My first vector piece, made as a request on Deviantart.

I'm stuck on shading in vectors - does anyone reccomend any programs? I've downloaded Inkscape.

You can shade it in the same way that you created your vector. Connect points to make a shape, then give it a colour. :)

Inkscape is a great open source program for vectors in general.

I confess,I have read the dictionary and the concept of a vector is still alien to me.Typography is still quite foreign too,but well.

I like those I understood though =D>

Vectors, in terms of digital art, are pretty simple.

They use Bezier Curves, which is like a maths equation that determines the path of a line between two points.

All the rendering in vector programs use maths to work out the position of the shapes. That's why vector art looks like it does, stuff is edited via shapes and lines rather than pixel by pixel, which is what raster programs do. Raster means that type of pixel handling, Photoshop, MS Paint, GIMP etc are raster programs.

Subsequently the filesize of vectors are much smaller, since raster files store the information of every single pixel on the canvas.

Vectors use the maths, which is much easier to store.

Vector art refers to a graphic that can be scaled infinitely without any quality loss. Essentially, a vector is a lot of different points that, when connected and filled with a colour, create an image. Rescaling the vector simply repositions the points.

In more general terms, e.g. on fanboards, "vector art" uses path-based tools (such as the pen tool in Photoshop or Adobe Illustrator) to create or add to a "raster" graphic (jpg, gif, etc). "Vectors," in this sense, are often created by tracing or filtering a photograph (such as the OP).

Typography deals with the art of text/type. On fanboards, once again, the term is used differently, where it basically translates to "a mismash of different text and often meaningless sentences squeezed into the dimensions of a tag."

I do need help with Inkscape though; could anybody provide a website/tutorial for Inkscape?

Anyway, the vectors are ncie but the sigs need something more imo.

It can't be too hard to learn to use Inkscape. Right now I'm half-trying to learn how to use fontforge too, something you have to know inkscape to be able to use. Hard as crap, my dad said it looks like AutoCAD 2.5. (->Freaking ancient)

Just one question about the vector: why is the flower stalk thingy black? :? But it's pretty nice IMO, although indeed quite simple.

That's what colour the stalk was in the stock.
