Looks like a fun little toy to me! I've never tried one, but I know alot of people who have one.

I can't really tell you about any Canadian laws, but I know that here in the U.S., laws with those things really vary. Here where I live, you are allowed to ride them on the street like you would a bicycle. You just have to stay on the side of the road, and make sure you're in plain sight. If you're trying to find laws, you might want to look for something pretaining to your area.

Dont ride at night, wear safety gear.

I dont even know the laws, but I bet those are in it.

Dunno about the law =\ Maybe you gotta be over 10 to ride, and you msut have a STRONG helmet?

BTW don't those things have no brakes? And where'd you buy it from; how much?

In almost all countries the reason they are illegal to use on the road is because they're NOT in the law. The things you can use on the road have to be specified under a certain statute, and those scooters aren't included so you can't use them on public roads.

As for rules/laws, over here there are only a few rules but they cover basically everything:

1. No riding on pavement/sidewalk, possibilty of injuring bystander.

2. No riding on main roads. If you fall off when a car comes past you could possibly cause the driver to swerve or worse could happen.

3. No riding at night. Just the noise, nobody likes to be kept awake.

In regard to 2, you are allowed (as far as I know) to ride around your cul-de-sac or whatever. :)

Nice scooter anyway.

Im preaty sure they are legal on the roads cause you cnat drive them on side walks really (nore highways), but they are ment for the city. Thats all i know. Also the box says i have to be 16 to ride. Good thing my b-day was in january...

Oh, and i can prelong my license because of this. Why get a car when i got one of these

Just because they're illegal on sidewalks doesn't make them legal on roads, nor does what their box says or what 'people' say they're for. There are a plethora of devices like this which are only legal to use on private property, like segways for example.

The box can say all it wants, doesn't make it the law.

You can carry passengers/shopping in a car, a car can go faster, you don't get rained on, you don't have to refuel every half an hour, and finally it's legal?

:x my dad wante to surprise me when i got home by building it, but he couldnt figure out if the break system was right or not (the wheel kinda rubed up against the break, but i think it could still move well when it was started).

Also the manual said its not ment for public roads... ill do a bit more of reasearch, but i doubt a cop is gonna send me to jail for my ignorance.

Oh and btw, these things can go like a few hours without need of refuling, we road for about an hour on monday on my friends, and there was no visible change in the ammount of gas.

I know my friend had a scooter, its broken now but thats not the point. The point is he drove it around public roads quite a few times, and only once did a cop recommend he shouldn't ride on public roads. So i doubt anyone is give you serious trouble.

Just went online. Now this is sappoused to be from canada, and its a website for the saftey council of canada. This is what i found so far about them.

Motorized scooters represent a diverse and growing category. Those classified as Limited Speed Motorcycles (top speed of 70 km/h) may travel on roads with lower speed limits. Others with motor output over 100 watts are regulated as Restricted Use Motorcycles (RUMs) and may only be used off-road. RUMs include the motorized stand-up scooters sometimes used by children.

I am sure there is a law against it, but it probably isn't very enforced. You could probably ride down public roads (i don't mean in the middle of the road but like side walk) once in a while as long as you don't make it part of your daily commute if you know what i am saying.

These guys ride around roads ni the suburbs which are mildy used. Footpath and road, both. Perhaps there are different laws in NZ?

Bah I'd just ride in mildy sued roads as well. No court will convict you, worst would probably be juvy? Which is THAT VERY RARE.

I got a response back from city hall today for a bylaw about these things.

Apparently Mottorized scooters and Wheelchairs are placed under the "pedestrian (sp?)" catagory. Now this means i cna definitly go on side walks with it, but i dont want to go on side walks at 20 km/h. I think this would mean that im going to have to j-walk to go on the roads... and thats not really forced around here, so i dont think it will matter much. And i do not need a licence.
