Any Varisty XCountry Runners Out There?

Featured Replies

Hey well ive never been in real great shape all my life, but im ok i guess.

So i decided i wanted to train all year to run XCountry at my school next year

I watch my diet, run daily, and lift as much as possible.

I'm up to 1.75Miles a day, the standard course is 3.1Miles

So i think at a bare minimum i will gain .25 Miles a month (BARE MINIMUM) and should be able to get through training and get good.

Any thoughts?

PS: Firefox 2.0 Spell Checker saved my life in this post.

Exactly, if i dont make it i will be in great shape anyway.

Running has a lot to do mentaly, especially if you train alone, you gotta have it in you to push yourself no matter what (i run alone)

This is the reason your not aloud music during meets

As a former cross country runner, I wish you luck with your effort. It's tough as anything, but if you persevere, it's very rewarding.

Just a few tips: Don't drink caffienated or carbonated drinks.

Vary your running schedule - try running a shorter distance at a faster speed one day, and a longer distance at a slower speed the next.

Learn how to pace yourself.

Lifting is great for health, but if you're focusing on running, don't do it too much - maybe one lifting session for every two or three runs. If you want to run long distances at fast speeds, a ton of upper body muscle will just be extra weight. Building tone and strength is great - just don't turn into the Hulk. :P

Oh yes, and make sure you have good running shoes and running form. Few things are more important than that if you want to avoid wearing your body out.

I hope you find some of that helpful. Good luck. :)

I was going to run track, but my college doesn't have track. But they have cross country. I might try it next year. But it seems really hard. I can do some long distance, but cross country seems insane.

I joined the x-country team at my school recently and its damn hard. I do most of my training at the gym and after a year of training I can run 2.5 miles in 20 minutes without overly stretching myself. I plan to run my first race sometime around Christmas

Thanks Venomai for this super sig and Kwimbob for the awesome avatar!

I just finished up my X-country season, I was JV by the way, and it was so much fun. You just can't imagine the satisfaction of finishing a 5k or 3 mile in less than 20 minutes. Also, I agree with the varying distances, because it prepares you for anything. Be prepared for nasty weather, because most cross country meets don't get cancelled. Good running shoes with [bleep]es are almost a must. I would advise you not to lift a lot, just because it can hurt your arms or legs, which isn't good.

PM me if you need other advice!

The code in my sig should say 1032 not 0132.

i was varsity CC my sophmore and junior year and didnt do it senior year

its probably the best sport you can do, you cant get hurt and its good for you!

what i suggest is to NOT listen to music in an actual race because it just makes you lose focus, it takes some mental training to be able to keep pushing yourself

Yeah, never listen to music while you run. If you run on roads, then you may not be able to hear cars coming and going. Do NOT forget to stretch. I'd advise a short warmup, say .5-1 mile, then stretching for about 10 minutes. Then go on your real run for the day.

I ran 6 miles once, but it took me maybe 45 min. And I wasn't really racing. I was trying to get somewhere.

Good on ya, man! Keep at it. It just needs persistent and determination. (Not that I know the first thing about cross country running...)

I'm getting fitter too! I don't snack mid morning or mid afternoon anymore, meals, milk and water only... plus fruit. I'm not exactly dieting but feeling alot healthier definitely! There's alot of sport at my school, I'm doing 6 hours a week of badminton, cycling 5 miles every day, 3 hours netball, 1 of running and stretching (splits and the like.)

So... yeah, don't give up. My brother (tokytoky3333) did it, but he wasn't that good lol.

Yea i used to run cross country at a county level. Until i misjudged a puddle and blew my knee  , so now after a big recovery I run 800m at a county level. But cross country is a fantastic work out, and nomatter how fit you are the terrain will make u feel it, its brilliant and i loved it.

Don't even think that he was joking. Cross country is one of the best workouts you can get anywhere.
