Faux
It's really getting stale how topics end up in an argument about religion. I like debates and all, but the same thing is said over and over and over on these threads. :: Guess the Movie Contest Champion: pfilc23 ::
tripsis
I agree that this really is an issue we need to address. Some of the most random topics (especially lately) turn into large flame wars and debates about religions. It usually results in a mod being forced to lock the entire topic (or spend an hour deleting all the 'spammy' religious posts) when the original purpose of the thread was perfectly fine. Religion is such a heavy topic and often times interesting to discuss, but some people can't handle light debates on such a huge matter. So almost all religion-basesd topics (and non religion based, usually something to do with morals) turn into huge arguments about religion. - 99 fletching | 99 thieving | 99 construction | 99 herblore | 99 smithing | 99 woodcutting - - 99 runecrafting - 99 prayer - 125 combat - 95 farming - - Blog - DeviantART - Book Reviews & Blog
____
In - there have been a number of topics which have had NOTHING to do with religion at all - which have somehow turned into some huge debate about it after one off hand comment :uhh:
Mercifull
I like talking about religion, however recently there have literally been hundreds of topics on the subject and they are attracting very vocal people who really dont know what they are talking about and it is resulting in flame wars. Perhaps just a temporary ban on the subject for a little while to cool things off? I feel it slightly insulting that a perminant ban on such a huge subject in our society could be enforced Mercifull <3 Suzi "We don't want players to be able to buy their way to success in RuneScape. Anesthesia
Perhaps just a temporary ban on the subject for a little while to cool things off? I'd be for that. Things have been getting out of hand, topics have been dragged off topic and into religious arguments and they have got far too heated. I think some cooling off would help. Some people are changed by being a moderator. I wouldn't be.
insane
Perhaps just a temporary ban on the subject for a little while to cool things off? I'd be for that. Things have been getting out of hand, topics have been dragged off topic and into religious arguments and they have got far too heated. I think some cooling off would help. And/or more strict rules for people getting out of hand on those topics. For instance, a user once suggested that all members of a certain religious affilitation kill themselves, called them all idiots, etc. Afaik, no action was taken at all. It's these users that are ruining the discussions for everyone else.
pokemama
All "budding executives" used to be warned never to talk about two delicate topics at work (back before I was born, in the fifties when people were more concerned about good manners). These were politics and religion. The reason is because these are both such personal issues and usually not open to "persuasion" by others. In other words, people get upset and emotional when these issues are discussed. Ironically, the same people that dislike the conflict are quick to holler "censorship!" if such discussions are banned. (Guess they only want people to agree with their views, lol?) Another RS fansite forum completely prohibits these topics because they ALWAYS get out of hand ... and grumbling about the rule is unceasing. The traditional death knell of any internet discussion (this dates back to the late 1980's) is sounded when the words "Nazi" or "Hitler" are used. All rational thought has left the discussion by then. How often do these topics get down to that point? I support the ban. Not because I'm in favour of censorship - but because of the work it makes for moderators trying to decide who has gone too far, and the accusations and conflict that continually occur. Here's a lame idea: make one topic for each point of view, and only allow posts that agree with it, lmao. No cross-posting of the other point of view allowed.   it's a lot easier to get over yourself when you look at intelligence the same way you look at beauty, or height, or eye color: being smart is easy, but being good is hard ... being smart is handed to you, being good is handed to *nobody*. Anesthesia
Implemented. Those caught creating religious discussions or dragging other topics into a religious discussion (read: slanging match) will be sent for re-education. Some people are changed by being a moderator. I wouldn't be.
insane
but because of the work it makes for moderators trying to decide who has gone too far, and the accusations and conflict that continually occur. In my 26 month tenure as an offtopic moderator, I never spent any extra time on deciding whether to lock a religion topic as opposed to a spam topic. Having been there, done that, I can say that I may have split a thread on religion once or twice, in over two years. The threads that aren't originally meant for religion, yes, I split more often. But the threads designed specifically for religious discussion never really had problems with them.
