat, so in essance you need more power to run a AMD system, Intel's M Processor is actually very good, giving nice output in speed/MHZ for the lower then AMD equivilent power needed. With laptops, battery life is something that everyone should take into consideration when buying a laptop. AMD have only really become a major threat to Intel in the past year or so, as more and better computer games come out, meaning people in the know suggesting the superior AMD processors for the people interested in gaming. Laptops aren't generally designed for gaming, sure you can get gaming laptops, but the cost (for one that will be able to play decently new games of average settings) a minimum of $3000 AUSD, when you can get a much much much better desktop. And even so, it has a portability, but if you really want to use it as a gaming machine, you'll have to set it down on a table, plug it in, get yourself a nice mouse and then you can enjoy it, but can you really? While LCD screens have gotten better in recent times, but many people (and myself if my opinion has any worth :P) believe that a quality CRT moniters are very good for gaming, while with some Laptops, you get a decent processor, memory and such, but get shafted on the screen. If you can, I would wait untill around June, chances are that AMD will be expanding on their moblie chips in the next year, June gives you a chance to be able to get some of the newer chips. ~Chaosbringer

When it comes to desktop processor, the Athon64-series consumes a lot less power and hence produces a lot less heat than any of the latest models from Intel using NetBurst (Pentium, etc). The Pentium M, naturally, is more power-effective than it's desktop counter-parts, but a mobile processor should not be compared to a desktop processor. A more sensible comparision would be Pentium M contra Turion64, and in this field the competitors are fairly even. My one and only point is that while AMD had heat problems a few years ago, this problem is now far more common on Intel platforms than AMD ones. Currently, I would not consider an Intel processor in any non-laptop system. There is a fair bit of fanboyism involved, but the specs certainly aren't in Intels favor at the moment.
