wcerforlyfe
My idol is Bill Gates, I have always looked up to him and I am interested in computer programming/web based game design. Now, you may assume that I am a noob in this area because, frankly, I know little to none about anything computer related other than the small tid bits that I can extract from other members posts. So that I might get more advice related to my experience level, here is some backround information on myself... I am fourteen years of age, currently in eighth grade. http://www.turnpoint.net/wireless/cantennahowto.html
wcerforlyfe
I have played for two years. I am pretty good with MS PAINT, amatuer at Photo Shop CS2. I am browsing Tip It on my Sprint Samsung A900 phone with unlimited internet acess, and usually use it during the evening. I am very interested in computer programming and seeing as I am only fourteen I have limited resources (money) and technology. So please, leave advice that could help me learn and get an early start on programming. http://www.turnpoint.net/wireless/cantennahowto.html
Defender2516
when i was 14, i never published any of my websites, but I LOVED making them. I would say start with a Web Page editor, make it how you want, get your skills up that way, and consider using a host to publish it later. Right now you just need to get the experience, then that will cover the cost of any web hosting if you make a biz out of it ;) ~Defender~ If you love me, send me a PM. 8 - Love me2 - Hate me
wcerforlyfe
Thank you very much for the input. Do you have any prefrences for web page editors, preferably free? Also, if you have any good links I would appreciate it. http://www.turnpoint.net/wireless/cantennahowto.html
Guest Cosinus
Web Page Programming would be a good start, there you'll learn abit how programming works. A good Free Web Editor is PHP Designer 2007, it has syntax highlighting and very handy short cuts. It can also handle multiple documents and save them all in just a click. You can download it here: http://www.mpsoftware.dk/downloads.php Then I suggest you read some guides on how HTML (Hypertext Markup Language) works. This site is very good and I used it to learn HTML and XHTML: http://www.w3schools.com Start with the HTML Guide and then the XHTML guide, after that you can move on to CSS. Good luck! wcerforlyfe
Thank you very much. As soon as I get on my computer I will check it out. http://www.turnpoint.net/wireless/cantennahowto.html
nightshade53
Web based programming: I suggest getting comfortable with HTML and CSS, then moving onto Client Side scripting (Javascript). The syntax and layout of Javascript is similar to OOP (Object-Orienated Programming) Languages, which I'm guessing is where you'd like to go. There are loads of tutorials and help sites out there, but I recommend w3schools, which is very easy to follow. When you feel reasonably confident with Client side web scripting, you could move onto MySQL/PHP, which is Server side programming. Again, use w3schools. To create PHP web pages you need to either: [*:w1rpf25z]Install a web server onto your computer. [*:w1rpf25z]Find an online web host which supports MySQL/PHP. If you choose to install a web server onto your computer, you can either download and install all 3 parts (Apache, PHP and MySQL) or use EasyPHP, which is an all-in-one web server. I'd go for the EasyPHP option :). Also you might want to have a mess round with the various Adobe web design products: Flash, Photoshop, Dreamweaver etc. There are ways of downloading the 30 day trial and making it last forever, but you'l have to figure them out for yourself :-w Goodluck anyway :)
Halo0630
After doing the above.. I use a program called Dreamweaver, its not a free down loadable program and in my opinion a little complicated. This is a suggestion for a future time when you want to go a little farther than just making a simple website.
wcerforlyfe
Lol, I downloaded the 30 Day trial of PhotoShop CS2 and I have had it for over a year now. Thanks again for that advice. Also, I have a limited amount of money but, any prefrences to computers that I could use primarily for programming and/ web design? http://www.turnpoint.net/wireless/cantennahowto.html

Also, I have a limited amount of money but, any prefrences to computers that I could use primarily for programming and/ web design? as in the machine itself? you dont need a powerhouse machine to do that... anything will do really... even with the cheapest of parts. This is a suggestion for a future time when you want to go a little farther than just making a simple website. Dreamweaver isn't the best of programs to go about learning with. You're much, much better off learning to hand code your pages in something like Notepad++ or another syntax highlighting app that is free to download. Yes you can hand code pages in Dreamweaver but it isn't worth paying for just for that.

I used plain old Notepad for about a year before I could be arsed to download anything better. :)

I agree dreamweaver is a c**p learning tool, you tend to focus on the look of the page rather then the code because dreamweaver does it all for you. don't get me wrong dreamweaver is great for anyone who knows a some html and in the right hands it can create some amazing pages.
