overclocking

Recommended Posts

some of my computers have realy &%&y processors, and probaly fsbs.

i am considering overclocking as a cheap altrenative to getting them new processors ( and motherboard, and everything else too). what are the basic needs of overclocking?

definitely copper heatsinks. would copper pennies soldered together work well?

also they probaly dont have any more power cords (due to $&%y power supply). is there a way to get a wall outlet fan to cool the pc.?

what kind of percentage ex overclocked/ normal * 100 =

i checked, and both motherboards have the fsb, and processor speeds locked. i cant find the multiplier, or v core, and vdimm anywhere. how can i unlock them. :wall:

also my parents want to save this for a rainy day.

if the motherboard and processors are too old, then you cant even overclock them, it is only a feature on recent boards. soldering pennies would not work at all, the surface of a heatsink is smoothed on a molecular level by a machine so the heat transfer works well. in addition to this, pennies are not solid copper, the government made them partially somthing else because people where melting them down and selling them for more. also, you can buy a power cable splitter for like 2$ at a computer store.

whats a signature?

wow... just wow. You want to overclock your old computer, solder pennies on it and put a room fan on it?

Overclocking todays processors, imo, is useless. That miniscuel ammount of extra speed you get from it doesn't really warrent the reduced life of a processor, or the fact that it probably will shatter any warrenties.

On an older computer, if you don't care about it, go ahead... but dont bother spending money to keep an older computer alive, just get something new and half decent that will last another 3 years or so.

Nothing wrong with Overclocking but you might want to do some research into your hardware setup and consider upgrading your bios. If you do plan to do this get a temp monitoring program like SpeedFAN (http://www.almico.com/speedfan.php).

Usually when people use pennies as cheap heatsinks they wrap them in tinfoil for maximum thermal condutivity. But this IS NOT a good idea for a processer use a factory made cooling system for that. The pennie trick would be a good idea for chip sets. (Remember to use thermal grease like Artic Silver 5!) Also a room fan works fine in a pinch. Just focus it in a way it's blowing on the key componets.

i could just solder the OLD pennies together and cover in aluminum foil,m and use arctic silver. and pennies made before are 1980ish are 98% copper. now they 98% zinc, and 2% copper.

:wall: Just believe me, that would NOT work.

Nothing wrong with using a desk fan ive done it to my P4 in the past.

The danger is if something falls into the fan it could get smacked into something and cause damage. Apart from that And the noise desk fans work well.

:uhh: Water cooling kits are cheap as all hell for something REALLY BASIC.

And it's the kind of thing you don't want to make yourself unless you want to end up buying new everything.

In the time it will take you to build or find the stuff to do what you want (make a copper heat sink or water cooling system), you could just go out help someone with some chores and get some cash.

That way you won't risk damaging your existing PC and you could then buy decent parts which you can use in a future build/mod.

If you post what your existing PC has then we can recommend decent parts that are cheap and will make it run faster.
