A situation where installing one program stops another from working. (Answered)

Yes, this is for an assignment and yes, I'm allowed to ask on forums.

Just wondered if anyone can tell me of a situation where they've installed something and had a problem where there was a loss of service. I have a couple of examples already, just need one more >_<

An example of what I'm looking for:

Problem: Installed Norton Internet Security 2012 and it made Internet Explorer 9 unusable.

Solution: Checked Control Panel/Windows Update for any updates installed lately then uninstalled them, IE became usable.

I'll do everything else inbetween. Don't need any info on incompatibility problems though, I have already researched that.

solution: uninstall norton and never think of installing that horrible antivirus again

from there get yourself Avast or any other AV program for that matter.

this isn't what you want to hear i'm sure but Norton is a terrible program

If you quote me please be sure to note that I'm extremely mad.

Who in their right mind would get Norton? Not only is it one of the worst antiviruses, but it causes problems like the one you named.

Did either of you actually bother to read the OP?

@Star: At my work I deal with this kind of thing, more specifically when conflicting versions of DLL files cause certain application functionality to be lost. I can't think of any example off the top of my head though :(

Well not sure if you consider this incompatibility or loss of service, on this Dell Laptop:

Problem - Installing reasonably up to date graphics drivers from the GPU manufacturer rendered the Ethernet drivers inoperable

Solution- Rollbacked the GPU driver to re-enable Ethernet drivers.

Problem- Installed iTunes, Rendering the standard windows png viewer inaccessable due to quicktime (rendering the viewing of standalone PNGs from the internet unusable)

Solution - Researched the known issue and disabled Quicktime access to File type settings and manually repaired the incorrectly altered Registry values, following every update of quicktime, until Apple fixed the issue finally.

Didn't experience it personally, but I had to help a friend who had the issue:

Problem - Owner installed an outdated version of Adobe Photoshop (CS3), disabling all internet connectivity post reset.

Solution - Researched issue and discovered a known issue with the included version of Apple Bonjour, forcing manual removal of the on-link Default Gateway (0.0.0.0), and requiring installation of iTunes (which bundled with up to date versions of Bonjour) Microsoft Support page for said issue

That's exactly what I'm looking for Wyvern, thanks! You've been a huge help.

I did read the OP but usually when someones gives an example it's what's going on with them. Glad this got solved though as far as I can tell. Don't hesitate to ask more questions!
