My budget is about ̢̢̮ââ¬Ã¡Ãâì900. I already have a case, monitor, mouse, keyboard and speakers. It'll basically have to last me about 3-4 years. The only real demand I have is being able to play Spore, other than that no real heavy duty gaming. However, one of my courses does involve digital video editing so I'd like to know if this setup is suitable for that:

Motherboard: ASUS A8N-VM-CSM, s939

Processor: AMD Athlon 64 3800+

Hard drive: Western Digital 320 GB 7200rpm SATA300, 16MB

RAM: 2x 1024mb

Video card: ASUS EN7900GT/2DHT, 256MB

I don't know the specs for Spore (never heard of it :? ), but my A64 3000+ and 6800GS (256mb AGP) handle Half Life 2 on high just fine. So, assuming it's the same graphics quality or lower end, that rig should eat it alive.

I don't know alot about video editing, but 2gb ram should be enough to get the job done. If that doesn't do the job, you can always toss another stick in to speed things along.

that wil handle most everything that you will have to do, you have 2gb ram and A 256mb Video card, that's plenty for most things, only if your going to be doing intense graphics-all-the-way-up gaming will you run into problems

Why go for s939? It generally cost more than the same socket AM2. The only disadvantage is that the memory controller is not on-die, but the DDR2 memory is fast enough, it just about equalizes the RAM speed.

Man, looks nice so far. I cannot wait until Spore comes out! :P

Ghost: I am prejudice towards ignorance, so that would explain why I appear to be so.

The socket 939 is a whole $2 more than the AM2. Comparison at Newegg. AMD will also be continuing production of 2 939 chips for a while, so there's still an upgrade path, if needed at all. Most people build an entire new rig when a processor becomes obsolete anyway because of other bottle necks. Also, if you do a bit of digging, DDR2 doesn't boost the AM2 chips performance much at the moment.

Unfortunately, the added memory bandwidth did not translate into the kinds of increases in real-world gaming performance that many might expect. Gaming Performance at DDR2-800 3-3-3 at the same CPU speed increased 1% to 6.7% in our tests - with all except Call of Duty 2 in the 1% to 4% range.

Socket 939 X2 prices will be cut on July 24th too.

Oh, and the memory controller is still on die.

AMD̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢s new socket AM2 processors now have an integrated DDR2 memory controller that operates at specified speeds of DDR2-667 and DDR2-800.

Doing a little research before posting would help you out a bit. :?

Sorry then, just assumed it because it's not in sync with the FSB like the usual on-die ones were. Oh well. Good call then, Cruiser.

By equalizes, I meant it gave about the same performance.
