Tradtional and Gaming art

Before i start on main point of this topic, let me ask this ;

Do you prefer realistic or different style of art for Games? Example of different styles are Mario, japanese style, Rayman,

I was thinking "What happens when technology makes it easily to make games with VERY, VERY realistic graphics?". I also thought of Japanese anime art style of games. Inafune said that he fears that Japanese game market will disappear because it's done so much.

So what if in future technology make it easy to create realistic game art (so realistic that it's 0,1% away 100% real world movie recording). Would the situation become like Japanese games market? Would game developers go back to "old roots" or old graphics of Gaming (like paint artists in human history), and producers request these types of games for market reasons?

What do you think?

I usually don't like ultra-realistic graphics. The attention to detail for violent scenes (Example: CoD4/WaW stabbings and dog attacks) is unnerving enough as it is, especially since a lot of the other animations plunge headfirst into uncanny valley. It just kind of shows where their priorities are.

Plus, stylized or unrealistic graphics add character to the game. Team Fortress 2 wouldn't be nearly as unique if it didn't look like a deranged Pixar film, and part of the appeal of anime-style games is that if it's done well it seems like you're watching anime (Done poorly, and it's even more terrifying than a Western game of the same quality).

It just depends on the games and what kind of style they're going for, I think.

i dont look overly realistic graphics it detracts from the game often IMO as major realistic means everything has to be epic detail so things get lost and blur together. Where as even a quasi-relaistic style you can get nice lower detailed textures going on and give objects sharp edges so important details really pop out at you.

I like the kinda realism level used in games like Arkham Asylum, Assassin's Creed, Saboteur etc. Real enough to feel real; yet fake enough to not make everything become a blur of detail and lose important things.

I prefer graphics to be honest, but that doesn't mean I judge a game based off that. A good example I can think of this (at least for me) was Zelda The Wind Waker. The style of graphics done in that game are still some of my favorite in any game I've played, however they are not considered 'realistic'.

I would love for games to be made that are absolutely photorealistic, violence has never been an issue for me and I would love to have at least one game that is based around completely realistic gore. But as was pointed out earlier, there is also a big place for games like TF2 and the Mario games. In my opinion, it depends on the general mood the game is going for.

I prefer games that have that unrealistic edge to them, rather than play something that is based in the world as it is. This is because I play games as an escape, as I am sure a lot of people do. However, I think it depends on the genre of the game as to how realistic it should look, and I'm sure those kind of games do the level of detail justice.

I'm just not bothered about games looking ultra realistic and perfect. If a game is aiming to be realistic then I like it to somewhat look realistic - poorly made graphics can detract from a game worse than well made but not super-realistic ones. It's just the tone and mood that the game is going for which defines the art style. The mechanics of the game and theme should lead to an art style, whatever that's like. Games shouldn't be all about the graphics and making them better and better. We've reached the point now where graphics can't be improved by very much imo.
