You make a new image with a transparent background, then copy your image in it as a new layer, then delete whatever you want to be transparent with the help of the magic wand tool and save as gif.

thanks everyone for the sigs!

When you've got your image, with all the transparency done, go to file>save for web, you can save as gif or png but make sure the little transparency box is ticked. :P

GIF and PNG transparency is much different. GIF and PNG-8 transparency is only on/off. As in you cant use anti-aliasing or you get a "halo" around the text or image.

PNG-24 uses alpha layer transparency which means you can use full shadows and fading into full transparency with no halo

Good site explaining: http://homepage.ntlworld.com/bobosola/pngtest.htm

Nore that Internet expolorer does not currently support PNG-24 alpha transparency
