Or doin epic jobs, I suppose. For example, me making a ship may earn me a few merits, but repairing said ship after a battle woldn't let me nab any. (I think, maybe?)

Anyways, I'll be the repair jockey, but Wyvern can tell me what to repair, and in what order. Sound good, Nex?

 

You will probably get merits for repairing another ship, or something...since it is helpful to whatever country/faction.

Or merits from selling a completed ship back (You can't use another ship so...)

Building a new ship, from scratch, would be impossible.

 

Depending on whether or not I can use drones as clients, you're more likely to be the repair manager.

Drones will be like they used to be...Semi-Intelligent and persistantly working to kill humans and destroy objects, overwhich a thin veil of protocols prevents from from doing so directly.

Earth, Nex, thanks for your suggestions but my final answer to both of your ideas is NO. [hide=Here is my solution:]

Salem is placed in the middle of a place she's never been to before, unkowling being challenged to survive (aka the scientists are putting her through a test that she doesn't know about yet). Salem (sometime after she finds civilization) hides her wings (like the Flock does numerous times in the Maximum Ride Series) and passed as a normal human being, and gets luckly, volunteering to work on the Unity while she was looking for a job.[/hide]

Of couse, when the first session starts NOONE 'cept Salem herself should know that she has wings, that way she can avoid getting in trouble for being an illegal experiment.

 

And another reason she's not "from" any specific country is that I hate choosing sides thus I can sympthsize freely and not have to be on any given side to a conflict (except that I am a good person and the bad persons must die)

This was not how it was meant to be...You were not meant to be sent up in the Unity, you were the backup crew...something that existed on paper to satisify a trifling commitee on one thing, or another... But now, now, as you sit in the small room, watching the Infamous-Would be-Captain Nero shouting the odds with a tired looking UN official, who's name might very well have been spelled out by a bowl of alphabet soup thrown at a wall, you think to yourself...I really need the bathroom.

 

Finally, Nero headbutts the official, who falls to the ground in a bloody mess. He then opens his wallet, throws a few Terran Dollars on his chest, then he turns, facing all of you, and draws his finger across his neck, smiling. Then, charateristically he gets out a smoke, and lights it as he goes into the corridor.

 

While you all sit in your seats, you hear a russling. As you look over you see Zeitark, he is casually opening an envelope, marked with a large Union Jack. He notices you looking, smiles slightly, and remarks 'Didn't you get one of these?'

It takes you a moment, but then you remember that you did, and you fish it out of your pocket, ready for reading.

As you are aware the Unity Space Mission has been pushed ahead following the unexplained wormhole/stargate/magic glowy portal thing, that has appeared in orbit of Earth. The UN has decreed that only the Unity may investigate, and so that means you will need to go through, scan, communicate or hack whatever the hell is in there.

It should be obvious that everyone else will have the same objective, so your secondary objective will be ensuring that no one else gets hold of the data...or if they do, they don't get the chance to transmit it back to their home country.

You can't lose spent merits, and you can only spend merits at the disgression of the moderator.

If you go below 0 merits then your merit total will be reset next session. (Aka, if you majorly screw up, you won't be penalised FOREVER)

Unspent merits DO carry over.

10 merits = 1 standard upgrade (Maybe double, triple or higher for player created upgrades)

Also, the amount of real memory would be unchanged:

1 byte is nominally understood to be 8 bits (an octet), however it can mean any length of bits.

Ergo, a computer with 24 bytes (octet sized) would have 192 bits.

If you used the same computer, but defined a byte as 86 bits, then it would have 2 bytes.

The number of bits has not actually changed.

Objectively, there is no difference in the amount of memory.

 

(Though larger memory is supportable at larger bit systems, due to the increased address space. And one could make a long winded arguement that the same data now takes up more space, as a file with only 8 bits need a full 86 bits to be stored. So more space is wasted. However, I am not overly fussed about this.)

I actually meant 96 bit, as in 32 + 64 bit, I was just a little confused due to x86 systems.

 

The gravitons are supposed to be weaponized, so they squish attackers against the floor.

 

The recycler means I actually need to have a ship to change, so it would actually just be redesigning an already constructed one. It would also be for stuff like stationary weapons.

Recycler would be fine for converting 1 bay into another in about 10 minutes, at a cost of 1 level.

Or converting a gun into a different gun.

Choice between two missions:

 

Voyager Three

The American space probe, Voyager 3, has mysteriously stopped transmitting, and the Unity has been requested to investigate what has happened.

The probe is some 5 light days away from Earth, so going on this mission prevents any Earthly interactions, for the duration.

 

Massivesoft

The American Government, on behalf of the multinational company, Massivesoft, has sent a request to the Unity to transport one Massivesoft's engineering teams to one of their(Massivesoft's) Luna bases which has lost power. The crew have activated the emergency transmitter, but security measures mean that they can't reactivate the base on their own.
