Some advice on using Abilities.

Featured Replies

I'm still kind of trying to get used to how things are now. I've been trying to mess around a bit to see what works best, but i really can't seem to figure it out.

When i'm killing something with high LP, like a boss, i'm unsure what the best way is to go about killing him. There are two options that i've been using:

1.) Pretty much ability spam, bet my adrenaline up, use ultimate, repeat.

2.) Time my abilities to "sync" with my normal weapon hits.

In option 1 i don't think i have a lot of auto-attacks because i'm spamming abilities. I have my bar setup in a way that allows me to use abilities non-stop without having to wait for one to cool down at any time.

In option 2 i basically have the same amount of auto-attacks as abilities. I've noticed that i hit quite well with the auto attacks too.

I just can't really figure out which way is the best way of doing it.

Also, if it matters, for KBD i usually use 2h weapons and for QBD/Zammy i use 1 Handed with a shield.

Since you're using 2h (I assume royal xbow or maul), then option one would give you 2 ability attacks per 3.6 seconds, while option two would give you 1 ability attack and 1 autoattack per 3.6 seconds (if you line them up well, I believe).

Abilities with average speed weapons only hit for up to 66% of your max hit.

I'm going to just guess some basic abilities that you use:

Punish (100%)

Slice (125%)

Smash (125%)

Cleave (125%)

Sever (188%)

Dismember (125% DoT)

For an ability to beat an autoattack, it needs to hit at least 150% (since its reduced to 66% of your autoattack max hit). So it would theoretically be better to use option 1 with Dismember and Sever, and use option two with your weaker basics.

In the case of 1 handed weapons (fastest speed) you could probably sync abilities with autoattacks much better, I believe it's 1 ability and 1 autoattack per 3 seconds, though all abilities are stronger than autoattacks in this case.

This doesn't account for adrenaline buildup, though, and anyway all the thresholds are much, much stronger than autoattacks. It'd probably be better to just cycle through abilities to get to threshold level and use them.

I think syncing abilities and autoattacks works much better for staffcasting, because magic spells seem to be able to slip in for free between abilities somehow.

Well if it changes anything for Magic 2h i use ABS, for Ranged i use Royal Crossbow, and for Melee 2H i use a Godsword/SS/ZS

put 4-5 basic, 3 threshold, 1-2 ultimate on action bar.

use basic to build up adrenaline, use threshold for most damage, use ultimate to show off.

use damage-over-time(Dot) ability first, e.g. dismember, fragmentation shot, combust

use combo ability next, e.g. fury, snipe;

use the least cool down ability whenever possible, time with auto-attack is fine. e.g. slice, piercing shot, tortrue

use threshold ability whenever possible, in the order of Dot -> Combo -> Others

do not stop circle between the abilities.

I'd usually put 3 Thresholds on he action bar, and 1 ultimate max, and I would very seldomly use it, Because the time it takes to cycle through all 3 thresholds is roughly about the same as their respective cooldowns, so you could almost never have to use ultimates.

I only ever use ultimates when my adrenaline bar is full, and my thresholds are nowhere insight, otherwise I'd not use it, It does very unimpressive damage for an ultimate (and some of them take a bloody long time for the damage to register, in some cases you'd be better just to spam abilities during that time...)

Didn't phrase this correctly - meant to say that when an ability calls for weapon damage, it takes 66% of your damage if using an average speed weapon and 80% of your damage if using a fast speed weapon. This is to account for different weapon speeds and bonuses so abilities have roughly the same dps across weapon speeds.

This was elucidated from testing on Lumbridge dummies.

Fury's also a horrible basic ability, and seems to max out for much less than the description would imply. In terms of adrenaline generation you'd never want to use a basic that takes so long to execute.

Yeah I'v found having three thresholds, one ulti for laughs and all the rest basics real effective. I spam to get my bar to just under 3/4 then alternate between a threshold and a basic ability, letting an AA slip in every now and then.
