Pixel Sig Tutorial

jabraulter

Recommended Posts

I was bored and have been told that my sigs are decent, so I decided to create a tutorial.

pixeltutorial6kh.gif

Rip me....I rip your face.

NOTE: I actually make my backgrounds last. I chose to ahve people create it first because I have done it on some sigs. An example would be the "Room Sig" I created for monkey933 (seen as PIXEL ARTIST in tutorial).

Just do what suites and is easiest for you.

Thats not a very gd tut

for a start it doesn't give much detail on how to do each stage, all other pixel tuts like give you step by step of like 4 - 10 images on building a character and shading guides that have again like 5 images.

Plus that is a totally random way to do a pixel sig.

like 90% of pixellers draw a complete line work, then 70% shade characters then the bg, and 20% just shade in areas

Hardly anyone will make a bg, colour it, then draw characters over it

Paw claw it's a new way of making a signature. For all you know it could be easier than drawing linework first. Give it a try first before jumping to conclusions

i'm not jumping to conclusions I am juts pointing out how the majority do it.

Plus I tried without doing linework once was so muhc harder cause u had to visualise while zoomed in where everything was going, where as with lines you got guidelines to follow and remove later on

I thought that tut was quite decent, though some steps may differ from other people's it still explains quite nicely about different aspects with examples shown.

It never said not to do lineworks, it just suggests that you do the bg first, everyone has their own style, and it's pretty pointless to try and guide someone through your own linework. Maybe advising them how to do their own.

After a bit more thought (and a want to try and remain less outspoken for 06)

It is alright, however I dodn't think that is a coventional way to pixel or very useful to beginners. I would say for people like me who have started pixelling and are getting there it could be useful as it offers some nice tips for doing special effects and stuff

But as a general tutorial it is not so good for beginners as it doesn't give enough on HOW to build a character etc

tutorials for pixels shouldnt be on how to draw... if you dont already know how to draw your gonna be rubbish

thanks everyone for the sigs!

Well some people can't do one but can do the other.

and anyway I found when I first started pixeling that constructing the character was a different process completely to when I do hand draw characters.

i mean pixel I normal get a basic head shape then build down arms then body and elgs then add hair equipment etc

Hand drawing I normally start with a sword or something, join the hnad on to it then work outwards from that

welll no offense, but your pixels arent exactly the best..(i know mine arent either but just saying)

I know thier not but that is because I am new to this.

I mean I only started pixelling in october 05 and have dun a grand total of 3 pixels plus 1 wip

so of course I am not the best, but you cannot deny that I am improving each time.

and my talent at makes no difference to fact drawing methods aren't neccessarily the same for computer images and real life stuff, but anyway best stop hijacking this thread for a trivial argument type thing

Good guide, might come in useful. but i didn't quite understand Point B for shading.

Yeah, that was a bit tough to explain. Okay, imagine it is nighttime and you are standing on a gravel road.

Take a flashlight, turn it on, and place it on the ground. The light will still go forwards, but the tiny rocks in the road will cast shadows.

I know it is tough to explain. Just look at it this way. The more rough and bumpy a surface is, the more shadows it will cast when light is applied from the side.

It's hard to explain.

----

Anyhow, Paw, I'm not offended form your posts. Don't feel bad. To be honest, I don't make my backgrouns first unless they are inside and determine how large my character needs to be.

Second, I think I am one of the few who colors along the way. I get so anxious to see what the character will look like colored, so I do it then and there.

And lastly, I think you've got me wanting to make an actual Character Creation tutorial. It would be fun for me and I think those really beginning wouldd get a lot of help from it.

I didn't really see your first post as a flame. Apology accepted ;)

BTW, Paw, I read your comment about not being able to visualize the picture when you are zoomed in. What I do is make a complete sketch of at least the character on paper with pencil, then scan it in. It's so much easier than trying to control a mouse with a tiny one pixel pencil, anyway. Then I scan in my sketch and, I mean really, trace over it. I konw that I won't make mistakes that way, and most of the time, I end up adding smaller details after I have scanned it in.

I don't see this method as being bad. I mean, you drew it, there's no harm in tracing it is there?

Thanks for comments and critiques, everybody. They will go into my next tutorial over Character Creation. :P

Well I did my first too pixels with scanned in line work, but I think most will definately agree my 3rd and current wip definately far better since i did line work on comp and I amazed someone actualy accepts what i am saying, my views must of become more mature and not so rude

well i got a few tips for your tutorial

don't make it one entire image add text in the forum itself because it will be more easy to edit as i found myself editting allot when i did my tutorials.

as for B. i think you mean that a rough wall has more texture you would want to add more highlights and shadows rather then midtones and more random depth over it?

i consider it to be more of a reminder then an explenation, the question it raises is: BUT HOW..?

all objects respond different to light because of there shape and angle.

now i see allot of potential in this tutorial

Ohhh, you described that texture shading a whole lot better than I did. It seems you actually understood what I was trying to go for. Thanks for suggestions.

As far as making the tutorial separate images, I would have if I hadn't been lazy. I would have had to host like, a billion pictures, which takes some time ^_^ Perhaps I'm just lazy.

The girl should have been basked in a red tint from all the flames, and the shadows would be going up from her feet, not down from her head.

That's too much work  I knew that the flames should have cast greater highlights on the girl, but I guess I just decided that the healing spell was what cast the most light...

I dono. I quit. :x

Thanks for CC everyone.
