Tool?

Recommended Posts

Well, I'm a big friend of music, but there is something that I've been lacking from my music knowledge. And it's tool.

to start, I don't know anything about them. All I know is that they play possibly very good (metally) music, tho I've never heard any of their songs.

Fans of this band are totally fanatic in their fanticism (eh?) and as far as I know, this is one of those band classified as some "very good music"- bands. That classification in my terms basically means a band that no one can hate (for ex. muse) ,so I think I've been missing something badly.

These forums seem to have fairly large crowd of tool fans, so if anyone would like to give me some information?

I'm going to buy one of their albums to see what they are made of, but which one?

all suggestions welcome.

ps. I don't want to ruin the surprise, so please don't link any song samples here as I wouldn't be able to resist to check them out. :P

For starter's, buy their Aenima CD. It's the Greatest Hits to my knowledge.

If you want two good CD's to start you off, get Lateralus and 10,000 Days. They are the best IMO, and they are very very good. Tool are my favourite band at the moment, their music is amazing.

Definately start with Lateralus, because it's the best, but don't expect the other albums to be like that.

Tool went through a progression between their 4 albums (mainly because they all got so much older, they've only released 4 albums since 1992), so if you listen to Undertow and then 10,000 Days, you'll hear a huge difference. Undertow is angry, quick, and not at all as spiritual and subtle as Lateralus or 10,000 Days.

If you ask me, Lateralus is what Tool made immortal. It's as if you get carries away into a 4th dimension.

Aenima is what made Tool world famous, it's a great CD with many of their well known songs on. It's harder than the next ones, but it still bears a lot of ressemblence. The entire album also feels like it's one huge song that smacks you in the face and opens that '4th dimension'. I love it, as much as I love Lateralus and 10,000 days, which are IMHO 3 of the best albums ever made.

Their first album is, like Lat said earlier, angry and fast, more metal-alike than their next ones. Normally the first album of a band is what makes it famous and popular, it's pretty much vice versa with Tool.

10,000 days is -like Lateralus- smooth and continuous. You should buy the albums, interpret the music (and the covers :)) to know what Tool is. You can't describe a great dream either.

I'd say start with Aenima, it's more 'accesable' then Lateralus. But it's also less mature than Lateralus. They're really pissed off on Aenima, everybody is getting it; no-one is spared. Lateralus is a thematically more complex album, and better thought out. I think some knowledge on the band and it's sound would help you appreciate it more. Atleast, that was the case with me. But you could blindly buy Lateralus and Aenima at the same time though. Undertow, Opiate and 10.000 days would come later. :)

Also, to properly understand an album like Lateralus, you need some basic knowledge in things like Jungian psychology, alchemy and other similar subjects.

So if I'm going to buy one tool album, it would be lateralus?

(for the start) I'm going to focus more on musical qualities than on 'the deeper truth' in their music, so I possibly don't need to get their most philosophic album before I get known to them, just the one which would let me get into "toolworld" best. Oh, and which would contain possibly the best music :P .

deeper experiences with their lyrics would come later.

Oh, nearly forgot, Isn't lateralus quite old album? I've never seen it in any music stores?
