You can't get approved with no history? That's quite strange indeed.
What did you apply for? Get a credit card with the same bank you have your current account with. They wont refuse you so long as you have a regular income. Then make a few big-ish purchases, car insurance, some clothes etc and make sure you pay it off within the first month. Why would you pay rent on credit anyway? Would be like paying it off twice

Do what Merc said, except I would reccommend taking either 2 or 3 months to pay it off. That shows the bank and other credit companies that you are capable of making multiple smaller payments on a bigger purchase - which is what they look for especially for loans and such.

i got my credit card about a year ago, and have not had any interest charged on me yet. i always pay it all off. i started out with a credit line of $500, it went up to $900 a while ago and is now at $1500. as long as you are making minimum payments on time it doesnt matter if you pay it all or just part. i also got approved for a $9500 car loan 2 months ago, so its pretty much just if you can make the payments or not.

:? Thanks. It's like this, I've been denied for every single card I've applied for.

I don't exactly have a year to build up credit either. I'll need to take out some hella loans for school come October. That 2-3 month thing may work out though. Lataa.

i definently wouldnt use a credit card for school, just try and get a student loan.

EDIT: about my previous post: i just remembered my parents cosigned my car loan. i may not have had good enough credit to get the loan by myself. then again, some places do advertise that they will give you credit no matter what if you have a job, so i may have had good enough.

Do not do this. You need to match the 'length of the loan' to the right 'loan option'. For example, you don't pay your house off on a credit card, because a house is a long length of loan and credit cards are only for short term payments; credit cards as a result are a bad option for house loans.

School loans are medium to long in payment length, so you are better off getting a term loan; I don't know where you live but you should check with your [prospective] university for payment options as they are always willing to help (more students, more money), they may even offer loans which suit your needs.

Bad as this sounds, go to a department store (Macys, Sears, etc.) and apply for one of their credit cards. More times than not they will approve you with no credit, you buy stuff at the store with it and pay it all off on time, and then you get some credit at least. Also, having a car loan and paying it off on time gives you good credit as well. It takes time, but soon you can get real credit cards and whatnot.

If you have been denied for everywhere you have tried, including your current bank account place then theres obviously a reason why noone wants to give you credit. Perhaps you have an irregular income or run close to the red quite often

Just a note, but if it's entirely for school loans and you're in the USA...Direct Loans, Pell Grants and government loans are entirely need based. I have no credit history either and was able to get more than was required.

The only condition of these are they are time limited, you must complete your schooling in X amount of hours (failing and such hurt alot). These are an excellent way to build credit, they defer payment for hardships and advanced schooling and will work around your income.

Also, since they're usually government oriented, they report to all three credit bureau's so as long as you make your monthly payment to them you will be setting yourself up for a high score.

You can usually organize them through your university, so be sure and ask the financial aid dept. They're ALOT lower interest than most bank loans and less hassle than a cc as well.

Get a job then. No one will give you credit if there is a big risk you cant pay it off.

Right. And that's a good method if you are using your credit card regularly. I should have specified that I meant to take a couple months to pay it off if you aren't using it regularly to show you're capable of making regular payments. Say, you only buy one big thing a year and you pay it off the month you buy it. That doesn't show you're capable of making multiple payments.

I should have been more specific. :P

I do have a job. I make [cabbage] money and I am totally happy with it. Investments require time and risk and I'd rather sit back and have a few beers rather than watch the stock markets or [bleep] around with finanical institutions. Unless of course you're buying bonds in which case you just sit around for 10 years and forget about it (usually.)

I save about 1.5K/month and I just stick it in a savings account. =/
