Arch_Tyrant
Ok so just recenlty my laptop has started shutting itself off randomly. It irritates me becuase i have no idea what's wrong and it's annoying. I've had it for about a year now i dont know whats wrong... Also...Anytime i try to play any kind of game my computer freezes in the middle of it...(Except Runescape because of course it runes off Java) But im talking about games like CD Computer games and Warcraft or anything you can download online. Would i possibly need more RAM? Could someone help me out here?

Cruiser
Insufficient RAM shouldn't cause a reboot under any condition. Bad RAM can, but that could be just one of several causes. Are all of your drivers up to date (video card, ect)? All the latest windows updates installed? Any recent driver or hardware changes?
Arch_Tyrant
Is your laptop overheating? Mine shutdown once because I was playing Final Fantasy Tactics off an emulator on my laptop (off the PS Disc). See thats what i think but is there anyway to be sure or anyway to avoid it? (well duh i know not playing as much is one way to avoid it but is there another way?) Insufficient RAM shouldn't cause a reboot under any condition. Bad RAM can, but that could be just one of several causes. Are all of your drivers up to date (video card, ect)? All the latest windows updates installed? Any recent driver or hardware changes? Whats the difference between bad RAM and insuficiant RAM (sorry i know practicaly nothing about computers) and ya im pretty sure everythings up to date and no i havent changed any of the hardwares...Do you want me to tell you what it says next time it shuts off again on the reboot screen? Something about problems with a 'FAT32?' in my C drive... But hey idk anything about computers.
Cruiser
See thats what i think but is there anyway to be sure or anyway to avoid it? Setting the laptop on a hard, flat surface (like a table) will make sure it's getting good airflow. Whats the difference between bad RAM and insuficiant RAM Bad RAM would mean part of the RAM is defective (broken) and can be the cause of problems sometimes. Insufficient RAM means the computer doesn't have enough RAM to properly do what it's doing. Neither of these sound like the case because of the next quote. :P Do you want me to tell you what it says next time it shuts off again on the reboot screen? Something about problems with a 'FAT32?' in my C drive... If possible, try to take a picture of the screen or write down exactly what it says next time you see the message. It could help out quite a bit.

Kaphias
Most computers will shut down when the overheat. Runescape is a very CPU demanding game, and therefore the fans will turn on to prevent overheating. You may just need new fans. Also, as said before, tray setting you laptop on a hard surface next time. 8,325th to 99 Firemaking 3/9/08 | 44,811th to 99 Cooking 7/16/084,968th to 99 Farming 10/9/09 | Runescaper August 2005-March 2010Tip.it Mod Feb. 2008-Sep. 2008 | Tip.it Crew Sep. 2008-Nov. 2009

Arch_Tyrant
do you play the laptop on your lap or sofa or something like that I do sometimes but mostly on the desk in my room. If possible, try to take a picture of the screen or write down exactly what it says next time you see the message. It could help out quite a bit. Ok i'll try to get it to you soon. Yup, I'd look into replacing the fans. Ok  But i want to make sure that's the problem before i start tearing apart my laptop. Bad RAM would mean part of the RAM is defective (broken) and can be the cause of problems sometimes. Insufficient RAM means the computer doesn't have enough RAM to properly do what it's doing. Cruiser
Ok so Bad or insuficient RAM isnt the problem with my laptop shutting off but would getting more RAM fix my gaming problem? Depends on how much you currently have and what kind of games you play. Go to: Start > Control Panel > System On the window that opens up, there should be a windows logo and in the bottom right corner there will be some system info under "Computer:". It should list your CPU speed and amount of RAM you currently have. Yup, I'd look into replacing the fans. Most of the time just taking compressed air and blowing any dust out of it will fix any overheating problem. If the fans really have died the whole thing needs to be sent back to Acer for replacement by them because of defective parts.
Faux
edit - nvm. I had a problem with my Acer too, but I fixed it easily. But we don't have the same problem, sorry. :: Guess the Movie Contest Champion: pfilc23 ::

That sounds a lot like the windows disk check that runs after an "improper shutdown" on some machines. Does it have a blue screen and a percentage bar across the bottom? It's not anything bad, but doesn't help with the problem unfortunately. :( Unless someone else has some other thoughts on it, it's probably time to take it in to a computer shop and talk face to face with someone or call Acer to help solve the problem. :? AMD Turion 64 Mobile Technology ML-30 160 GHz, 448 MB of RAM Gonna guess you have a total of 512mb because it's a laptop and most likely uses integrated video, which will be where the other 64mb went. It's not a bad amount, but not the greatest if you're playing any high end games. Having another 512mb installed wouldn't be a bad idea but isn't not something to worry about.

And what should i do to stop my random shutting off problem!! Lol... username388
To make sure it's overheating you should heat up your processor and see if it does it. If any apps such as Speedfan. Use Prime95 to heat up your processor. Choose just benchmarking when it first starts. Then go to Options>Torture Test>In Place FFT's Let this run for a while, while monitoring you CPU temps. Post your temps and whether or not your computer restarted.
