When you are trying to have a bit of a mosh, you don't want people to be swinging their arms around and kicking randomly into the air. They just make moshing impossible. Exactly the reason you just need to throw them out of the pit. Generally, i've noticed, once there's a fair amount of people actually moshing, and they get thrown out, they won't even try and come back in.
