that means that they are maintaining the servers, fixing them, wait a couple of hours and you'll be fine...

I doubt that two more hours will help when he's been having trouble "every time for the last 2 weeks".

dutchyg:

Try clearing your temporary internet files (Tools -> Internet Options -> Delete Files in Internet Explorer).

Try visiting sites you don't normally use and see if they work, and, if they don't, paste the exact error you get into a new reply here.

Try clearing your DNS cache; type "ipconfig /flushdns" in the Start -> Run dialog (don't do this if you can't access previously unused websites as above).

If those fail then please give the exact error you receive when trying to access the RuneScape website.

This is what it shows Collective:

DNS Request not processed. The server is undergoing maintenance.

Also, when i type 'ipconfig' in start run it opens black screen briefly and then closes? But anyway yea, the above thing is what the runescape site shows.

run cmd

ipconfig /release

ipconfig /renew

ipconfig /all (chekc and see if you have some ip address and if u have an itranetwork such as routers, hubs, etc then you should see the ip something like 192.168.*.* (* being a wildcard)

Also if using ie go to tools internet options clear your history, cookies, cache, and temporary internet files make sure offline files are checked also. Also if using IE under internet options go to advanced and restore defaults. (You will have to redo any changes that you have previously done to this list.

If using other browsers clear the cache, history, saved passwords, temp files, cookies. Also some programs such as mozilla use a different temporary internet folder. Navigate to it from My computer and make sure everything is deleted.

To check and make sure all temp files are clear

Win xp - maybe 2000 (not sure) (if you cant do this then use other method)

1.Open up My computer (or Windows Explorer)

2. Choose C:\

3. Choose documents and settings

4. Choose your user name

5. Now you should see a translucent folder called Local Settings

If you do not see this proceed to step A

6. Now navigate to history, and delete all files

7. Go back to Local Settings and repeat step 6 for Temp

8. go back, delete all files INSIDE of temporary internet files.

9. Now in the address bar at the top add this to the previous file path

\content.ie5.....

The full path shoulde be something like C:\documents and settings\Owner\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.ie5

10. Delete all files in this folder

For win 98,95, others.

1. open my computer

2.Navigate to your Windows folder

BE CAREFUL IN THIS FOLDER, IGNORANCE WILL SCREW UP YOUR PC

3.Delete all files in the directories temp, history, and temporary internet files (They may be located in the windows\system32 folder....its been so long)

4. When your at the temporary internet files add to the file path

/content.ie5

the full path should be something like C:\WINDOWS\Temporary Internet Files\content.ie5

STEP A - Making Hidden files and folders visible

1.In windows explorer click on tools at the top and navigate to folder options

2. Click the view tab

3.Somewhere down the List you should see Hidden files and folders

make sure the option to be able to view or see them is checked.

There that should clear up any problems... I tried to have it at a very basic level as not knowing your knowledge of Windows Explorer and the OS

Now if you have something other than windows i can't help ya there

Now exit all programs and empty the recycle bin

First off, i really appreciate your help - however, i am very dumb with computers :( FOR INSTANCE , when u say "run cmd" i dont know what your talking about.... Furthermore, i use mozilla firefox so this may make some of your directions different?? Also, i have tried typing ipconfig in 'run' and a small black screen pops up for a split second and then disappears - thus, i cant type anything in there like /release or /renew (if you meant for me to type those things in there?)

Also, i have played runescape for more than a year - why suddenly after doing nothing differently would the temp files or so make the site say that it is under maintenance??? It doesnt make sense - if, possibly, a family member blocked the website somehow, how could i unblock it? This is just hypothetically but what if it was blocked? Anyway, thx for ure help so far - i havent had the opportunity to go try your steps yet, but soemtime in the next few days i likely will.... I really hope i get it to work and then if i do please accept some gp in game :D

By "run cmd", he means click the Start button, click "run...", type in cmd, and press enter. Then type in whatever he instructed you to do.

Dutchyg: What's your Internet Provider (ask your parents if you don't know)?

Also, everyone suggesting him to renew his DHCP lease... that will happen *anyway* if he reboots the pc, and as he's been having the problem for 2 weeks, and no admin in their right minds has their DHCP leases set to last so long, it probably won't help at all.

Dutchyg: if you're using Firefox, you should use the instructions Aldeon posted for 'Mozilla'. I doubt they will help though, and clearing the cache from Tools > Options (Inside Firefox) should do the same thing anyway.

Internet provider - telus i believe? By the way Hannibal - ken je nederlands? :P

Anyway, the stuff u mentioned like DHCP - whats that? I am so dumb.. sry everyone. I still have to go try the cmd ipconfig /renew thing - yet, will that mess anything up for a while??? My brother has his own computer which shares the same internet - will it screw his up?? Also, is it possible that he blocked my runescape website to be an idiot? Lol, if so, can i unblock

- anyway, yea, still gotta try to /renew stuff prolly today or tomorrow i will.

I've now tried to do all the file deleting - some files it wouldnt let me delete but many it would.. Yet, this didnt help.

When i do the cmd ipconfig stuff it doesnt even work - it sais this when i try /release, /renew, or /all : /realease is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file. Likewise, it sais this for /renew and /all as well.

So, what do i do? I think my runescape days are over..........:( and i was so close to 85 mining....

In Start -> Run type "command" then, in the box that appears you'll type "ipconfig /release", "ipconfig /renew", or whichever commands the instructions given specify.

Ok.. i went through the steps Aldeon gave and it seemed to be doing stuff so yea.. However.. Runescape still does not work - gives the same message.. I don't understand why because the frieken site IS NOT under maintenance.. Im getting really mad now because i havent played runescape in about 3-4 weeks....

Please, someone, IF IT IS POSSIBLE TO BLOCK WEBSITES FROM BEING ENTERED, AND IF SOMEHOW RUNESCAPE HAS BEEN BLOCKED FOR ME, HOW CAN I UNBLOCK???

Im stupid with computers but if this is a possibility then it may be the answer... Any more ideas anyone?? Please get back to me on the blocking hypothesis

Try, and post the results of, the following, seperate, ideas:

- Start -> Run -> command -> (in the black box that appears) "nslookup http://www.runescape.com"

- Try accessing the RuneScape site via another JAGeX site, e.g. http://www.runescape.co.uk

- Try accessing the RuneScape site via one of the IP addresses, e.g. http://69.22.158.227/

- Ask your family if they blocked it

I looked up that error message of yours on Google and found noone having a similar experience with any site.

I have tried your ideas Collective. Results:

For nslookup http://www.runescape.com i get a response:

DNS request timed out. -- timeout was 2 seconds-- ***Request to cachednsbc02.nssi.telus.com timed-out

runescape.co.uk didnt work

I tried your ip and yes, i got to the website. HOWEVER, on every page on the way to world select somewhere it sais DNS Request Not Processed-The server is undergoing maintenance.......... This would be acceptable, YET, when i chose a world it didnt start loading and i got the original page giving the same message : DNS Request Not Processed-The server is undergoing maintenance in blue words on a white page... So, ive gotten to website but cant get past world select..

I'm swiftly running out of ideas.

You may be able to get past the problem by using a different DNS server (see your ISP's website or search Google for public DNS servers).

Failing that you could try manually specifying the RuneScape server IPs in the hosts file. If that worked it would suggest a problem with your DNS server and if it failed it would indicate a software problem.

The hosts file is usually found in the following locations:

- Windows 95/98/Me c:\windows\hosts

- Windows NT/2000 c:\winnt\system32\drivers\etc\hosts

- Windows XP c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts

Note that "hosts" is the file name, not a directory. It has no extension and should be opened in Notepad.

An example of an addition would be:

65.39.250.68 http://www.runescape.com

This would be added directly under the default line which reads:

127.0.0.1 localhost

DNS Servers are specified in Window's networking settings under the TCP/IP properties of your connection. The method to get there changes depending on what version of Windows you use.

Remember to make a note of your network settings before changing them. If you specify invalid settings your internet will fail to work until you set them back again.

Failing both of these a HiJackThis log may be useful.

Damn, although you seem to very good with computers Collective, I dont understand half of what you say ;] However, the things i did try didnt work as i had wished (i couldnt open hostsin notepad... didnt know where to enter ip... couldnt find 127.0.0.1 localhost anywhere.....

By the way.... What is DNS? Can DNS somehow have been altered to block runescape?

And, once again(cuz i havent really gotten an answer to this lol), would it be possible to somehow block a website in c:\ for instance, and thus be able to unblock as well?????

Anyway... damn.

DNS is the Domain Name System. Put simply, it is the system that turns a name like http://www.runescape.com into an IP address like 65.39.250.68.

When you connect to a website using a hostname Windows automatically contacts whatever DNS server it has been told to use (either by you or your ISP) and asks it to give it a list of IP addresses for that host.

When you type http://www.runescape.com and Windows dutifully contacts your selected DNS server.

The problem you are having is that Windows is having trouble contacting your DNS server, and hence can't get an IP address for http://www.runescape.com, so Firefox doesn't get an IP address to connect to.

Windows has a file called the hosts file. It is usually stored in the locations I gave in my previous post and is the first place Windows looks for hostnames (before it contacts a DNS server). Usually it only has one entry but more can be easily added by editing the file in Notepad.

If you add the line "65.39.250.68

First off, i have Windows Xp. Maybe that will help you help me

Also, when i try typing the ip for runescape in the adress bar, and then press enter, yes i can get to runescape. HOWEVER, why then, if i have gone directly to runescape through the ip, does it still say on every runescape page "DNS request not processed.....blah blah" - and even when i select a world to play in, it goes to the white screen with the blue letters (which is what i originally get if I type http://www.runescape.com. If i bypass DNS which would find the ip, and simply type the ip, why is this still shown?

And also, the only person who could possibly block the wesbite is my brother (he isn't fond of runescape) - if I were to ask him if he blocked it, he would certainly not admit to it (if he did it). Therefore, is there some way i can personally unblock it if, hypothetically, he has blocked it? And also, if he blcoked it, why does his computer (which shares the same internet through a HUB) show the same result when you go to runescape.com ---this leads me to believe its JUST my internet connection?....

Some links on the RuneScape website point to different hostnames, e.g. hiscore-web.runescape.com, create-web.runescape.com. Each RuneScape server also has it's own hostname. When you click these links Firefox has to look up the IPs for these sites, but as the lookup fails you can't access them.

It will be difficult to figure out how to unblock something without knowing how it was blocked in the first place.

Really you need to try the suggestions in my previous two posts and give the results, unless others give different/better ideas.

I can't try the suggestions anymore than I already have... I don't understand most of it. For instance, i cant find anything in "hosts" where i can add the ip for runescape under 127.0.0.1 localhost (which i dont see..)
