best 56k modem?

ouch - well your computer should have come with one if thats what your talking about. I'm not going to lie, but all the 56k modems I've used have been, for the most part, exactly the same. The only difference you'll see between modems is like 28k or 56k now-a-days. The began making "gaming modems" in the mid to late 90's for gaming over 56k, but they didn't do too well because it was the same time that DSL and cable were coming out. I personally never used one, but I can't imagine what made them any faster / better then a normal modem.

Might I ask what this it being used for? Just a quick note - I use to have a seperate phone line hooked up for my 56k internet, and I could keep uptimes close to 2 weeks. Also, if it's for gaming purposes and you notice you have high ping, theres not much you can do for that on 56k BUT if you get more RAM it could help beleive it or not... when I added another 128 stick to my older computer I could connect to battle.net servers about 200 ms faster then previously, and when I added another 512 stick to this computer my ping in BF2 servers dropped from 80-90 to about 30-40.

i would be using the modem for a little bit of everything, games primarily and the computer that its for is one i built, just it randomly disconnect from the internet so it makes things like games hard to play when it keeps happening, i guess im just looking for a dependable modem.

How did you get bf2 to work on 56k modem, because i thought that its broadband only? and i have 1gb of ram going to make it 2gbs of ram before the end of the year.

For serious gaming, I only recommend 256kbps DSL and above.

Tis people like you that we gamers complain about. :P

"Damn 56k'er, look at that ping!"

To answer your question, any 56k modem is as good as the other... If you have to get one though, go for one that is labelled as a V.90 or V.92 modem as they're the most recent, at least they were about 2 years ago. Not really been keeping up with modems.

If your getting disconnects, it might not be your modem, it could be the phone line. If it's an older crappy phone line, or you just get bad service, your going to get a lot of frequent disconnects.

I didn't mean to confuse you, I meant that on BF2 over my satelite internet, I dropped about 30 to 40 ms after adding another 512 stick of RAM, and on battle.net servers over my 56k I dropped my ping about 200ms just by adding another 128 stick (back then that was alot)

56k modem technology is obsolete by several years, i doubt there is a particular brand or model thats noticeably better than the rest.

Listen to the others, broadband is the only way forward.

Well...Hmm...I've heard ssome aussies use a form of handheld satellite gadgets that use sattelite but are only 1.5mps and work-around-so-it's-a-reasonablly-priced internet.

In maine i use dial-up and have found it isn't all that cheaper. It's 15 dollars monthly, and DSL was 20-30 last i checked? Check whenever you can, internet services expand. Whereas i wasnt covered for a horrible two years (since i first checked), they expanded one day and i didnt realize for a year faster interntet was available

my satelite is 30 a month, 5 megs down 3 up no transfer limits so you won't get capped, and there is always service unlike what people think. I get better pings the my friends who have DLS and Cable 5 miles away from me when connecting to chicago servers
