The Road to 68 Smithing - DONE!

Recommended Posts

I'd been wanting to get 68 Smithing for some time, specifically when I was building the Skill Hall in my POH. I wanted to put a set of Full Mithril in, but I needed to have the level to Smith it myself, rather than the funds to buy a set and toss it in.

This week I officially started on this goal, after sitting at 60 Smithing for a while. I soon discovered that while mithril would give me this reward in fewer bars, mining the ore was time-consuming (because of the spawn time) and frustrating (because of the relatively few mithril rocks :wall: ). So, after mining 90 Mith ore, I decided that steel would be the way to go (and in fact had paved my path to 60 Smithing previously).

My goals:

1. Smelt and Smith 90 mith bars (to save bank space) DONE! 11-8-06

2. Mine 5450 Iron DONE 11-19-06

3. Mine 10,900 Coal. Working on now

4. Mine 6540 Pure Essence (minus what I have already in bank) DONE! 11-14-06

5. Craft ess into Natures.

6. Superheat 5450 Steel bars

7. Smith into steel platebodies

8. High Alch platebodies.

Nice goal. But its quick if you buy 1k steel bars (600k) smith 4k cannonballs (good xp) and sell them with profit. :D

But, you seem to have a good lvlup plan, so goodluck. :D

Day 1:

Smelted and smithed 90 Mithril bars, then high alched them with what nats I currently had in bank. Gained smithing level (lvl 61). Still have 5 mith b axes sitting in bank but can either alch them later or sell in Port Sarim.

Not looking forward to mining all the ore I will need, esp the coal. Crafting all those nats will be a pain too, but look forward to when the resource gathering stage is behind me - smooth sailing from there?

Current stock: 2336 Pure Ess

if i were you, i would not make the nats and spend the time it would take to mine ess, craft nats and superheat to just run back and forth to furnace cos in the long run it will be much cheaper. I made thatmistake before and i soon learned my lesson, so if i were you i'd sell what essence you have already got and spend the money on coal (which is alot faster than mining the coal).

Day 2:

While mining all my own ores and making nats for Superheat and High Alch might take a little longer on the front end, it will allow me to level up multiple skills at once rather than just Smithing. By the end, I will have 77 Mining, 69 Magic (Magic Guild ftw!), and 58 Runecrafting. From there I will only have 4447 Laws till 60 rc :)

Of course there is the risk of getting bored, but by breaking up a big task into a bunch of separate tasks this shouldn't be much of a problem. If I really start hating it, though, I can always train Agility or Fishing for a bit...

Weekend Update:

I mined ess in the evenings Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Today after I reached 5k ess I took a break to chop the Varrock Oaks for a bit (as I will need oak planks for Con eventually) and when I leveled in that (WC 69) I went back to mining Ess. I don't expect to gain any mining levels until I start mining my ores, but that's okay.

Day 6:

I've finished mining Pure Essence for the Nature Runes, and I am currently taking a small break and chopping Oaks for a bit. Once I get the oak logs I will eventually convert to planks for Construction, I will head over to the Ardy bear mine and start mining my iron.

11-27-06 Update:

I have right around 1500 more iron to mine. After this I may take a small break and get a level in Agility or something, and then return to the smithing project.

To prevent the monotony of mining 10,900 coal or crafting over 6k nats all in one stretch, I plan to mine 1k coal, then go to Shilo and craft nats, superheating bars as I go. Lather, rinse, repeat until I have all my steel bars, then go smith them in Seers. Once my plates are all smithed with will be back to Shilo to craft nats and high alch the plates. I still have a little ways to go, but I'm confident that I will get to 68 smithing by New Year's.

Edit: Per the Mining calc on the main page I have 413 iron till 73 Mining :)

After I smith all my steel bars into steel plates and high-alch them, I'll have just about 6.5 million gp, which I will then invest in Construction ::'

12-2-06:

I've been mining coal for a bit now. Unexpected snow days helped give me the time to work on it ::' but I know better than to think that I'll mine all that coal in one stretch without wanting to break something.

Instead I'll use skill levels as minibreaks for the tedious tasks: Mine till lvl, runecraft till lvl, Superheat. Lather, rinse, repeat. And even after all that if I just want to put it down for a bit and do something else, I have my other lvl 60 goals I can hammer away at ::'

Good luck on you goal but if yousmithing for levels in i highly reccoment iron bars and use rings of forging to smelt the ores or superheat. it requires i think for you 8480 iron ores for your level, But making 5450 will require 16350 ores and 2/3 of which is coal and harder to mine iron is definatly the way to go.

Hope it all goes well

12-8-06:

I did a bit of checking and determined that Magic will be my next level, in 284 Superheats. After that will come Runecrafting (758 Nats) and Smithing (1056 steel bars smelted). My next mining level won't come for another 2283 coal -.- . Training four skills simultaneously like this requires some planning and a bit of patience, but the reward of mad total levels (as opposed to only the smithing levels) will be worth it.

Update: 12-15-06

Recently got levels in Runecrafting (now 56) and Magic (now 65 - one lvl from Magic Guild!). I currently have 1049 Steel Bars to smith, which will bring me to 63 Smithing. After smithing these I'll get ready for my next round by mining 1748 Coal (bringing me to 75 Mining), which should be enough to get me to 66 Magic (874 Superheats). This won't affect my RC lvl (which will require 1829 Nats to reach the next level), but that will keep till the next round.

Edit: 63 Smithing reached - 1011 bars to next level.

Update 12-28:

Finished this latest round of coal mining, and currently crafting Nature runes and superheating my steel into bars. This will earn me a level each in Magic and Smithing, but I'm a ways from a runecrafting level at this time, and it will be at least 1000 nats till then even after I finish this round of superheating.

Decided to try crafting 100 or so Nats before superheating, just for variety. This seems to pass the time a bit better.

Update 12-29:

Current levels:

Magic: 66 (Magic Guild ftw!)

Smithing: 64 (not far from 65 after smithing all those steel bars)

Mining: 75 (1390 to next level)

Runecrafting: 56 (936 Nats to next level)

I will need 955 Superheats to my next Magic level, meaning I will need to mine 1910 coal for the next round. Fortunately, this will bbring me tidily into 76 Mining and 57 RC, and well into 65 Smithing. In fact, at this point I will need to smelt and smith 989 steel bars to get to 66 smithing, requiring 1978 coal, so I might as well get the extra coal and go for it! ::'
