We don't know that. It could be two common genes that when they are crossed you get a homosexual person. If anyone had the choice to be homosexual or heterosexual I don't think they'd be homosexual for the simple fact that it wold basically isolate them from a majority of the population. The only way to really know if homosexuality is inherited would be to trace it through many generations, and the science hasn't been advanced enough to do that for that long.

What if the "scopes" it talks about here arn't telescopes but the mirrors you look through in the desert treasure quest. Another theory: What if by scopes it is a reference to the real life trial of John Scopes about teaching evolution in school. If this is the case maybe it's saying a mahjarrat will evolve, maybe to godhood. What if the sacrifice isn't the weak one, but the strong one? Mahjarrat sacrifice the strongest mahjarrat so they can go join the gods, in turn that mahjarrat helps the mahjarrat still alive. That could explain while lucien was trying to get the stone of jas and the staff of armadyl. I'm guessing maybe they'd have to fight the gods so only the strongest gets to go. Yeah I know, in my theory I completely flipped around everyone's thoughts.
