Autoing. When do you cross the line?

Lets start off by looking at the rule.

Rule 7.

Macroing

You must not attempt to use other programs (e.g. bots, macros or autominers) in conjunction with our games to give

yourself an unfair advantage at the game. You also may not circumvent any of our mechanisms designed to log out inactive users automatically.

Basically, what does that mean? You may not use any programs to play for you to give yourself an unfair advantage.

First thing I'd like to say, is that over all the boring tasks we do in Runescape (Cooking, Fletching, Fishing, Woodcutting, etc) we like to do other things. I personally, like to surf the web, the forums, watch m Sovies, listen to music, etc. Hell, sometime I get up, go upstairs, grab a bite to eat, come back and find myself logged out. This always happens to me when I use the washroom, go get something, help my brother with his pc, etc. One thing I found out is to stop this, stick a coin in your arrow key and it will keep you logged in!

I'd like to know if this is against the rules. I gain no advantage as for I am just standing there, spinning in circles, not autoing or anything. So would you cal sticking a coin in your arrow key an autoing program? Or how about some macro that lets you bypass their autolog out?

Let's leave it at that.

Second thing, is clicking. We all know that you can do the Alching trick where all you do is click right? Put the item your alching on the place where your alch button is? So say you removed your mouse ball right? Your mouse wouldnt move. You can grab your mouse, put it in your pocket or by your side and watch tv and just click twice every five seconds? Would that be considered autoing? Or macroing?

Take it further. What if you were to create a simple electric mechanism with a motor which slowly spins, with a special device on the shaft that made a little thing go up and down click your mouse for you? Sure we've gone far, but it wouldnt be hard to make. Would it be considered autoing and macroing? It isnt a program that plays for you... Its just a device which clicks for you lol.

So this all fits together under one question: Does it give an unfair advantage? Of course it does! But then again; what doesnt? Having a faster PC or faster clicking fingers give an unfair advantage, right? So why cant you do something like this?

Please note I've never autoe'd or macroed in my life, these only came to my head and I put alot of thought into them.

So what do you guys think? Have you ever thought about this?

Comments and opinions please :)

Please dont flame or spam :(

Jagex doesn't care what you do to your keyboard of mouse to keep yourself playing. The reason being is that they have absolutely no way of knowing what you are physicaly doing to your computer.

Although I would not suggesting doing any of those things. Not because it's against the rules or unfair, but because it is a stupid thing to do. Maybe you are a new player and you don't own too many valuable items, or haven't had that many random events, but they do tend to happen at the worst possible times.

Say you put a coin in your keyboard and go grab something to eat... It is very likely that you will get some sort of random event that will either kill you, or teleport you.

Becides, is it really that much of a hassle to just log out and log in once in a while?

*edit*

Interesting idea  While using a mechanical device to play technically isn't against the rules (and is impossible for Jagex to detect) I personally think that it kinda falls under "unethical" and as such do nothing like that. There is also the problem of actually being able to build such a device, mainly because it involves working to avoid work. In regards to the alch-ing trick, I have done the same thing for superheating steel bars and find nothing wrong with it.

Jagex has no way of knowing if you're doing something to you're computer, but if you create programs on the computer, they might detect it. That, I think, is when autoing gets to the banning point.

I doubt sticking your coin into the keyboard will get you banned.

The mouse thing is a great idea... too bad my mouse has that red light instead of a ball.... i could just carry it with me to the tv and i'm all set. The only problem is when a random event hits you, you won't be able to click since your mouse doesn't work :P heehee

The machine is kinda funny to me. If you do it, i doubt jagex would care, but i'd consider it autoing :D

Overall, I think that you wouldn't be considered autoing unless there's an actual program on your computer helping you / giving you an advantage in the game.

Just one more thing... Jagex should not be able to ban for actions being done over and over again in the same exact way without proof of a machine helping you. I back this up with the fact that a substitute i had for math could hit his elbow and draw perfect circles. Now, just put his hand on the mouse and if he kept making circles and clicking at the exact same points, that's not "helping you in the game" it's a skill that you have developed... I know that was kinda random and awkward...

your only allowed to use http://www.runescape.com,you can't use any programs to give you an unfair advantage at the game.

Could you please read the post before posting? This is exactly what hes NOT talking about. Moron...

I think these should all be perfectly legal. Unfortunately, if you develop a precise pattern, it would very much seem that you were using a program instead of playing normally. I've always wondered if I could utilise one of those dipping birds (http://www.backstreet.demon.co.uk/oddst ... igbird.jpg) to operate the keyboard or mouse for you, and I doubt its considered macroing. If the 'cheat' is external, it should be perfectly legitimate.

Glad to read all of your replies guys, make a great reply :)

As for random events, I may be 'new' to tip.it, just because I rarely post, I've been here for almost a year. I've put well over 110+ HOURS of cooking, literally, since Jan 22nd... I know that random events ONLY come when you click "Use fish with fire", once you start cooking you're good to go. You can stick a coin in there and go for a walk even... Just when you right click to bank you might get another.

When you choose an action, it will most likely give you a random. For example when you fish, when you click "Net Fishing Spot" or whatever, you will get the troll then rather then whilst your fishing.

About the whole 'lazer mouse' thing, I have the same one :P. Couldnt you just tape it, with some of the tape over hanging fo a quick-release for randoms? It's a good idea...

Making a simple device that would click for you would not be hard at all. I grew up playing with electronics, making my own little cars with flashing lights and stuff so I know what I'm doing, again the only problem would be timing.

Nice replies guys, keep em coming :)

[Edit]

Evanboy, I was looking for that pic for about an hour because I remember when Homer Simpson autoed while he was at work lmfao. Very nice job :)

You're allowed to surf the web while playing RuneScape.

From the Code of Conduct in the forums:

"Can I play the game and browse the Forums at the same time?

It is totally permissable to play RuneScape and be in the RuneScape Forums at the same time, it will not be counted as a Multiple Login and no action will be taken against your account because of it.

The only thing we would suggest is that you are careful about keeping an eye on your character whilst reading or posting to the Forums as monster attacks or random events can occur and your character may be killed because of it. As a general guide we would only advise you to be actively using both parts of our website when you are doing non-combat training and are in a 'safe' location."

It says the RS forums, but I bet looking here is allowed too.

I offen play sudoku or read my email or surf the net while doing combat training.

Another lower lvl says that i am cheating as I am sort of 'away from keyboard' doing other things.

I stick to the rules and i never cheat.

Just think he is kind of stupid if he really log off every single sec his eye is away for the rs screen.

Crossing the line you say?

People are always looking for 'easier ways' when a game is too hard or boaring. In my eyes, the suggested helpers are forbidden, because it are mostly those people who come complain when they get killed by randoms. Just play it like you should, and if you don't have fun don't play.

-Small comment, programs who don't help you in game, but help you make the game easier [i mean like world switchers, ss etc] should be allowed when they are safe.

Well they are called random events because they happen at random times. I have gotten a number of random events while continuing doing a certain task or after I was done doing a task.

You are free to do as you wish, it's just not something I would recommend for your sake (especially if you wear expensive items while away from the computer). There have been many many posts on this forum from angry people compalining that they have been killed by randoms while looking away from their computer for just 1 minute.

When I go and get a drink, I either click stats screen then invo so I have 2 minutes to run up and go get something. I make it back in time most times.

Im planning on over 30k Alches with my goal of 99 Fletching, so I think I might tape my mouse's lazer closed so it doesnt move and I can just sit back and click =D

Rofl I just found a VERY effective way to Alch.

Lift your mouse. Easy. Have it in the air, or slightly off the surface. Rest your wrist on your lap and let it hang down and click to alch.

It works great and doesnt move ^_^ Try it.
