Yea, but if yu have a phat at lvl 80, it shows yu are stong. Its The Same with Lvl 3s, if they have iron(lol), or a lot of money they strong, its just that as yu grow stronger th eprices grow stronger. Anyway I didnt understand yur last post and it had nothing releated to the topic.

Every trade or statement done is a manipulation of the price. When a highly renowned merchanter like Duke makes a statement on prices, this will of course have a larger impact on the economy, then if anybody else would do. I don't know if Duke is aware of that, but he should. (Actually i should say "you" because you'll not unlikely read this) So whatever you do, it is price manipulation, or better said price alteration.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Duke, you are one of the few people in this games, that are that legendary, that even i, as a fairly new player (started July 2005) know your name, wich is somehow aweinspiring, whenever i read it. (like the name 3 hit u for example)

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

That said i want to point out, that the price of phats can't raise exponentielly forever. (they would be in the billions by next year, not to speak of the year thereafter).

 

 

 

I feel, the higher the price rises, the more people will ask themselves, wether they really want to buy one or rather have enough gold pieces, to buy all the items they desire.

 

 

 

Then again this might not be so true, since still people who have that kind of ressources might just want to have this status symbol.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

The other thought is, that the higher prices rise, the less people will even start to raise that much gold. (why bother gathering 100m, when i can do as good as everything in the game with my 50m?) This is exactly the question i ask myself!

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

The higher the prices will rise, the more people will play the game as if there weren't any rares around, until (to postulate the extreme of the scenario) nobody buys them anymore at all. In that case phats wouldn't have any real value anymore, besides being not even expensive, but unaffordable expensive and would be ultimately untradeable. (nobody wants to trade for an item, that is extremly hard to sell)

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

This scenario could be fueled, by the increasing gap between the most expensive non rare item (wich is as far as i know dchain) and the phats. How many dchains can you buy for even a purple phat? 3? and for a blue? 8? phats just go more and more off scale.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Then again, over time players just accumulate incredible amounts of gold. when there is nothing left to buy, they'll go for rares.

While I understand your point, kelem ryu, price manipulation means that you are consciously trying to change prices to your advantage, oftenly based on rumors or lies. That's something totally different then giving your opinion with actual facts and reasons backing it up.

What people forget is that people can make tons of cash more then they used to be able to a year or two ago. Merchants, good stakers and runecrafters are making millions a day. But not only the top players are able to make more cash / hour, your average player joe is making a ton more then he used to be able to, thanks to barrows, various drag items, trail items and what not. I would be surprised if the comming year doesn't provide any new great money making oppurtunities.

Why would anyone want 8 drag chains though, they only go down in price more and more anyway. Rares, instead, only go up on the long-term.

It'll take a major event to turn rare prices down...won't happen any time soon.

i disagree. although i can see why discussing content would be more exciting to some people, publishing articles of this nature interest me greatly. i also like larger vocabularies with "big words" because i use tehm myself. duke freedom is not trying to manipulate prices (as he has said so himself at least once) i don't know what his goal was with this article, but i found it to be an excellent one both in terms of factual value and the discussions it has thus sparked.

about the price manipulation: i said, that any trade and any statement has a certain impact on the price, even the smallest. the bigger the trade and the higher the reknown of the person, that makes a statement about prices, the higher the impact. when the most famous merchanter of rs makes a statement about price development, the impact should be noticeable. i mean, when i see the duke is seling some mask sets, i can assume, that it can't be a terrible bad time to sell my red mask to...

if only the noobs had never complained about holiday drops, then theyd still be around and there wouldnt be an overinflated market soon to crash due to people who cant keep up with the raise. the prices increase faster than people can make money to buy them!!!!

lol i agree its hard to understand. i think he mans people "sell" phats for 10m, but he wants to know if he can sell it for the 190 mil (assuming he has\had one) i really think he is seeing price manipulatios or somthing "selling" for 10mil. either that or he has been playing for a looong time.

Hell am sure you can get a phat. It's not as hard as you think to make that kind of money:P

 

 

 

i have been playing for not even a year and i have no idea where tey get that kind of money. it may be easy for you, but i certainly dont seem to see how. wcing yews takes absolute ages and you only get 300 for every one you cut (if you are lucky) mining coal or iron is faster, but you don't up your smithing stat then. i guess merching b bones or somthing could get you the many millions, but it seemed to take ages on the days i try. it's probably easier on members server, though.

Ok first things first sorry Duke for giving you lip on the RS fourms a couple months ago, ya i still remmeber, but after losing over 4m i was just wondering what i ought buy discountingued wise from 4 to 5m, i am decided since my stats are only 1177 im going to be wooedcutting mining adn fishing rest of year but would like to have a rare that skyrockets. Actually, thats not totally true. Downwards price manipulation happens sometimes as well, though not as often and usually not as blatantly obviously as upward price manipulation.

After looking at those graphs, in hindsight, I'm glad I gave you my yellow and green for that blue ;P.

Nice article, I enjoyed reading it. I recently invested 90% of my money in a santa hat. Hopefully they will go up to like 9-10m, then i could get guthans. If they go down ill just hold on to it. Like you said, they should continue to rise. I hope!!! 8)
