A runescape roleplaying server ?

I was wondering (and I searched to see if this Idea hasn't been presented before) about the possibilities of a roleplaying server.

Eh, why ? And what would be the difference ? :-k

In my opinion, an RPG such as Runescape is different than other games, because, with a little imagination, you can actually stand in your characters shoe's and live a life in world of Runescape. Just playing the game with a nice atmosphere (It kinda sounds like I'm a freak now, I'm not  ) but that good atmosphere is being disturbed by 90% of the players with a name by the formula ". For example "Legolas883, Flame33384 etc.". These people also seem to be unable to follow the basic laws of English grammar and spelling: "omg noob", "4u, r u, etc."

Can't there be one runescape server which has +- the following rules ?

[*]All conversation have to happen in normal english(on the english roleplaying server, if the idea is popular, other countries could follow) (with "artistic freedom" ofcourse), and the style has to match a bit with the general style of runescape. Originality is encouraged. Examples :

Instead of

"sell hides 4 100ea"

"Get y'er cowhides ! Only 100gp each !"

"hey can u cut my saph"

"Hello there, I was wondering if you could cut my sapphire ?"

(Also, why can't you capitalize the "I" further in a sentence ? )

If someone makes minor spelling errors, that's ok. It's just not ok make errors on purpose.

[*]Names have to be in line with the general (semi-medievil) atmosphere ; so no "Cyberpunk233" etc.

[*]Discussion is ofcourse possible, a real society isn't always peaceful, but in general "stupid" fights will not be allowed. Also the use of such words as "noob" etc.

"Oh my god, you noob, that's my rock ! "

The importance of politeness would be stressed more on this server than on the regular ones.

Ok, but .. who would monitor this all ? The moderators are already busy enough ! :-k

Well, I think that there are a whole lot of people who have similar views on the naming, talking etc. rapidly degenerating on runescape, and who would be delighted to take on a role of a moderator on this new server.

There would also be an other "reporting" than the normal reporting option, a kind of "OOT (out of character) report" where you can report people that haven't done anything illegal like scamming, but who are breaking the rules of the roleplaying server.

It's just a wild idea that I felt like writing down, what do you think ?

Ok great, so you have a new "Roleplaying" server. Now police it.

All reports would be opinion based, each person has a different line to draw under "acceptable" english.

I would like a few more people to speak properly though <.<

Well yeah, but now everyone also has different opinions on "acceptable behaviour" in Runescape. There are much reports made, which in the eyes of other players don't deserve reports. Eventually, everything is a bit opinion based, except some hard zero-tolerance rules.

I don't like that idea... it would slow the selling/buying process a lot if we always need to write "i'm buying cowhides 100 gp each please not less than 1k" instead of "buy 1k hides 100 ea" I know that's not proper language, it doesn't looks or sounds great, but its a lot faster to type when you are in crowded worlds and you want people to read you on the yellow sea of letters... Just don't use it always, only with needed, and it would be fine :-k

Well, but you wouldn't always have to use the rp'ing server. If you just feel the need to make lots of money in a short period of time, you're free to use the other servers. A rp'ing server isn't to make money, it's to roleplay

u said it isn't there to make money, but in your example the guy is obviously trying to make money. How would u enforce people going on the server? I mean, its the internet, what do u expect? If people want to be idiots like that, its fine, but i'll shorten down words and such, everyone does...

Well ok, I may have formulated it a bit wrong ;

I meant that it isn't to make lots of money fast, the situation in which you would use shortcuts.

If you'd want to just make lots of money fast and use shortcuts etc. --> normal server.

If you'd want to roleplay a merchant in the runescape world, use your imagination and for a while "pretend" you are in the world of runescape (the poiint of roleplaying), and you're a merchant, which would include selling, buying and making money, but it would go a bit slower --> Roleplaying server.

Okay... i am a DM for my friends in Dungeons and Dragons, and i am a great fan of Role Playing. I think the idea is okay, but your method is entirely wrong. As soon as this server goes online, ANYONE can access it. Stopping high level players like lilyuffie88 from going on the server? That would suck even more. Realize, that while you want to bring Role Playing back to a game with so many (not nice) people, that you cannot exclude like that.

Remember all the racist and nasty remarks made by people? Well how would you feel if you accidentaly slipped and swore at someone and got booted of the server? What would the implications of this be?

You also cannot stop ANYONE from saying noob. It may be offensive to alot of people, but it is a central word in the online community, and nearly impossible to remove.

But as i said, your head's in the right place, (and if you want to come visit me in Canada and play D&D with me, your welcome too). I just don't think the idea will work out, because of the community you have to deal with. A lot of people wouldn't mind the return of real gaming, where having friends was needed to survive in a cuthroat world. (you really would LOVE my D&D games) But really, i don't see this working out. If you can revise so that you can get around all those troubles, then you are a God. Other than that, thanks for putting this forward.

you couldn't capitalize any letters other than the first word,or those behind exclaimation marks, question marks and full stops this is to prevent people from going "SELLING IRON ORES 100 EACH !!!!!!!!!!!", which looks way worst than "Selling iron ores 100 each !!!!!!"

Yeah, I know: You're right, it's very hard~impossible to maintain in the real Runescape world & suggestion, and it is a wild suggestion, but I could always try :)

I know  But I think a filter that is set to capitalize any "I" standing on his own is relatively easy to make. Ofcourse there would always be the problem of other languages.

Why don't you try to bring it back yourself then? Start selling in character, and you will get attention from people. Act like your character would and Roleplay. If you want to bring it back, as in the real world, don't rely on someone else to do it, do it yourself. If i met you ingame, and you role played, i would too. Try it sometime, and see if you can get other people to actually take time to put RPG in MMORPG.
