Guest XplsvBam
I'm leaning towards the squier guitars right now because they seem well made and affordable. I have only been playing guitar since september so I'm no were near a pro. I'll probably buy nicer guitars in the future but I think this one should get me through college. And is there anyone that knows what the difference between a fat strat, strat, fat stratocaster, and stratocaster? I think all of these models are strickly fender correct? insane
Don't get a Squier. They're a cheap Fender knock-off and unless you're looking for something really cheap I'd not suggest getting one. If I have time later I'll look for an economical electric that might be better suited. I know a bit more about purchasing acoustics so I guess it's time to broaden my knowledge. What price range do you have?
Guest XplsvBam
I'm thinking around $300.00. I need an amp also :?
irulepoker
Well, as everyone knows, Fender's are the way to go. Try this: Musicians Friend They have everything you'll need. Thank my friend Jeff, who showed me this in school. ( I know nothing about Guitars, so thank him. :P ) My Farewell thread. Please post nicely, or die. :^_^:Yea, I'd vote for him too. But I don't think they let Iraqis vote :P
insane
I'm thinking around $300.00. I need an amp also :? You're going to hate me for this, but I would advise you to wait until you have more money before you get a guitar and an amplifier. I know you already have an acoustic, so you aren't without a guitar, and I don't think you want to be spending $300 on a guitar and amplifier you won't be happy with and are going to be wanting to replace in a couple years. Never the less I'm still looking, if I find something I want thats not in my price range I'll save for it. So squiers are really that bad? Have you ever played one? I realize they are fender knock-offs but that doesn't mean they are bad. Whats better hollow body or solid? [/guitarnewb]
insane
Basically, with guitars, you get what you pay for. So if a Squier is cheap, it's gonna suck. My cousin had one and he didn't enjoy it - I own a real Fender, and when he played mine, he said it felt a ton better and was easier to play. As far as hollow-solid bodies, it depends what kind of music you want to play. Hollowbody electrics give a cleaner sound, better for jazz/blues/country guitar. It is possible to add distortion to hollowbody electrics, but they often feedback the more you try and distort the sound. Solidbody electrics are more for rock, and you get rock out some sweet hardcore blues stuff as well. I personally couldn't decide and went with a semi-hollowbody guitar (Fender Thinline Telecaster '69 reissue).

Well seeing as you went with a semi-hollowbody is why your cousin thought it sounded a ton better. I appriecate you opinion, and now I'm less into the squiers then I was. But remember this is going to be my first guitar I don't have to have the best guitar ever, its going to sound bad no matter what I play. I also heard that no matter how amazing of an electric guitar is without a good amp its going to sound bad. So I was thinking of getting a $200-$250 guitar and buy a cheap amp, then save up for like a $300-$400 amp in the mean time practice and get good at the electric. I really don't want a crappy guitar though so I probably wont get a squier, but the crowd on the squier seems really mixed, some love it some don't. this looks like a nice guitar :-s $250 squier. I also really like this fender, but I don't know what the heck a lite ash telecaster means. this fender lite ash stratocaster is the same price but it seems like a nicer guitar. (and seeing as I'm new would like a whammy bar.) Whats the difference between a stratocaster and a telecaster? does a stratocaster just have a whammy? irulepoker
Like I said, Musicans Friend has some fantastic stuff, with great prices. The sales are coming to a close though, so get your stuff while you can. My Farewell thread. Please post nicely, or die. :^_^:Yea, I'd vote for him too. insane
Well seeing as you went with a semi-hollowbody is why your cousin thought it sounded a ton better. I said felt better :P played better; it wasn't plugged in so it didn't really have sound. I also heard that no matter how amazing of an electric guitar is without a good amp its going to sound bad. So I was thinking of getting a $200-$250 guitar and buy a cheap amp, then save up for like a $300-$400 amp in the mean time practice and get good at the electric. That isn't a terrible idea. Only reason I was telling you to wait is because you've got an acoustic so that could tide you over. Whats the difference between a stratocaster and a telecaster? does a stratocaster just have a whammy? A Stratocaster has humbuckers; basically these are the pickups that give the guitar the distortion sound. Telecasters have a different pickup that isn't so great on distortion but is much better at giving more of a clean sound, even a "twangy" sound sometimes. It just comes down to personal preference. If you don't really have a preference, go for the Stratocaster, as it's probably a more general type of guitar than the telecaster.

A stratocaster is, as standard fitted with three single coil pickups (two standard, bridge pickup offset), not humbuckers. Humbuckers are double coil pickups, used for a fatter sound, and for noise reduction, much in the sameway that a stratocaster in the bridge/middle or middle/neck pickup selection will do. The difference between Stratocasters is the pickups and shape. Basically, the Stratocaster is a great 'Jack of all trades' guitar, the Telecaster is more specific in its sound. Thats not to say that they can't be used for rock etc though, lots of people use them for it. La lune ne garde aucune rancune.

assassin_696
I agree with insane in that you get what you pay for generally, and you can't expect a Squier to sound just like a Fender. BUT I think as long as you don't get the cheapest Squier out there you can get a pretty good guitar nowadays. I used a Squier for a few years and it was fine for learning the basics on, and I still bring it out now and again for a good thrash. Fender's are a very nice guitar, but because there's such a brand image associated with them you'll pay through your teeth for them. You can easily get a Strat equivalent from a good Japenese brand that's a lot cheaper and sounds just as good. Maybe try Aria Guitars. Also don't forget to look at Gibson guitars or Epiphone, their cheaper (but better than Squier) equivalent. I recently bought an Epiphone Les Paul Studio Edition for ̢̮â¬Å¡Ãâã180 and it's a lovely guitar, very nice. Guest XplsvBam
I was wondering about the Epiphones they look like nice guitars. I'm still trying to figure this out. Anyone else have advice?
dippymister
I would reccomend getting an Epiphone. I have one and theyre very good quality guitars for the money. The question is, an SG or a Les Paul. I have an SG which I like a lot, however I would just suggest going and trying some of them out and seeing which one you like better, becasue its mostly just opinion, and also the Les Paul is a lot more popular. I wouldn't really reccomend getting a Squire, if you're going to get a strat or tele, just save up and get a Fender. Also, if you're going to buy a Fender, definitely get a Mexican version, as they're much cheaper, and the only difference is that they're made in Mexico, and not as good quality, but for someone at your level of guitar playing that really doesn't matter. Also, if you're trying to decide between a fender stratocaster or telecaster, just note that telecasters have a very twangy, and sort of cournty sound. But other than that, I would just suggest trying out some guitars and seeing what you like best. good luck! \ :ohnoes:My Guide on Obby Mauling! foofoomagoo
Well, i have a Squier which i must say isn't that well made. I also have a Gibson sg, which is my pride and joy, and feels a lot better then a squier. So in thee nd i would recommend a Gibson from personal experience 26M Crafting XP
