December 30, 200520 yr Well today I went to Future Shop and to buy a new video card. Well previously I was checking out their site to see what they had and to my surprise they were selling a ATI Radeon X700 Pro ViVo AGP 256MB card for only 159.99$ So I decided that I would buy it with my Christmas money. When I got there the guy told me that they were out of stock (despite it saying that they were in stock on their web site) but the guy pulled out a Geforce FX 5500 OC saying that it was basically the NVIDIA counterpart of the Radeon so I shrugged and said why not, since there was a 90$ rebate. Now I don't know if that was such a good idea. Was the guy actually telling the truth or was he lying to me? I'm not sure considering the Radeon X700 Pro's original price was 299$ and the Geforce FX 5500's was 179$ So did he rip me off? because if he did I'm going to drive back there tomorrow and return it.
December 30, 200520 yr Well what are the memory speeds and clock speeds on both cards? I personaly would have went with the x700 only because I find ATI's cards have better preformance for the price of mid ranged cards. It comes down to the specs on whats better though.
December 30, 200520 yr Author You know, about that this throughly pisses me off... THE SPECS ARE NEVER ****ING LISTED ON THE GOD DAMN SITES I mean really, I wanna compare the two and they give me This card runs really fast! 6000 Triangles!! and never give me the stats.
December 30, 200520 yr You got well and truly RIPPED OFF. ATI Radeon 9*00 series = nVidia GeForce5*00 series. ATI Radeon X*00 series = nVidia GeForce 6*00 series. ATI Radeon X1*00 series = nVidia GeForce 7*00 series. Use that for comparison. A Radeon X700 Pro would be approximately the same as maybe a GeForce 6600GT? Don't quote me on that, I'm kind of rusty with graphics cards. A GeForce 5500 = Radeon 9700 at best. Notoriously Trollish.
December 30, 200520 yr I was thinking he got ripped off but didn't want to say anything till someone more wiser posted. I would say the x700 is equall to about a 6200gt maybe a little better. I heard my x850 pro is equall to a 6800gt or 6800 unltra.
December 30, 200520 yr The X700 Pro was ATI answer to the 6600gt which is quite a recent mid range card. (Although the 6600GT was the better card). The GeForce 5500 is a old entry level card, which preformed slightly better then the ATI 9600. The 9600 series (Which included several great value for money cards) was replaced by the x700 series. This is a link to a review of the 5500, for comparison reasons consider that the x700 pro would preform better then the top cards in that review. http://www.guru3d.com/article/Videocards/124/1/ In short, you were ripped off massively, the two cards are barely comparable. In general the best value for money cards at the moment are: 6600 GT X800 GTO 6800 GS
December 30, 200520 yr ATI STINKS ON ICE NVIDIA WAY TO GO GET NVIDIA!!!!!!!!!!! OR ELSE http://s7.invisionfree.com/Legends_Of_Sara/Join My clan. Leader Is 1234king0 or PajsanosRequirments: 50+Combat or 45+ in any NON-MEMBER SKILL. TY n Peace out.
December 30, 200520 yr The X700 Pro was ATI answer to the 6600gt which is quite a recent mid range card. (Although the 6600GT was the better card). Woo! I was right, I only took it off the top of my head too. Guess I still have a little computer knowledge. ^_^; Notoriously Trollish.
December 30, 200520 yr I seem to remember my work experience supervisor telling me that the geforce5 series were all rather bad. So yeah, as plenty of other people have pointed out, you were ripped off. If its not too late, you should try to return it and get your money back other wise your stuck with a graphics card from 2 series ago.
December 30, 200520 yr Author Oh mang I know I figured it out through E-Bay stats, oh man is that guy going to get a yelling out when I run into the store with the video card. And yeah I just got it today so I'm going to return it and hope to god that the Future Shop in Kitchener restocks before the Boxing Day sale is over. That guy was such a [bleep]0t. When I came into the store and asked if they had it the guy said they were out of stock and then he pulls out this [cabbage]ty little piece of crap and says that it's the NVIDIA version of the X700... bastard.
December 30, 200520 yr The FX5500 is a very slightly warmed up version of of the FX5200 - and is the bottom level of Nvidia's directX9 hardware, with rather too much left to software (the vertex shaders are software, as is anything else they can get away with doing that way). Even the FX5600/5700 models (full DX9 hardware) would not be a match for the X700pro

Maybe you should have taken it upon yourself to do the research rather than letting some underpaid disgruntled employee do your 'research' for you. You realize it wasn't exactly a Graphics Card shop, right? I just posted something! ^_^ to the terrorist...er... kirbybeam.
December 30, 200520 yr 179$ For that card? Thats outrageous. It's like not even a last generation card... its a last last generation. Sure, it can still play most games well... but I bought my fx5700 a year ago for 150$.... ...
December 31, 200520 yr Author OH SNAP! I got the X700, I had to go through 4 cities to get it but I finally have it, however I have no idea if I got it plugged in right since this is the first time I had to connect it to the power supply. Everything seems to be running right, my Hard Drives are good but the only problem is that whenever I get into Windows XP it says that a new hardware has been found and it's listed as "Unknown" any ideas? I also didn't yell at the guy since I went to a different store this time.
December 31, 200520 yr The instructions should give you a detailed setup guide ;) I remember for the 5200 FX that I have you had to not let windows do any hardware detection until after you've finished setup I just posted something! ^_^ to the terrorist...er... kirbybeam.
January 1, 200620 yr Author Yeah I checked the manual but I was a bit iffy on whether I was doing it right or not since the manual had it set it up for only one hard drive and I had two so it was kind of wacked but I think I did it right. There's no crashes or anything.
January 1, 200620 yr It really shouldnt matter how many hard drives you have I just posted something! ^_^ to the terrorist...er... kirbybeam.
