Whigs and Tories?

Featured Replies

Ok, I believe this is the basic parties of the United Kingdom, and I've heard Canada, but I'm skeptical on that.

So, how does a Whig and Tory match up with Conservatives and Liberals? Which is most like which? Which does the population of Britain tend to lean more toward.

I'm interested in British politics. Since I've grew bored of American. What and when is the next Prime Minister election? Who is in running, that we know of? What is negative and positive about the current Prime Minister?

I'm just wondering, because sites like Wikipedia don't help, because I need a more personal response.

I'm just increasing my knowledge on world politics. :P

There hasn't been a Whig Party in America since the early 1850s.

I'm British, voted in the last general election a few years ago and I've never heard the term whig.

Yep, though the name was borrowed from the British Whigs, who date back to before the Glorious Rebellion.

No. It is the Conservative party (a.k.a. Tories), Labour and the Liberal Democrats. 3 primary parties.

Hmm, my Britsh friend was like WTf when I mentioned Tory and Whig. I knew I hadn't heard wrong. It must be uncommon to use the names.

So if the Tories are conservative, and liberals are liberals, then what are the Labour's?

Tories is a term that is still used, particularly in informal circumstances.

But Whig is no longer used?

Labour's are like Social Democrats I'm assuming?

Whigs and Tories were the original parties in America in it's early years. Neither exist in any way shape or form today. The whigs became the Democratic Party. The Republican Party was formed in the 1850's as the anti-Slavery Party.

And Conservatism and Liberalism have nothing to do with Parties as they can change affiliation quite often.

Eventually the Whigs evolved into the Liberal Party (whilst the Tories became the Conservative Party).

Britain has had 3 main parties for the last 100 years: Labour (leftish), Liberals (centreish), and Conservatives (rightish).

Tony Blair is lambasted for lying about Iraq, and will stand down next year and be replaced most likely by Gordon Brown the current Chancellor. The Conservatives have a new leader, who is charismatic but has no real policies. The Liberals, despite being the only main party to oppose the Iraq war, aren't particularly making headway, so their only hope to have any 'real' power is that there is a hung parliament.

If you have any kind of real interest in British politics, I suggest that you read a bit about how the democratic system works here, since that explains why we don't just have 2 parties like in America, and smaller parties can make a difference.

For it is the greyness of dusk that reigns.

The term Whigs is not used anymore. I believe Michael Howard (the previous Conservative leader) tried to have the informal name Tories dropped but it has never been a real concern.

I wouldn't say so. Some of Labour's policies such as the privatisation of certain sectors of the NHS would not be deemed a trait of a left-wing party.

Prior to the 1997 General Election, then yes, Labour would be deemed left. Things were changed however; Tony Blair, Gordon Brown, Peter Mandelson and Alistair Campbell centralised Labour's policies and that is one reason why they won the '97 election. The Lib'Dems are the main left-wing of the three parties.

Labour was founded to be the 'working class' party. But this was around the time when the Tories and Whigs both fought over control of the Commons and the policy of laissez-faire was adopted by both parties. But anyway, I won't go that far into it.

Most of that is true. The Conservatives new Leader, David "Dave" Cameron, is often ridiculed for having very similar policies to that of Labour.

The Liberal Democrats have lost their momentum they had at the last General Election. Partly due the Leadership contest that brought a lot of skeletons out of the closet for a few MPs.

Brown looks very likely to succeed Blair. Brown's policies - although he hasn't said any - are guessed to be tougher on terrorism and sceptical of the Euro.

The Lion and the Unicorn: Gladstone Vs Disraeli by Richard Aldous for some tasty background knowledge of the Whigs and Tories. The author and broadcaster Jeremy Paxmen's books will offer some insight into politics and British society too. So those are defintely worth a read if you wish to pursue the subject.

Offline and unavailable.

Two main parties.

- Conservatives (Tories) Traditionally Right Wing.

- Labour. Traditionally Left Wing.

The Liberal democrats consider themselves as a main party but they do not go anywhere.

And no lol why do you always want to get stuff from John Lewis. Its over ̣̉300 more then than what i paid.

John Lewis is a great, great shop.

I wouldn't say so. Some of Labour's policies such as the privatisation of certain sectors of the NHS would not be deemed a trait of a left-wing party.

hence "leftish" :)

As far as your skepticism on Canada goes - members of the Conservative party of Canada are nicknamed Tories. I'm not sure how far it extends past that though.

being a history buff i am, a tory was a term used to describe colonials that were loyal to the king of Britian in the american revolution, whig was used to describe some who believed in the revolutionary cause.
