http://www.bestpricecameras.com/215530-312322-1-0209B003AA-Canon-Eos-Digital-Rebel--XT-with-18-55mm-Lens-.html

(if that link doesnt work, Its the "Canon Digital Rebel XT - w/ 18-55mm)

Now.. this is the camera (possibly) that im going to be taking with me to Europe in Jan. 07'.. YAY.. im going.

I know this camera is good. but I want to know ... Do I have Alternatives that have better value?

Now, when I go to Europe, and sight-see and all that stuff I want a camera that can take AWSOME pictures that will impress people I show them too, and also for Art sake.. (Deviant Art) :)

Little far away I know.. Jan 07' but, when I say impress my friends, I mean some people who will being going to Europe with me, and some that stayed behind. So I was thinking of making a CD with pictures on it for each of them :) That way they never forget what we experienced in Europe. Now I like to please people, so thats why I want this camera to be a camera that will take impressive pictures.

-Lemme know what you have to say

-Thanks alot for the information, and other stuff in advance

I personally found that a smaller camera was easier to use in europe as it was less of a pain to lug around. Not to mention, in half the places you'll probably visit, picture taking is illegal. If you still wanted to take pictures there though (some do some don't, im not advocating either side), it would be a lot harder to do that secretly with a larger camera.

One downside with a smaller camera though, is it often means less megapixels + a higher price.

Thats all i can really add about the camera, as im realitively inexperience with them. One thing i'd suggest though, buy a extra battery for your camera and tons of extra photo cards (depending on how many megapixels your average picture is, and how many pictures you plan on taking (i took around 400), i'd suggest about 1 gig).

Well if you're going for a DSLR, I would definately go with the Rebel XT, it's like +/-$1,000, and if you get a lens or two if you can afford it, it's a great camera. We have a 35mm Rebel and I've used it and gotten the film converted to digital and it's awesome.

I was strongly considering buying the Rebel, but opted for a compact digital instead because I would rather have the camera on me all the time and not miss a photo opportunity rather than keep the Rebel (pretty big) around my neck only when I'm looking for a photo op.

But for totally impressive images, use the Rebel. I don't know of any inexpensive alternatives to it because SLRs are rather expensive, so the Rebel is at the lower price range.

What areas are illegal.. and WHY?!

Two places that quickly come to mind is westminster abby and the museum that holds michelangelo's famous David sculpture. There are a few other places too, like shakespeare's globe theatre, but im not sure if your going there.

Its illegal for a few reasons. For one, the various gallery's don't want you taking a really nice/professional picture of it and then turning around and making a few bucks off your images. Other places say that the flash harms the paintings. And at westminster abby, well the guy that runs it hates tourists (not kidding).

Its typically not too much of a problem. Only once was a member of our group throw out of a place (he forgot to turn of his flash, took a picture in the midde of the sistene chapel, and was subsequently caught). I was caught a few times, but hey, I came back with pictures everyone wanted :P .

something that will take good pictures, dont care about MP size maby around 4.5-8MP?.. as long as it takes good pics.. that look professional. Canon is my favorite brand.. I sometimes browse DeviantArt and look at my fav. pics and most are taked by cannon SLRS, and some Regular Digis'

Umm.. under $700 try.. if its a really a good deal $700-$800 (U.S.A. Dollars)

Another thing you'll want to realize is that the Digital Rebel will take several different sizes of pictures... unless you have a tripod you'll probably want it set on the smallest size (but with the 'Fine' quality). Even then pictures can come around at 1-3mb each when pulling them off the camera. By running them through photoshop (a version of elements should come with it) using the batch processor and setting them to JPG High Quality you should be able to get 3-500kb an image. That's just one thing you have to realize about having more mp, it just means it's easier to get a blurry shot :)

Nothing compared to the lense I have on it now.

When you buy a dSLR you really should budget for atleast one extra lens.

The lens choice depends on what kind of photos you plan on taking.... the lenes would/should greatly out-live the body so that is where the investment should be made. From my reading the estimated life-span of a dSLR is around 5-10 years. To get a decent dSLR with good glass and other add-ons, the cost sky rockets quickly.

A few other cameras worth looking at.

The Nikon D50, like all dSLR it is a good camera. It is slightly cheaper then the digital rebel. The 18-55 kit lens is quite nice, the other lens is not. The D50 is slightly better for wide angle then the Rebel, the rebel also has lower photo noise at high ISO.

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/control ... ype=search

The Olympus EVOLT E-500 is a nice camera, with lots of toys. It also has a 2X focal length conversion ratio so would favor tele photos... From what I read the kit lens are quite nice. The olympus has more image noise then the other dSLR.

The Konica Minolta Maxxum 5D, main claim to fame is the built in image stabilizer. So you do not have to buy expensive lenses with it built in.

The Pentax dSLR is the cheapest, nice view finder....

Another option is not to buy a dSLR but to buy the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-R1. It has comprehensive manual controls, noise level is comparable to the Olympus E-500. It has a very nice lens.... Costs more then many of the entry level dSLR.

Yup, I'm still using the lenses from a film Rebel (18-55mm and 75-300mm) and theres nothing wrong, quality parts :D (They're lenses from Canon)

What would be funny is if you paid a lot for one camera, but since you have no idea how to use it, you'll end up with some ugly pictures and you're out tons of cash.

Go to Europe and enjoy it with your friends, try not to brag too much... It's like you're compensating for something

But the photographer can. Even the best cameras can take crappy pictures if you don't know the basic rules for taking interesting, and fun pictures.

So, if you're going to buy the camera you like (it really is a great one), you should do some reading up on the basics of photography. Stuff as simple as the rule of thirds can make the pictures alot more interesting to look at. And since you have quite a while before you go, buy it and practice :o

I hope you have a great time in Europe with your friends 8)

Well if you're not totally set on a DSLR, I just bought a Sony Cyber-shot DSC-N1 digital camera. It's pretty amazing. Since I've taken a camera travelling, I can attest that it's somewhat tedious carrying around a big camera (such as the Rebel, which we have). This camera is great because it fits in my pocket, is 8.1 Megapixels, 3" touch screen, and it goes for less than $500 depending on where you get it. It's totally different than using an SLR, but the price is half that of a Digital Rebel, and it would be a lot easier to carry around in Europe.

I can also confirm this. The camera takes amazingly vivid pictures and is very easy to keep up with. After using the Rebel a lot I was very impressed when I saw the result of the pictures coming from the Cyber-shot.
