Age of Conan

I have been getting more and more into this game ever since I heard it was comming out. (Slanted for Q4 2006).

Anyways, what is age of conan? Well, it's an MMO set around the books. It's a gritty world, where there is no chivalry, and there isn't any safe places to be. More so, it is very action oreinted, and is being made by funcom (the makers of Anarchy Online).

So, a few quotes explaining some of the (real freaking cool) aspects of the game:

Does the game have single player elements?

- Jan 03, 2006

The first sections of the game will be played just like a single player title as you develop your character through an involving storyline, as you prepare for even greater adventures beyond.

The whole game will always be played on online game servers.

Basicly said, the first part of the game will be an engaging single player story line, and then the actual 'meat' of the game will be an MMO.

How true to the original writings of Howard are you intending to be?

- Jan 18, 2006

The world that Howard created was a dark and gritty place and we certainly aim to very true to that feeling and atmosphere.

Obviously Howard wrote the original works in the 1930̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢s, a long time before world war two, Martin Luther King or the 60̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢s sexual revolution, and some of his themes and characters are very much creations of their time that do occasionally jar our modern sensibilities, so Age of Conan will not be done in a tasteless, exploitative manner. Rest assured however that the world of Conan will never, ever, be politically correct and we hope that the game will capture all the elements of Howard̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢s creation that make it what it is!

They are saying that the world of conan is a dark one, and they aren't going to make this all cute and nice. It's a gritty world, and the game makes it out to be one.

What about Siege Combat?

- Jan 18, 2006

As a player you can cooperate with other players in building cities, with walls, towers and keeps, protecting softer targets like houses, inns and merchants.

In the same regions you will have the forces of evil like the Picts not only building their own city, like a real-life Real Time Strategy AI, but with the ability to mount sieges against your city. With ample warning you must return home to protect the walls of your city against enemy catapults and hordes of monsters swarming through the breaches.

Yes, the only true way to combat this oncoming evil is to gang up with your friends and take the battle to their walls. Lay siege to their towers, blow them up and see the vermin scream for mercy when your catapults sing their merry song of death and destruction. Naturally, mercy is unheard of in the Hyborian time. A swift death would be the extent of friendliness offered by (or to) your foes. Massive battles hide almost any form of cruelty or chivalry.

sieges! Even better, you can actualy build castles and citys while the enemy builds theres (in real time). At any moment the enemy (or you) could strike.

Is the game turn based or real-time?

- Jan 18, 2006

The gameplay will be very action orientated, and while you will find the standard RPG skill sets in there, from thieves with nimble fingers to pick the stoutest locks to Demonologists torturing the souls of their enemies, the system itself will be very much based around fast reaction gaming.

With our unique control systems though we hope that players of all skill levels will be able to dive right into the meat of the combat and allow them to wade into the field of battle, alongside the gaming veterans who will be able to take our combat system and make it their own!

The game uses a new engine geared towards a faster paced game. Basicly if you have a sword, where you swing with your mouse is where you will swing with your sword.

Also, the game is slanted to have PvP (no real details about it yet though.) Overall, it's looking great.

a few screenshots of the game:

Anyways, i'm planning on getting it on release (unless it somehow turns out bad. Realy doubt it though). I'll actually have an MMO where I can get the jump on things.

Also, another cool note, magic. Magic in conan's world is much more dangerous. For example, your spell could backfire on you depending on how powerful you try to weave your spell (weaving spells: you can bassicly add on effects into the spell, more damage, debuffs, ect. But at the price of a longer, harder cast and much more chance of failing against you.)

So, has anyone else been keeping up with this game? :)

Wow. Looks great!!! I'd like to see some specs though. :D

heh I didn't notice any specs on the main site (you mean like what kind of PC to run it?). If its something else tell me lol.

Yeah. Like what kinda PC, and system requirements and stuff. :D It still looks like a great game. I'd love to play it.

The graphics eeriely resemble those 3D images Jagex makes...

The Enrichment Center reminds you that the weighted companion cube will never threaten to stab you and, in fact, cannot speak.

In the event that the weighted companion cube does speak, the Enrichment Center urges you to disregard its advice.

looks cool, but it need to loosen on the testosterone.

This game could do some with catch phrase in a Hungarian accent like....

"I'll be back"

"Stick around"

"Give pancakes to whoever know where those catch phrase come from"

You know, if everyone made an MMO/MMORPG thread like this, with this detail, thought and care, the forums would be a better place.

Nice one, Nad! You've wetted my appetite for this game! :)

it looks really nice. the only thing wrong with these types of games is their controls... they usually tend to use wasd/arrows only, not arrows + mouse. so its really annoying to have to keep turning to move a certain way and to adjust your camera. but mabye they use mouse + movement keys.

the age of conan.

happiehour.jpeg

Actually the games that use the wasd movement keys are really simple. I've played Everquest II and Oblivion with those and it's not hard at all. I've also played Shadowbane which uses the mouse for movement and camera position, and it's easier if you're planning on dragging a bunch of afks with you...

are those games only wasd and nothing else? using wasd is easy, but only using them and nothing else is annoying.

 .

Im sure it will use WSAD and a mouse, like more of the mmorpg's. I'm not realy sure how it's going to work yet though.

Thought i'd give another update for those wizard fans on TIF :).

This week we take a look at the dark and arcane arts that are part of the magic system in Age of Conan, and in particular our unqiue spellweaving system!

Magic and Spellweaving

In Age of Conan we wanted the magic to reflect the world in which the game is based. Dealing with the arcane arts and siphoning the power of ancient gods is not something to be taken lightly. Just like our melee system, our magic system will also call upon the skills of the player. The player learning to balance their lust for powerful affects with the dangers that calling upon such extraordinary magic incurs.

There will of course be a number of simple and straightforward spells that casters can call upon, as you would see in other games. These though are merely the common incantations and curses that every young acolyte is taught, mere parlour tricks compared to what is possible with the magic in Age of Conan! Whilst useful in and of themselves the basic spells are merely the prelude to the true power that can be channelled ̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Ãâ channelled through the art of spellweaving.

Our spellweaving system calls upon the caster to effectively weave an intricate series of incantations and spells into one final spell that can be unleashed to smite their enemies or aid their allies. It could be as short as weaving two simple spells together to boost their effect through to the fine art of combining up to twenty spells into a devastating blend of mystical power.

So how does it work?

The player will start the spellweave by activating their spellweave ability. This places them in a trance-like state where they cannot move and the only actions they are allowed to perform is adding more components to the weave.

Once in the spellweave the player can add as many spells into the weave as they can manage or want to. The maximum number of spells that can be called into a weave is dependant on the players level.

Then once the elements are all added they can end the weave by deactivating the ability and the weave will fire off at its target as the caster leaves the trance and is free to move around again.

The spellweaving system allows for some truly awe-inspiring effects to be invoked. This allows the caster to tailor a specific incantation best suited to their current target. Whether it is combining debuffs or enhancing your damage, or even a combination of the two - the spellweaving system will allow casters to adapt their strategies to the situation at hand!

The depth of the system lies in figuring out the best combinations for the weaves and how best to avoid the darker side of Hyborian magic, because spellweaving does not come without risk!

Dark and Dangerous: Ill-effects and magical burden

Using the ancient magic̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢s of the gods is far from a trivial matter, and spellweaving opens up the caster to the dangerous elements that dabbling in such arcane arts invariably attracts.

Spellweaving is almost a balancing act. How much power can you summon forth without incurring some ancient curse or other mysterious ailment?

When a caster performs a spellweave there is a chance that they will suffer ill-effects from the process.

The risk of this depends on how powerful a weave they are performing based upon the power of the spells they are trying to combine and their level. Stray too far beyond what you are capable of and you will run the risk of incurring one of these side-effects!

The weave is not an exact science and even the mana cost of the weave will vary from that of its base components and whilst the system even allows for a caster to use more mana then they have, a heavy price might be paid for delving too deeply beyond those magical reserves.

The other element to spellweaving is a characters magical burden, every time a weave is performed they incur a magical burden, a dept as it were that weighs upon them. If too many weaves are attempted consecutively, or they attempt a weave that pushes their limits the burden will increase their chances of incurring ill-effects on the next weave. This burden naturally decays when a caster is not in a spellweave

Developing Magic

We really think that the spellweaving system will provide players with a unique system that allows for a wonderfully diverse set of tactics to be used. We wanted to go beyond the standard ̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ãâ¹Ãâchoose the right spell̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢ or ̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ãâ¹Ãârock, scissors, stone̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢ approach to spell casting. At the same time try we also wanted to create something that is truly in keeping with the style of magic portrayed by Robert E Howard where magic was dark, dangerous and an art many tried but few mastered!

We hope that with this system players will really be able to tread that dark line between the quest for power and the risk of insanity or worse!

Good read on the spellcasting system :) .

Hmm... I'm thinking of making a post soon like this, but with all of the MMO's i've come into encounter with. (both ones I like and dislike). Hopefully something that 'maybe' maybe will drive away the "o noes, what MMO should I play!"

Well, that last parts a dream mostly, but the post might happen.

I am geussing magic will be dead difficult to train but it makes you superman or wonderwoman when you have a decent Level at it?

looks rather complicated.

It is werid that the "theif" class can't steal anything

they should change it to barbarian ninja (?!)

Looks pretty cool. Sort of like a runescape with more involvment other than just clicking.

its sad though, because games like these never end up with the population of WoW or rs or whatever else.

I'm pretty sure this game is going to take advantage of DX10. Not to say Vista exclusive, just that it will look better under DX10. They wouldn't be stupid as to make it DX10 only, especially with an untested MMORPG where their sole purpose is to reach a wide audience.

This, however, will probably give you some idea as to what sort of DX9 capable computer you'll want...Very, very good, I'm expecting. (my guess: 1gb RAM minimum, 2gb recommended...a very capable modern processor (since Ghz don't mean much anymore, I won't even try to guess), and a current generation graphics card).

I mean, look at the screens, and then imagine that as an MMO...Even on min specs that will take a very good computer.

oh yeah, I'm almost positive that it's going to take a decent rig to run.

Personaly can't wait for DX10 to be out :)
