What do you expect to see in a good forum?

Featured Replies

Ok, I created an online community. I haven't got any member's yet, but I've started advertising. Yet I figure I'll ask ya'll this. What do you expect to see, or like to see in a community?

Lol. I understand on the mods. I hate when mods abuse their power too. I've had it happen, and I've seen it happen before too. I also understand on the filter, sometimes in the heat of the moment stuff happens.

Something that has people actualy there.

I'm sorry, but honestly you need to be a fairly big name these days to get a popular forums going on.

A good graphics section and a good off-topic section.

A good reason for it existing in the first place.

And something that makes people want to come back.

On a decent host with good reliability. People will give up on your site if it is down a lot.

Not hosted for free, this gives a really sense that you dont care about your community. And if you dont care then neither will the users.

None or minimal unintrusive advertising. When you first start your forum have no adverts. Let your forum get a little active before you even think about trying to make any money off it.

No popups/unders/spyware. This is a given really but so often i see poorly made sites just spammed full of adverts. Really doesnt give a good message

Customised design, or at least a modified design. Make it relevant to your content. I see loads of Runescape forums with random "futuristic" templates downloaded off the net and they just dont look right. As well as being used by hundreds of other forums it doesnt fit the theme either.

Thats the technical aspects. The others are the same as Rick said but i will expand a few more points...

Should not be a forum for the sake of being a forum, It has to have purpose. Whats the aim?

Should not be a general "off topic" forum. They alreadyt exist en masse and are much better executed and active than yours ever will.

Administrators and moderators with experience not just made because they are your friends. Making people mods and admins who dont have the skills can result in some pretty nasty outcomes.

Unfortunatly ive just seen your website which you advertised here.

You have made some crucial errors in setting uo your site.

You have it hosted for free, so you have no control over the base of your site.

You have it hosted on InvisionFree which is very unreliable.

You have adverts on your site which has only just started (4 members)

You do not have your own memorable domain name.

You have used a generic template

You have made an "off topic" forum

I can say quite clearly that your forum is going to fail.

Like already said the main thing a forum needs to have is content and a good number of users.... With these two things even a horribly designed forum would be able to out compete much better ones.

One site which has a horrible forum (in my eyes) is dpreview.com, but the site provides excellent content. The forum is flourishing despite its annoying format. (I can understand why they use the chosen format but I still find it annoying to navigate).

A good free forum software package to use is http://www.simplemachines.org

Advertisements in moderation are not a major problem. Most people can ignore them by now. Using a free service is fine to start with. There is not much point to spend serious money on a forum which is likely to fail. I have seen massive forums using free hosting plans.

If you want a good forum, this is what you should do. Find a niche which had not be fulled by another forum/forums (being interested in that niche also helps). Then create a site around that topic. People who want info on that topic would visit there to get advice. With a lot of luck a community would develop, which would feed upon itself.
