well, death threats on mods, constant flaming, posting threads with titles such as "rate this or go to hell", that sort of thing. It is also at least believed by some, and evidenced by his reply in this very thread, that he was the infamous "bob marley" who hacked the boards at least once and posted rather um....er...innapropriate (to say the least) comments about raenond in quite conspicuos letters on the main page. He was in my clan around that time and was boasting about plans, was especially angry with raenond, and talking about how he had learned php just for the occassion. Since they were on dk3 which didn't update often and had exploits unpatched, it was relatively simple for someone like him to do. (Which, since we are giving a history lesson, was also one of the primary reasons for the domain switch. ) What is rather fascinating at this point is that Keiphus is blocked, but Alex, one of the assumed targets, is clearly not. So it must be that the proxy blocking is not total. Of course some less dedicated ones would be blocked, so I am sure it is somewhat justified. But clearly alex has his ways around this particlar safeguard. If we however made a seperate site for such contests alex would have no reason to come here, and would also have a point of contact with the artists here, which is clearly why he returns. He wants everyone to exclaim over him as in the old days. An understandable reason as we are all attention hounds, , but clearly not permissible. So this would allow an outlet.

Well grin, I will cut you some slack on this one. You actually gave a reason, and I appreciate that. I would have preferred it if we had been told when the decision was made. When wyrm locked the post he said that a decision was pending. But we never heard back on what the decision was. The same with the art user group we had discussed...in fact we still have no response on that. I do realize however that everyone is volunteering their time and are busy. Perhaps some "admin emmesary" could be appointed to relay admin decisions? As to making sure people like alex stay away...that could be difficult. Let me ask this. if we administrated the details of this contest on a third party site, giving them no reason to come here, would that be permissable? We are more than willing to be flexible.

Even back in the scape days he was quickly gaining on the top ranks. Although that 10k top total was a ways out :) If you comined his two counts though he would be around....6? 7k? Fire, as to the 50 post count....let me work on that...I think we could find someone with a forum to let us use. Or we can just start an invision one expressly for the competition and then kill it when we are done. THey fortunately seem to have a provision for killing boards so wouldn't mind if we did a short term one.

dabu used to have his...for a while there was another one too based on rs...forget the name now. Huang had one but it never really got going. . But none of those sites kept their momentum.We could try it though. Yes, the history of the media board is largely a history of trends....of course they continue on, but with smaller followings. first era: old fogies, ask them, I have no clue...a bunch of crotchety guys knew how to cut out an rs char and got paid to do it. Check with Keiphus, GSW and some old guys who no longer show up since they now, in comparision with the new generation are pretty lame.... second era: filter fun third era: abstract fourth era: cut out sigs (dromar, etc.) fifth era: weapon modeling sixth era: bryce abstract, followed by bryce actual renders of objects (wyrm used to do this particularly). seventh era: landscapes in bryce and terragen eighth era: vector...note...this era actually lasted about 5 minutes due to lack of programs :) ninth era: eclectic era built by disenchanted sig makers...saw the rise of smg and dag tenth era: pixels...lots of em. eleventh era: yet to be seen.

keiphus, were you caught in an ip ban? WHy can't you access from home? And, if you are not banned, see if the admins would allow you to simply use a proxy. I don't think they would mind?

Yes there is a lot to do in it, and I suppose the same could be said for poser/daz. But it is still not the same as hands on work.

Thanks :) I can answer the mod part. I flame and argue on other tip boards and ticked some off with my opinions I believe. At one time Raenond mentioned they were considering me for a mod ,but that was a long time ago. They put GSW in around that time, then they didn't need anyone. And a bit after that I started stepping on toes. Ah well. Now that I quit rs I just hang out here and try to be constructive again. But I wouldn't hold my breath on the mod part :) Still, I enjoy helping folks around here. So many of these people are young and growing fast in talent. I got started in art late in life. Some of these 13 year olds are going to be fabulous one day! That is why I am challenging them to take on some real art. The sooner they quit the non-representational stuff and start really working on art, the better off they will be. By the way, my goal is in fact to be able to do high quality work in 9 years (don't ask why 9. I have been planning it for a while thoug). Then I intend to donate some religious works to folks who use them for powerpoint presentations (we all have goals :) ) oh, and the wifey just ordered a tablet...so watch out!

Did this in it: Took the free basic model then painted it :) I don't seem to have good hardware open gl support so I got a cruddy software render (the wifey has the good video card). But the final came out pretty well. Took about 30 minutes playing around in the program to figure things out, then about 4 hours to paint. I just put the suit on to post it, I plan to make it into figleaves for an adam and eve in the garden of eden scene later. The program is fun, a bit like terragen though...all sliders and premade stuff. But like terragen it is what you do with it afterward that is important.

There is a free program being heavily advertised on Deviant art that allows you to use their propriety models, import poser and bryce models, and create 3d scenes. I have never used bryce or poser, would be interesting to see how this compares. The overall business model is that they provide the program for for free, along with a basic content package, then sell you other models online to actually make their money. Not a bad idea...we will just have to see if it works. Of course...with some free poser models out there...might be a challenge. Fortunately for trhem most free poser models are considerably lower quality than the pay ones. I managed to load and pose their free low res female model. It worked just fine..a bit tedious, but you can get the pose you are looking for. I wouldn't say everyone agrees with me. But you obviously just did on the number of times you were banned. And you pretty much concede that you started the post. Also, your post on rsc is ample proof that you were out to show how good rsc was compared to us...it is stated quite clearly. So you can't really blame people for agreeing with what is true. and as to us being better, I would say that swifty on your own boards agreed there after seeing our work :) But in the end, no one will really care whether tip or rsc was better...we are all art noobs anyway, and it is just for fun.

I just came across a great freebie program. You might own Adobe acrobat, but I am too cheap, and I tend to obey copyright laws. But recently I came across a free license program that allows you to print files to a driver that turns it into a pdf. It works great! I had been using corel draw to publish to pdf, but this is much more flexible I even got it to work with some complex publisher files, websites, etc. Anything you can print, you can put to a pdf in a couple seconds. I did have to tweak it a bit for publisher. It doesn't handle embedded text well, but that was easily worked around. Here is the link for the site. turley, that is a great painting. Can you show us some progress shots? Also...do you still have the layered version? Because I think it would be 100 times better if you changed those boots...they are killing the delicate feel.

Alex is the guy who started this post. A simple comparison of the two boards bears that out rather clearly. He makes tons of accounts here, probably using proxies to avoid the ip bans, and has probably been banned more than any other person in the history of scape/tip. He was banned twice during the lil-flip contest alone! lol. He was baiting us into the discussion, so in fact, this post was designed for that. But since I think we have plenty to show in favor of our board, we have nothing to lose by debating. This new name is a bit obvious huh Alex? That must get really old filling out the registration everytime...
