WRITE FOR THE TIMES - SUBMIT A GUEST ARTICLE:

Remember, YOU can write an article for the Tip.It Times! You can apply to write full time, or just submit a "one-off" guest article any time you want! Our editors will work with you to ensure that your article is ready for publication. All guest articles can be submitted to @tripsis or any other Editorial Panel member. For more information, including details on how to apply full time, read this forum thread: http://forum.tip.it/topic/209138-how-to-write-for-the-tipit-times/

I'd like to remind people of the rules pertaining to Times threads:

[hide=Read these rules before posting in this thread]

Rampant flame wars have taken control of virtually every week's times discussion topics. The following guidelines must be followed when posting on this topic. Posts that ignore these guidelines will be removed.

1. You are invited and welcome to express like or dislike on articles and a particular author's writing style. It is not acceptable, however, to flame or personally insult an author. Posts that aren't anything but an attack will be removed from the topic.

2. Spelling and grammar errors can be reported to tripsis by PMing her and they will be fixed promptly. It is not necessary to post them on the discussion topic.

3. Off topic posts that do not discuss the content of that week's articles will be removed. This is not the place to discuss the direction of the times, how much you love or hate the times, etc. Off topic posts will be removed.

By keeping within these guidelines, Times discussion topics will mean more for the Panel and Administration than just a place for flame wars. Flame wars do not provide any useful feedback to the Times, which is mainly what we're aiming for with these topics: feedback.

This policy is effective as of now, November 17, 2010. Any posts prior to the creation of this policy may or may not be removed according to the new guidelines.

[/hide]

[hide=Submitting Crossword Puzzles]If you want to submit your own crossword puzzle, it's quite simple.

Simply provide a word list (about 10-20 words) with their corresponding clues. Then, message @The Floating Pen with the word list and it will eventually be published in the Tip.it Times![/hide]

When replying please make sure to clarify the article you are replying to! Thanks!

If you spot any typos or mistakes in an article then please PM them to @tripsis. :)

Enjoy the articles!

I usually find myself losing interest when I don't have a goal and a plan to achieve it. When I was going for 99 RC and Cooking I could play 8-10 hours a day and not get bored (while watching something on the side), but lately I pretty much just log in to do JoT, ports, farm runs and dailies.

It's one of many symptoms I described in the article...

You don't have a goal to aim for, so there's no work being done.

  • 4 weeks later...

I created an account merely to reply to this thread.
That together with the fact that I've wanted a tip.it-account for the last decade.

And yes! I found this article particularily interesting.
Even though I reached a total of zero level 99s since the dawn of our beloved game, I have reached other milestones (mostly economical).
I played Path of Exile for a good while (when the Evolution of Combat begged me to not play it)
- and Path of Exile indeed offers the end-game gameplay that RuneScape lacks.

If you manage to maintain your account into the level 80s in PoE, you start looking for maps (much like clues).
These maps offer teleportation into various death-traps with semi-random difficulty level; the greater the difficulty the higher chance of epic rewards.

Another thing that makes all that interesting is the fact that most weapons and armour in PoE has random stats, making the search for the "perfect stats" endless and worthwhile.
This also makes certain items totally unique. Little about RuneScape is unique - with the possible exception of colouring your completionist cape or clan cloak.

Still RuneScape have more "soul" to it than Path of Exile, and a higher sense of value when it comes to certain things.

I might have drifted off slightly. The conclusion is that I would probably combine my two favourite games, if it was up to me to redo things.
I would offer some sort of clue-like level-generating experience where you can end up in all kinds of environments (with higher environmental variation than dungeoneering).
Or just change the way clues work to be more Path of Exile-ish with the touch of RS-skilling. That would be like a combination of all mini-games in RuneScape I guess, where you can choose what to do.
Not an entirely bad idea to revive certain dead mini-games.

It is difficult to sit alone in a dark room and pretend that you have some sort of answer to things.
I guess my focus if I was a part of the team who re-created RuneScape would be to keep things simple and graphically beautiful while still offering a vast variation of expression and late-/endgame gameplay.
Not sure I said anything at all in that sentence.
Anyway, thanks for a good post.

I'm at the point where it is amusing to watch myself work so hard again - I have 13 skills all under 300K exp to 99 and intend nailing them all in a day. Fun, a target, but .......then what? Dung 120 leaves me cold, comp cape perhaps but I fear the "all 99+" point will see me drifting away from the game.

Yeah, one of the ideas for expanding dg was to put random minidungeon spawns around rs that would only appear/open if you had the key from something else (a drop from combat or skilling), and it'd appear like a sinkhole and drop you into a randomly generated resource dungeon with all sorts of stuff in it that you could actually take with you. Hell, I'd go for that instead of the clue scrolls we have now, and just put the casket at the end, but make it so that you can also collect something useful in there in case the casket sucks.
