Hello, now, us American's do not know much about football. But everyday around 3 o clock my time, there has been a soccer game on titled at the top:

 

 

 

UEFA Champions League Matchday 1

 

Right now it's Manchester United vs. Celtic.

 

 

 

Can somebody explain what this is? I looked on the web site and it says legs (which I take are each half) and they are played on different days??? Use links to uefa.com so you can show me this. So there are rounds which last from now until May if I'm correct? And is this a league, or a championship between all of Europe?

It's a bit more complicated than that. There are two leagues hosted by the UEFA. The Champions League is basically a competition between the best teams of the various European national leagues. How many teams from each country participate depends on the country's position in the UEFA rankings. X teams either qualify directly, or for the qualification matches.

 

 

 

There are several qualification rounds, in which teams play two matches against each other, and the highest combined score wins. In case of a draw, the team with the most goals scored during the away match wins. The winners of the qualification rounds join the teams that have qualified directly in a group round in which each team plays the other three teams in a home and away match. The first two teams of each group qualify for the final rounds, while the third go on to play in the secondary league, the UEFA cup.

 

 

 

In the group rounds the teams play elimination matches the same way qualification matches are played, home and away. Only the finals are a single match.

The Champions league is essentially the domestic version of the World Cup. Well certainly for European football.

 

 

 

The winners from the top flight in the various european leagues get placed into groups.

 

 

 

Various leagues in Europe have more automatic qualification positions.

 

For example the English (premier) league gets 2 automatic positions and 2 qualification positions.

 

If you compare this to the Scottish league, the winner of the league still has to qualify.

 

 

 

Oh and btw come one United 3-2 at the time of this post.

Not straight away. In the group, they get 1 point each. If it's the knockout stage, over 2 games played home and away, the team who scored more away goals will go through. If that's still equal, they have a penalty shootout.

I have a good feeling about this year as well. Kuyt looked brilliant, him and Bellamy were working pretty well together. I didn't agree with Raffa's subs or team choice really, but I understand he wanted people rested for Chelsea. I think had Gerrard started (his late chance sooo deserved to be a goal) and if Zendon had been benched (he was terrible) we would have won.

He's still trying to find his best league team and European team. We play very differently in the competitions. I reckon we could go from Jan onwards undefeated, looking at our fixtures.

 

 

 

Hehe, I got my XXXL long sleeve home top today, with Crouch on the back :D Moving to London on Saturday, near Chelsea, just in time for the game!

W00t for Andriy Shevchenko for his first goal for Chelsea, there are more where that came from :mrgreen: He is my idol! And what i gotta say about Real Madrid vs Lyon, omg, they lost 3-0 last year and this year 2-0 common Real, just because you lost Zidane, and you do not have Ronaldo anymore doesnt mean you have to suck, they still got a strong offense and defense, but they just sucked that match. :roll: UEFA is a bit more interesting than World Cup, more goals per match + the mix of players in a team, it is just amazing. But i am dissapointed in Milan for selling Shevchenko, i was going with Milan to win this year, but i guess i want Chelsea to do the same thing.
