Exp = HitDone*4 and not on the level of the monster. So, I prefer to level fast by doing non-stop slaughter of fast spawning monsters that can't hurt me. I find that the first 2 levels of the SoS are ideal for that. IIRC, the flesh crawlers will auto attack anyone. If you can find a room crowded with lower level monsters that respawn quickly, then you can kill non-stop for hours without having to stop for healing food or bank runs.
