issy2
Hi. Does anyone out there play chess? (yes ok, I'm an amatuer. Now please let's stop arguing about the rules.) Only if you know how to play chess-mail (chess by postal service) which take years. Literally! Hopefully on the forums it'll be quicker than that! Choose red/black. On most modern chess sets, black is black/brown and red is white/silver/glass. White/Red Team starts, post your movement. Black/Brown Team posts movement. Feel free to post corrections to rules, just constructively. Rules: 1. The King cannot be captured. 2. If you get a pawn to the end of the board, you may swap it for a captured queen, knight, rook, or bishop. 3. A pawn can move two places on it's first go, but only 1 on all the next. 4. A Pawn cannot move backwards, only forwards. 5. A Prawn (I honestly used to call 'em that) has only one exception to not moving forwards. That's when the Pawn can take a piece forward-diagonally. 6. The Queen can move in any direction for any number of spaces without jumping over any pieces. 7. No piece can jump over another except the Knight and rooks/kings during castling. I like black... Who wants to be red? 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 (X axis co-ordinate first, please) 1/ / / / / / / / 2/ / / / / / / / 3/ / / / / / / / 4/ / / / / / / / 5/ / / / / / / / 6/ / / / / / / / 7/ / / / / / / / 8/ / / / / / / / (Y axis, Second Co-or dinate In Move- ment) Post top number (X axis) movement first, then Y axis co-ordinate. Anesthesia
Choose red/black. On most modern chess sets, black is black/brown and red is white/silver/glass. What on earth are you talking about? It's always been black v. white. It's not as though it's traditionally red but only recently it has been changed to white... 2. The only piece that can be recovered is the Queen, but only if a pawn reaches the other side of the board. Not true, should the player wish they can choose to promote the pawn to a knight, bishop or rook instead. 7. No piece can jump over another except the Knight. What about castling? Some people are changed by being a moderator. I wouldn't be.
Pete_the_Viscous
Castling can only be done when there's nothing in the way, and when none of the squares through which the king* moves are threatened by anything. *but not the rook. deviantart account
Anesthesia
Castling can be done when there's a line of pawns in their initial positions, hence the rook has to jump over the king. Some people are changed by being a moderator. I wouldn't be.
Pete_the_Viscous
Yeah, the rook does jump over the king. Didn't think of it like that, because they move at the same time. deviantart account
apinagez
and when none of the squares through which the king moves are threatened by anything. Pete_the_Viscous
Well, obviously. I was trying (incorrectly, it seems) to suggest that the rook doesn't jump over any pieces, when in fact it does: the other piece involved. deviantart account
GREEN_ROCKER
isnt this suppost to be about a game of chess, not a debate about the rules of chess? rsn = j a m e s(2 spaces)n
Anesthesia
isnt this suppost to be about a game of chess, not a debate about the rules of chess? Sorry sir. It's rare that a mildly intellectual discussion gets started; why attempt to staunch the flow of knowledge. Some people are changed by being a moderator. I wouldn't be. andyrules89
keep in mind, you cant castle if the king has been moved previously, same with the rook... Sorry about fueling this discussion... but does en passant only apply for the 2 center pawns? dude i got pked and lost my full zezima
indy500fan
isnt this suppost to be about a game of chess, not a debate about the rules of chess? this is the wrong section for forum games, so their discussion is the only thing keeping it from being locked. and its not bad to discuss the rules, when the rules you gave are wrong. Anesthesia
I believe en passant applies to all the pawns. To me it seems like the off-side rule in football; in a game with someone who isn't too familiar with chess, when you invoke en passant it looks like a rule you just made up on the spot... pedm
Castling can only be done when there's nothing in the way, and when none of the squares through which the king* moves are threatened by anything. *but not the rook. Yeah. Also, the king can't castle if it is in check already, not just any of the spaces it will be traveling over. I'm also pretty sure that all pawns can em passant. Issy2, I suggest that you go to some site online and play chess there in real time rather than email moves back and forth. Here: http://www.freechess.org/ or here: http://www.instantchess.com/ (I recomend the first one because there you can choose the level of your opponent- you do need to register however) PDM PDM

Heh, I've been in that situation too many times :( . Yahoo Games and US Chess Live is where I play most of my online chess.
unknownmasterofnothing
I play at redhotpawn.com, which is kinda like chess in emails. I like making a few moves a day and really thinking about it.
