24-hour limit on link posting?

Recommended Posts

Recently I've been on RuneHQ for a while, and noticed when I signed up, URL links are temporarily un-hyperlinked for the first 24 hours of registering.

I think this is a good way to counter the millions of spambots we get everyday.

I can definitely understand the benefits, but I really don't like inconveniencing "regular" new members. When I join other forums I find "new member posting restrictions" a real pain..

Earlier today we had kind of a one off where it took a while for a spammer to be banned, but I think usually we're very prompt with removing them.

Sonikku, this one must side with the Admins/Mods regarding this matter. Even 3 hours with an alert of temporary non-URL status for links might be overkill. Heck, this one has no idea how easy/hard it would be to implement a captcha to defeat spammers, but allow new users to bypass the time restriction if this kind of thing was put into effect. :-k

BTW, even if this were to happen, it would have to wait until the pending forum upgrade was done. It would be in the same heap as some other suggestions/notes that this one has made. :geek:

The flow of debate (what's left of it) on the OT board would be severely impeded by this, as would discussion on major breaking news stories where new information tends to come quite rapidly. Certainly, 24 hours would be too much not to cause harm.

Its a good suggestion. Fortunately our mod staff is in a position to catch and ban the bots in record breaking time. Why inconvenience honest users while we have a staff that can handle them. :)
