  3. I just got 76 fishing, and am wondering if anyone has an opinion on when I should switch to shark fishing? I always use granite lobsters for the invisible fishing boost + their fish finding ability, so if you know when sharks become effective with my lvl + familiar, let me know! otherwise, monks continue to be profitable... :
  4. there are 5 tree spots (gnome stronghold, varrock castle, lumbridge, taverly and falador park) there are 5 fruit spots (east catherby, lletya, brimhaven, gnome maze and gnome stronghold) there are 6 herb spots (troll stronghold roof, catherby, north ardougne, falador south, port phasmatys and harmony island) if you want xp (and money is no issue) then just plant whatever gets you the most xp. if you want xp (and money is an issue) then try to balance cost with xp (ie: maples instead of yews/mages) if you want money, plant the good herbs (ranarrs and snapdragons). don't be fooled, fruit is great xp. not as good as trees, but way better than allotments. I suggest that you plant all herb, tree and fruit plots, and I like to harvest bushes for whiteberries (just harvest, not replant. the berries repswn pretty quickly). also, limpwurts are good money. if you're gonna plant herbs a lot, you might as well buy some allotment seeds (I use strawberries) to get as much xp as possible.
  5. the ring of wealth does not increase your chance of getting a rare drop. it increases the chance that the rare drops you get will be better rares. it's like this: there are 2 wheels, one wheel that determines your average drops, and one that determines rares. when you get a kill, you spin the first (average) wheel. on the average wheel, there is a slot for rares. if you hit the rare slot, you get to spin the rare wheel. the rare wheel is the only wheel that the ring of wealth affects. if you get the rare wheel, the ring of wealth increases your chances of getting a better rare. I repeat: the ring of wealth does not affect the common (average) drops. it just increases the chances that your rare drops will be the more valuable rares.

  7. this is great! but it would be a bit more useful if it was listed by the clue you get... for example: "in a place with many willows" is north of seers bank, but you don't immediately know that it should be north of seers. unless certain clues can lead to multiple locations, this might be a useful addition to the guide. otherwise, thanks a lot for the help. the leprechaun magic is amazing!
  8. yep, I definitely have a welfare method. I haven't spent much money on seeds up until now, but I realize that low-level seeds are gonna take me forever, so I've started buying maple and pineapple seeds. they're reasonably priced, and I can make enough money each day to pay for the seeds I use by hunting. it's still gonna take me a long time, but I'm prepared to go the distance. :thumbsup:

  10. this is making me angry, so this will be my last post. let me start by saying that I have read more demonstrably false statements about the runescape economy in this thread than ever before, and almost all of them were from people who want to get rid of junk trades. first off, magzar, you seem to be saying that there is no profit in junk. this is true if you buy junk. but no one does that, because there is no profit in it!!! junk is created as a byproduct from skilling, which almost everyone does, despite the fact that they know most of what they make is not sellable. they do it for the levels. now they have millions of gp worth of junk in their bank. they hold onto it because they hope against hope that someday they'll get a fair value for it. they know that those items will never sell on the ge. but they didn't pay for that junk, and it only cost them time they were willing to spend even if they never got any money for their work. so it cost them nothing. I know this is true because I have 16k maple longs (u) in my bank which I made myself and which I would throw away if I wasn't thinking maybe someday they'd be useful. now all of a sudden, hurray! a rare drop! I'm gonna be rich! I wander over to the ge and, lo and behold, there's my item! but wait, it's only listed as 10m, maximum! what a drag because I know of someone who wants my item badly enough to pay 20m for it, but they cant because of the limits of the ge. now, this is the key point, so pay attention: I'm not forcing this man to pay for both my items and my junk. I don't have a gun to his head saying "pay me more than the ge maximum." he is willing to do that. he approaches me and says "I'm willing to give you 20m for that item, but because of the ge and trade limits, I can only give you 10.06m. so I am willing to buy a bunch of useless junk that I know you have and don't want and can't use." now this is not happening in an economic vacuum. there is a reason he is willing to pay more then the ge value. because he thinks the item is worth it. it is useful, and there is a huge demand for the item, so much so that others are also willing to pay more than the ge thinks the item should cost. so I sell him the item and my useless junk. junk I was willing to work for, that I have, that is worth something, but that I did not pay for. and I get an amount of money larger than what I would have gotten on the ge. this is pure profit to me, since the junk was not doing anything useful, so it had no monetary value and I don't miss it. but I did get money for it because an outside source claimed that the items I thought were useless and valueless are worth something. PROFIT! what you are suggesting is that I make less money by forcing me to sell my item for 10m. just so that people in the future might be able to get more than I'll get for the item. but by then it will be less rare, so even if I just held onto the item for a few weeks and then sold it, it would still be worth less money. but as an entrepreneur, I want maximum value for what I have. this is called capitalism. I would also like to add that, in the case of dragon claws, coinshare causes a lot of claws to hit the market at med value, but since there are always so many offers in for max value, the cost of dragon claws is continually going up. by large amounts daily. in review: ~junk does not cost anything. people are willing to do what it takes to make it with no expectation of making any money. so it is free. ~junk has a monetary value, but it will never be realized because no one will buy it by itself. there is no point in paying for it because, as you have correctly said, if you buy 10m junk, then sell dclaws for 20m, you're only gaining 10m, which you could have gotten from the ge. ~no one is "scamming" anyone into junk trades. they are between 2 willing parties who both understand the economics of what they are doing. one person is getting rid of useless but valuable but unsellable junk so that he can make more money from selling a rare item he has. the other is obtaining a rare that he wants badly enough to overpay for it, and he understands he will receive a lot of useless but valuable but unsellable junk with it, just so he can get that rare. and maybe in the future, if he gets a rare item, he can use that junk to gain greater profits. or he can just dump it, since all he really wanted was the rare, and would have been willing to pay 20m for it even if he didn't get the junk with it. this is what junk trades are. if the ge worked better, we might not need them. but no one gets hurt, and no one is forced to spend more than they're willing. what I hear a lot of in this thread is whining. whining about supply and demand. you want the same profit as others get, but aren't willing to do the work they did to get the junk. you want communism, but you're in competition with capitalism. the items cost as much as they do because of economics. in my opinion, the system has some flaws, but it works. I wouldn't be opposed to some of the changes suggested, but junk trading has existed for a while and all we've gotten from jagex is a few minor tweaks to pricing, and it helps people earn the money that supply and demand dictate they should receive. so take your own advice and sell your rares in the ge, help drive the price up. but others who have the means to junk trade will continue to do so. it's just how it is. I'm done...

  12. you could totally use cooked fish (or raw fish) as junk, no problem... except those are items that are in demand anyhow, and would sell regardless. the point of junk is that no one will buy it. it's essentially useless, and yet with the ge and the trade restrictions, they have value. it's not a scam, the people that buy your rare understand that they're getting useless items along with the one thing they want most. what this is doing is essentially turning useless items with real-world value into currency. they're a substitute for cash. and they depreciate in value as the value of rares comes closer to the stated value on the ge. people can use items that the ge claims have value, but no one will buy. is that so bad? people without junk are gonna sell rares on the ge just to get immediate cash. as supply increases, demand drops, and so the price offered (in junk) will drop. eventually there will be no need to trade for certain items in junk. but until that happens, no one wants to take the profit loss incurred by selling an item at less than the value assigned to it by the free market. if a man can sell an item at 5m, or sell it at 10m by using items with no value to him, but assigned value by the market, he will invariably choose to sell the item for the greatest profit. if junk had some value to the seller, it would never be used. if junk had no value to the market, it would never be used. however, things are not that way. junk has monetary value, but no one will buy it for actual cash. however, the market declares that it is worth something. most people obtain junk through honest means. their work yields results that no one will buy, but has value nonetheless thanks to the ge. I cannot blame people for trying to use their effort to obtain greater profits, especially if the buyer is willing to purchase useless items in order to gain what they desire. the buyers in these cases are not being swindled, they know full well that they are paying extra for stuff they cant use. I see no problem in junk trades...
  13. why is junk trading so bad? I'll admit, it puts the price of new, rare items out of reach. but whether it is the controlled market of the ge or the uncontrolled market of junk trades, eventually market saturation will drive prices in both markets to be the same. when dclaws came out, they were the rarest of the rare. mostly because they were new! even d full helms had been out for months. but over the past and coming weeks, the black-market and ge prices will slowly approach each other. people without junk will sell for max on the ge (and get it!) and people with junk will earn a higher profit. no one wants to be the guy to sell dclaws at 5m when street value is 50m. so people have no incentive to sell on the ge if they have the means to raise the price at no cost to themselves, ie, the junk they keep from leveling. maple longbows unstrung, pouches, scrolls, what-have-you. these things have NO use outside of junk trades. they are worthless rewards for hard work put into increasing a skill. some people see this as justice! finally, the hard work they put into gaining xp can pay off. the thing about junk is this: if you have to pay for it, it doesn't help. if you could make 5m, or spend 5m to make 10m, there is no difference. buying junk is convoluted and not really worth it. making junk is skill-related and costs money. in the end, the time spent getting junk is either free (because it was honestly earned in search of xp) or costly (any profit is negated by the time it took to obtain the junk, which could have been used to gain xp). I do not know of any methods to gain junk that result in huge profit, or even small profit with no waste of time. for those of us without junk, we can usually sell our valuable items on the ge for max (if we want to) or even just wait for others to do the same and drive up the price. for those of us with junk, we can meet the demands of those with the money to pay more than the ge demands, and the desire to do so. either way, out valuables can be sold for a profit. however, it is usually the person who devotes the time to create junk that profits in the end, and is that so bad?

  18. thanks for all the support, and don't be too hard on butt, I asked, he elected not to come. 90 is good, but maybe he only takes time away from his own activities for stuff he deems to be truly worthy. I'm still proud, and I might have had a better turnout if I had given people more notice. by the way, just so people know, I sort of follow a hybrid strategy. I buy herb seeds and sell the potions, I buy allotment seeds and use or sell the veggies, and I use my kingdom to get fruit and tree seeds. oh and I pick all bushes, calquats and cactus spines. I end up selling fruit seeds below curry and buying more curry seeds, and usually grow all trees. I'm basically trying to do this on the cheap, using all profits to buy more seeds. I manage to eke a small profit along the way, enough to keep a store of about 3m cash and various other stuff I use when I'm not farming. I'm not hardcore about it, I do 1 run a day and hit all allotments, trees and fruit, plus troll herb spot, the calquat, cactus and I pick all bushes. takes me about 1.5 hours if I can do it uninterrupted and not cc too much. if I could afford to buy expensive seeds it would be a lot faster (all mages, palms and the calquat each day would be about 130k xp per day) so I guess, at my pace and with my level of dedication, I sorta see every level between here and the cape as pretty significant. if anyone needs advice, here it is: ~ do Fairy Tale 1 as soon as possible, it got me from lvl 1 to lvl 18 without me lifting a spade. its nice to have access to some of the higher lvl crops early. growing potatoes gets old fast. ~ give it some time. early, a lot of things will die, it's easy to get discouraged. heck, at lvl 90, I still have tomato plots die on me, even with supercompost. ~ try to plant things that will help you with farmer payments for the stuff you'll get access to later. I hold into cactus spines, coconuts, oranges, apples, papayas, pineapples, curry leaves, etc. if you want, you can buy baskets and fill them with bananas purchased from charter crewmembers. this works well in catherby. ~ if you dont have fruit or bush seeds, don't chop down your plants, keep harvesting them. you still get xp and the crops, a lot of which are worth money (whiteberries, cactus spines, coconuts and other high-lvl fruit). ~ always use some sort of compost if you can't afford to pay farmers. crops dying is a huge waste. compost is better than nothing, supercompost is good, payments are the best. allotments are less important when it comes to this, but you cant afford to have trees or fruit die, since they're such huge chunks of xp. I pay for all trees and fruit, and watermelons. you cant pay for flowers or herbs, but herbs in "my arm's" spot won't die. keep tree roots, calquats, etc. for supercomposting, and you can gather pineapples very quickly from 5 spawns on karamja near the brimhaven dungeon entrance and poh portal. I alternate days, placing stuff in all the bins 1 day, then gathering them the next. I end up making more supercompost than I use, and so when I fill up my leprechaun (255 buckets) I spend a few days without bothering about making more. ~ try to get a good rhythm with your farm route. there are several teleports that are close to certain patches (most major cities, cabbage teleport, elven crystal, ectophial and especially gnome tree transports) and you can usually run to a few other patches from these, or more importantly to a bank. ~ for those who are curious, my route is something like this: teleportation plant bank trollheim tele, run to my arm's spot, elven crystal to lletya, fruit tree, bank, cammy tele to catherby allotment and fruit tree, bank, ardy tele to north ardy allotment, run to wild jade vine, bank, karamja ferry to brimmy fruit tree, gather pineapples, plant/gather calquats, ferry back to ardy, bank, run south to bush spot, run west of gnome maze to fruit tree, enter gnome village, tree tele to gnome stronghold, fruit tree, bank, tree, bank, up grand tree to glider, cactus in al kharid, home tele, run to lumby tree spot, run north to champs guild bush, run north to varrock tree, (83s can now use tree tele in the g.e.to get to etceteria and the bush plot, then back to the g.e.), bank, cabbage tele to south fally allotment, run to rimmington bush, cabbage tele, run north to fally, bank, fally park tree, run to taverly tree, ectophial to phasmatys allotment and harmony island allotment. obviously, if you want to do more (hops, other specialty patches) or less, adjust as you see fit. ~ if you're in it for money more than pride, there is no better cash machine than farming's relationship with herblore. obviously, herbs are well worth the price of seeds, but there are also whiteberries, jangerberries, poison ivy berries, cactus spines and limpwurt roots, all of which (save the roots) are frequently re-pickable. ~ every 5 minutes the farm clock "ticks" and all plants advance a little bit. some plants take days to grow, some take under an hour. all plants that are re-pickable will grow an extra crop each tick, so if you harvest a fruit tree fully, it should be regrown with all 6 fruits after about 30 minutes. this is true of bushes (4 berries) calquats (6 calquats) and cacti (3 spines) and even willow tree branches in willow trees, though your tree will not start producing branches until after you "examine" the tree and gain the xp for growing it. ok, I went on quite a bit. uh, in the end, thanks everyone?

  20. nice one, 8/10. nice luck too, I had a similar story. I got one about 2 weeks after they came out, and it took me about 140 kills. sold for 25m. I've probably killed 2000 since. dragon drops here and there but no more visages... kinda mad cuz I really want a dfs. my advice is to get the shield, unless you already have one.
  21. the chaos runes and the black axe are (obviously) the clue reward. this was one of those where I don't care what lvl the clue was (and I don't know, but I can only assume lvl 1), I was better off doing something else with my time.
