For me, after nearly 7 years of not being clanned, I finally decided to try one out. It's a lot of fun, and in the space of a little over 4 months, I am an Event Co-Ordinator, Clan moderator, and offered a leader position (turned down for the time being, pending clan growth). My point is that I have excelled in a new environment, and made some new friends. The clan has also gotten me out of my shell so to speak, getting me to leave behind my life of just killing things I can handle with enhanced excal and a bunyip, and into the world of GWD and Corporeal Beast. The other EC is working with me so that we can both get 80 dunge, and chaotic weaponry, something I would never have undertaken alone.

So on that front, I am having the best time in the game I have had in probably the last couple years. I have a great circle of new friends (minus the the ones who bot, which the clan actively works to find and remove), I am succeding at new things, and yet there are problems.

In my older circle of friends, while I was always in the midrange of my friends list highscores, I was normally on top of just about everyone I talked to on a regular basis. The clan on the hand, has several very successful players, in terms of levels and wealth. It has somewhat detracted from my own accomplishments in a way. It's also inspired me to go after some of my goals, get a few more 99's and whatnot, which has also forced me into the position of needing far more money than I have or can quickly come up with.

I guess its true that you can never have enough (which becomes a problem if you ever have everything). For me getting into clans has highlighted to me that which I have yet to obtain, but also motivates me to pursue things.

What clan?

I have quit several times, dropping every last thing in my bank. I have dropped hundreds of millions on the ground and into the partychest. I even sold my red phat on the g/e price controlled way below its values and dropped the coin on the ground. why?

Because I have always been aware of the nature of fun in games like runescape. You get fun from dreaming of what you want and working for it. When I get there, I have to start over to have fun again. Try getting a firecape when you already have one, then try getting one after a 3 month quit and your bank blows. Its way more fun doing the later.

I currently am recovering from my last rest, got about 125m in a month i think, and i am having a blast. I will inevitablly have to drop it all on the ground again, but I always have fun when I play.

I call [cabbage]. In no way is playing with a crappy bank fun. I don't see how the experience in the fight caves changes whether you have a decent bank or not, and it would only be more fun if you had great gear. Btw i'll take the 125M off you're hands anytime you want to have a little fun.

How can you call [cabbage] to someone's personal preferences? Would you call [cabbage] if I said my favorite fruit was an apple? Sheesh

I have a friend who has a maxed account. He never plays it, because having everything in the game is [bleep]ing boring. Instead, he started a new account, to start fresh. It was originally a quest pure, but he's kind of expanded it since then. Point is, some people do find fun in not having to worry about the hundreds of millions of gold associated with decent gear/stats at high levels. A few million is easily enough for you to get by on a noob character, and the game is more challenging when you can't just buy everything, too.

I totally agree; the only reason i still play is because I feel like I have some "unfinished goals" to complete before I can finally just play for fun. Its been like that for years, always "Working" with the thought that later on ill finally be able to "enjoy" the game. Its probably the reason Ive stayed with rs longer than every other mmorpg ive played. I "beat" Wow in under a year, along with all the others. The best part was, "Beating" them WAS the fun and afterwards the game lost its luster. With RS theres this huge expection we put on one another.

Take Boss hunting for example;

When I first got into boss hunting, I had so much fun. I had no idea what I was doing and THAT was the fun part. Learning how to last longer, being excited when id stay for 5 more kills then the last time. Then I reached a certain point where it became, "I need to get ovls, turm, and a yak to be better, then ill have fun again". Now I need... 200m for turm, 120m for ovls, 30m to get charms and 40m to get yak. So thats almost 400m I need to finally have "fun again".

Heres the other thing Ive noticed with rs;

The gear on this game takes hours to just AFFORD! What ever happened to getting the levels just to EQUIP the gear? Theres one thing I think jagex should do to make it more fun for the higher levels.

In Wow and other MMORPG's ive played, in order to prevent higher levels requiring a ton of money to get gear that suits their levels, the gear is no longer tradeable. Meaning, they have to quest (jagex has this and people love it), but they also have high lvl gear dropped from dungeons and monsters. But the key to this is, its NOT TRADEABLE. Why is this important?

Instead of boss hunting for money, they boss hunt for gear. Making money less important.

Im not talking about gear thats the equiv of bandos. Im talking gear for lvl 85+ stats. That way Bandos/etc is still the best gear you can BUY.

I'd rather that Jagex keep the majority of untradeable items in quests and as end-game skill products only, like dungeoneering's chaotic weapons. Keep it out of either low or high gear monster drops.

Dynastyfan's post reminded me that the most common story in Runescape is the from-rags-to-riches story and all its variants. Depending on how your head wraps around the idea, this style of playing can be pretty addictive. It's just got that certain appeal about building something new with your own hands and watching it grow. Makes it feel fulfilling.

For me there will always be fun. I do take this game seriously though (heck I've been playing 9 years without getting sick of Runescape!). So when I die and lose my items, I get upset, because I work REALLY hard for my gear. The most $ I've ever had was 167M, however I've just recently started to camp frost dragons. So my total wealth is now around 218M, and I'm slowly getting towards my goal of a Torva Platebody.

Personally money makes me happy. There can never be enough of it in my eyes. Whether it is buying everything you always wanted, or throwing a few drop parties when there is TOO much of what you don't need. If I had all the money in the world I'd be one happy scaper. Here's just a list off the top of my head of what I would buy:

Full Torva (epic looking melee armour)

Red partyhat (goes nice with my slayer cape)

White partyhat (goes nice with armadyl coloured rune armour)

All buyable 99's (always wanted all 99's)

If I ever managed to get all that, I would then probably move onto buying rares or something else which takes my fancy :-)

I do think people take this game too seriously though when it comes to 'efficiency'. I'm constantly being called a 'noob' for not having a chaotic rapier at frost dragons. Really? Is it that important to flame a random person such as myself for having fun? Honestly, I would like to get a chaotic rapier one day, but right now it's not on my list because I simply do not like dungeoneering enough to get 200k tokens. Korasi's sword is doing me a world of wonders there and I'm content with my gear.

So yeah, if any observations I've made it is the 'efficiency freaks' who troll others for not having the 'right gear'. Sometimes people just want to have fun without being trolled to death. Most of the time the player/s do want the best gear, but just don't have it at that point in time.

Because you could have all the fun you would have without the money with the money. it would be more like calling [cabbage] on someone saying they preferred to have a rotten apple, rather than a fresh one because they find it more challenging to and entertaining to have stomach viruses in return for the taste of eating the apple. If someone thought fight caves was to easy with max gear, just buy welfare gear and do it, you don't have to dump your bank to have fun.

If, for some odd reason someone did not care about any of the gold they had, they could just spend it on a bunch of pk gear, or some really high armour, and then go pking and see what happens and get a kick/lots of kicks out of it. Or they could just go stake with it. Risking your bank for some excitement would be a lot more logical than simply dumping it. I also don't see what you mean by 'worrying' about having too much gold. Is it going to overflow your bank and the evil gold monster going to kill you?

No, he didn't dump it. He just rarely goes on his main anymore.

And it's not worrying about having too much gold, it's worrying about not having enough. Stuff doesn't cost much as a noob, but when you get to be a high level, it's often difficult to afford anything.

Unless you're making a pure or something, stuff is still going to cost the same, only instead of it being difficult for a high level it just isn't achievable for a low lvl. If the point is to just not think about the stuff you wold want as a high level, i don't see why you have to create another account to do that. Just not care?

Honestly it is up to the person what he wants to do, I just thought the guy that just dropped 125M could have achieved his goal with much simpler and fun means, and that the goal was in of itself kind of silly.
