Are there any expensive drops to make it worth a try?

It's not any single expensive drop, but a multitude of common but still expensive drops that makes them good (Palm, Papaya, Yew and Magic seeds, Torstol seeds).

 

And you should be doing Ganodermic beasts. but you have to mage them. I suggest getting yourself a Polypore staff from the GE first, much cheaper than any alternatives.

Go for ganodermic beasts safespotting. I'm still making 2-3m an hour and getting good effigies and spirit seeds.

 

Expect to kill around 70 per hour with the polypore staff and you may be averaging around 1k flakes, 3k spores, a good chance of a stick drop, and several expensive seed drops.

 

Safespotting at Ganodermic beasts is almost afk and you don't have to worry about slow spawnrates or other people taking your kills. Yes, it's worth a try.

You're a bit late, but the ganodermic beasts should still be decent money and effigies, if done properly. Use neem oil rather than trying to safespot, saves time.

I'm not sure about this, because:

 

1. the effect of reducing defense is not visible;

2. the beast may drop something good when you use it, waste time to pick up twice.
